  1. I used to collect US coins like a vast majority of us do or did growing up in with grandfather , uncle and father who all were into coin collecting back in those days …

I sold my grandfather’s collection off mostly of Raw circulated coins lower end stuff seated dimes, Morgan, peace dollars , standing Liberty quarters , barber dimes and quarters and so on typical US coinage stuff  (later in the  years I regretted selling it even tho it wasn’t worth much, that wasn’t the point … but still I looked at it as a man who took time to spend his hard earn cash to build something he enjoyed building in this case was “his coin collection” it was priceless to him! So to this day I still feel guilty selling that ) … same could be said about my father’s raw collection also collected a lot Mint sets I sold all that all off .

I collected heavily on Buffalo nickels I had nice collection of Buffalo nickels wasn’t fully completed I dump that on market , I had nice collection of Lincoln cents dumped that back on market … I have soft spot for Mercury dimes and Walking Liberty halves are my two favorite U.S coins to collect

right now for last 8-10 years or so I been mostly focusing on German coinage since that where my heritage mostly came from Baden Germany I been working on Minor coinage RAW set of Kruezers , batzen, pfennigs and so on … I also working on Graded 2Mark , 3Mark , 5Mark all in PROOFS

my next journey into German coinage I want to branch out and collect Talers by Davenport # (we spell it Thalers) it really called Taler…  I’m also interested in collecting  German and European Exonumia (table medals) …

Oh also I collect German coin books ,catalogs and so on for my numismatic library you can NEVER have enough knowledge on coins always buy the book when you can ! Last year I didn’t buy a single coin , instead I invested into books for knowledge

  2. @Cozdred the glorious infamous 1913 V Liberty head nickel ! was Indeed “illegally” minted by Samuel Brown at Philadelphia Mint , I believe it been long while since I read an article about 1913 V nickel (why collectors got to keep the 5 known illegally struck 1913 V nickel? I don’t know ) I consider it a counterfeit coin anyways  … why all the high praise and high dollars spilled over a counterfeit coin anyways ???

That’s just as rare as owning 1933 St.Guadens double eagle which also illegal to own…

  3. @Cozdred I don’t know a whole lot about Half Sovereign coinage I haven’t really researched it much … but the way your describing this coin seems like they used reverse dies from The previous earlier years to strike this coin in 1891 ? From understanding Half Sovereign came in High and Low shield variety so No high Shield should have been produced in 1891 ? Correct ? …

If that’s the case ? thats rare find just like a 1959-D U.S “Mule” Lincoln cent !

it highly possible you own the “mule” of gold Half Sovereign! I have read into that more pretty interesting

Since neither of the major TPGs will guarantee correct listings of varieties, I really don't see why they care. On my home comp, I have a large file full of incorrectly assigned varieties, almost all by PCGS, so I can understand their reluctance to stand behind their work in this area.  But since they have nothing to lose, other than reputation, I don't see why they won't consider certifying new varieties that are plainly evident.  But these seem to be the rules of the game, and we have to play by the rules.

@Cozdred well said ! I agree a lot on what you said about PCGS … from what I see when it comes to world coins PCGS does not have expertise and Data like NGC would … NGC is leader in World coins in my opinion…

Not to get to far off topic I collect German coins in both PCGS and NGC , I’ve notice that “Buying hype” in PCGS world holder coins folks still believe PCGS is leader worth more money and so on when it comes to buying higher graded world coins why ? I have no idea ! Just like PCGS dominated TPG coins claiming they are worth more than NGC coin of same domination and grade and so on … I see it as a bunch of hooey baloney ! I buy the coin not holder I see nice coins in both holders so it doesn’t matter to me

until the next book comes out anytime soon on the varieties you found NGC probably would be your best bet to get them to authenticate your coins you have I wish you luck

  5. @VKurtB I look forward to you come back on here with a wealth of knowledge you’ll gain after this course …

Please ask what determines “SP” remark along with a grade on medals ? I’d like know how they come up with that assigned remark when grading and authenticating world medals (exonumia) if you’ll be looking at medals during this course

So your "requirement" that there be records saying a certain number of special "non-circulation strike"

I’m not trying to pick a fight with you or disagree with you but from one coin collecting brother to another Rodger might of came off a little harsh in his statement I don’t fully agree with everything he saying either …. We have to remember when we send a coin in for TPG to be graded by grader we also have keep in mind they need to be authenticate and how do they do that ? They need some type of information to be documented on it wether it is in book or Krause publication or some other catalog book that is what determines a coin to be authentic without it they won’t be able to really complete the grading process although there are tons of specimen that are put in the book by Mintage value However they are recorded somewhere in order to be authentic

@Cozdred don’t take Rodger’s “gibberish” to personal on here, we are all used to it on here by now… that’s Rodger ! There’s an old saying around these forums “I hope you got thick skin” sometimes on here the water gets really murky !

Both you and Roger are to be congratulated and honored for your research and writing contributions

@VKurtB I’m far from Rodger , don’t include me in with him that guy is walking encyclopedia on US minting processes and so … I’m just a Humble collector that reads as much as I can. In the end of the day everyone is entitled to their opinions on here but facts are fact sometimes I get it , and I don’t argue with folks on here but I do disagree with Rodger when he said SP or other such term have no meanings … They do and there’s a time and place when a coin should be assigned that along with Number grade TPG need be more clear on why and when they use that term

No one EVER wrote about the special 1994 nickels in the Jefferson C&C Set until I did

But you did ! So there’s some proof of their existence… I didn’t write it off to offend you in way but proof can be anything open up coin book you see that mint acknowledge public they struck a specimens that year or trial strike is kept in books … another issue is Medals (table medals is what I call them) European medals I notice the SP then a grade on the Slab some medals don’t get the SP assigned to it how they determine that I have no idea .

on another note @VKurtB I don’t collect Jefferson nickels I heard some years the mint was working on special matte finish proofs if that what you were talking about ?  but I always have time to read writing on coins do you have the quick link so I can read up on what you wrote about 1994 Jefferson nickels ? I’ll be more than glad to read it bud

  9. On another note I’ve heard some wacky stories of post office workers stealing packages and mail which highly condemn federal offense if caught …. I heard one story post office delivery person scanning packages near a home “delivered” then throwing the package back in USPS truck drive off on the route find houses that were empty or up for sale (nobody living in house) hide package on the porch later when their shift was over they’d drive by empty house and basically steal this package … they got caught by getting too greedy did it too many time … There’s some shady people out there not everyone is down to earth

I don't think any mail or shipping companies requires a signature any more

They should . I believe Priority mail still has option signature is required also has option no signature if required we are going on Day 7 now still no coin in mailbox … Problem in today is a lot people are ignorant they’ll open someone else package on purpose or by mistake see what’s in there and keep for themselves or flip it off somewhere for quick cash … Not everyone is down to earth honest like we are on here , I’ve gotten my neighbor’s mail by mistake in the past I walk over their house and hand it to them like an honest human person should do so …

I feel this coin was dropped off in someone else’s mail box could of been crack house at end of neighborhood I wouldn’t know if that was the case I don’t see that coin ever being returned

    Special Presentation (SP)

No SP stands for specimen SP is not really a grade in my opinion but more of way describing a coin should be treated like a Proof coin … I see SP given on a lot of older world coins and medals how they determine that ? I have no idea sometimes I look at a SP coin I see no real difference compared to regular business strike … perhaps a SP coin is struck more better or so the proof finish looks differently compared to later proofs … but the coin you show above in the post will probably maybe get a PL along with a grade number I can’t see the coin in my hand … But I have heard some old mints around the world when they struck a quota of proofs they had some left over instead of destroying them they held on to them for later years of they needed to meet that quota on a business strike they used up proof planchet to make the quota and these proof coins were sent into circulation… This might be why you are seeing this coin in that proof looking condition

the joys of collecting world coins I find myself often wondering digging around for information why a coin looks like a Proof when there nothing in the books saying they produced any proofs in that year or mint branch where the coin was struck … I share your frustration

  12.  update on yesterday I contacted USPS directly to open an investigation they will look into my local post office they told there is way they can pull up GPS within a few feet of my mailbox to make sure if it was delivered to my mailbox correctly (why my local post office did not mention this or look into this?? When I talked to them on Monday I have no clue)  or unless it was placed someone else’s mailbox the GPS will show it…

I probably can file a police report as well if this coin is taken to any pawn/coin shop in my area since it been graded and has cert# if it turns up at and coin shops (even that’s a long shot might never find it anyways) ..

My close neighbors all know me well they don’t have that package by mistake if they did they would of returned it in my mailbox …Valuable items like that should always be sent requiring signature and proof of ID … if I were to send a coin to a member on here I guarantee you I would be sending priority mail that requires a signature from you … it’s just common sense extra security

  13. @VKurtB you’re on point nothing beats Face to Face buying is the most safe way to obtain a coin one benefits of that is you get the coin that day right there on the spot no waiting or other mumble jumble …. Coin shows are nice but they don’t always have what I’m looking for, the glorious internet is like going to massive coin show everyday with thousands of private dealers who have websites plus auction houses. Overseas coin dealers and auction houses have some rare coins we can’t find here in US we are forced to buy through online and have it shipped … problem I see well even with auction houses why do they not offer higher shipping rates for and let the buyer determine what shipping they want ? Maybe I want priority with a signature and proof of Photo ID or drivers license that should be my choice after all I won/bought that Coin I’d rather have extra security on it while it’s being shipped …. Don’t laugh it’s not really laughing matter they send coins $2,000 up $10,000 in first class shipping with just tracking number to someone’s mailbox … the insurance is a joke that’s only “if it truly” gets lost but if it shows post officer worker “delivered it” all good nothing you can do about it … large auction houses and coin dealers need better way to ship more safely use the signature required shipping method simple as that

  14. @Coinbuf @ldhair first one for me as well … I’ve had tons of coins come through my mailbox no problem even ordered coins from overseas they shipped smoothly … I get the post office workers costly makes mistakes sometimes we are all human … but problem is they stand behind their technology act like it’s perfect “it delivered” sorry nothing we can do to help you …. It kinda bugs you when you hear that , real shame too not much solid ground for a buyer to stand when get stuck in this situation…. Heritage really can’t do anything about it they did their part sending it off the post office can care a less it shows it was delivered

  15. @Redline68 that exactly what this Post office did to me yesterday I had time between my 2 jobs I stop over for a few minutes… talked to the lady behind counter she went in back seemed like only for a minute didn’t even really look for my package … she said it shows it was delivered , I told her I believed it was delivered to wrong mailbox ! Somewhere else … she went on like oh don’t worry we will find it , someone will turn it in “hopefully” then she asked “what was is it? What was in the box?” I’m like what business is that of yours ? (In back of my head I didn’t speak it out loudly) but I wouldn’t tell her … It seemed odd she would be asking me what was in the box …

hey it’s the risk we take when buying coins from auctions and online and so on … But I highly recommend auction houses should only send expensive collectibles and valuable items such as coins that Require a signature and photo ID to rightful owner ! For few more dollars I’d gladly pay for that extra security for my item

it’s a decent nice toned coin that would of looked great in my Proof 3 mark set I’m putting together ,although I wanted PR66 DCAM which rarely shows up on auctions I settled for PR65 very decent coin for the grade …hopefully it shows up in my mailbox like I said I’m glad this was not like $5,000 coin or something higher caliber I would be really flipping out about it if it got lost in the mail

  16. Yep a badly stained coin environmental damage is what the grading company would probably call it … however there is a story about 1959-D Lincoln cent “mule” is what we call it… This is a rare occasion only 1 exist that should never have existed anyways … But however I don’t consider is genuine in my terms it was counterfeit by mint worker deliberately  or by someone else no documentations on it anywhere in the mint ? I heard wacky stories about it once but not sure if I believe it or not

but a slim slim well Loooong shot chance you even have anything close to that it’s more rarer than 1943 copper cent or 1974-D specimen aluminum cent

  17. I’ve won a nice 1911-D German state 90th birthday Luepold 3 Mark Proof 65 on heritage auctions 4/6/23 old German state proofs don’t pop that much on market so I took a shot and I won the live bidding been awhile since I did any bidding on heritage auctions …

On 4/12/23 got an email from heritage with tracking number priority mail no problem , then on 4/15/23 it says it been delivered to my mailbox I been busy working 2 jobs I’m not home much as I used to be but my wife is home all time she knows I’m always buying coins she checked the mail nothing … Okay no problem 4/17/23 still no package or anything I asked neighbors see if they gotten it by mistake they all know me and my wife good nothing ! I figured Heritage auctions would send out coins that require signature ? I guess priority mail changed over the years it used to require signature all time … I’m just thankful this wasn’t like a $5,000+ coin ! I woulda been really pissed but it does seem like it’s more on USPS fault but they won’t admit it’s fault they say “it’s delivered” then it was delivered leaving the buyer (me) standing there like I’m a liar (I believe they scanned it as “delivered” but it still sitting in post office)

I’ve had no problems with coins arriving in the mail I’ve bought $3,000 coins arrived in mail in first class cheesy bubble wrap envelope this the first time I’ve Had coin that has not arrived in the mail …

Oh and the joys of USPS ! They are difficult people to work with… hopefully they find my package !

As a novice collector, the last thing that you should be thinking about is submitting coins to grading services.

I don’t know why newer collectors think they must get a coin graded … I mean there’s millions and millions of coins already out there that are already in holders and graded why waste the expenses shipping common coins to grading company when you can buy one already graded that been authenticated is a better investment for newer collectors.
