@Taler Tales I collect German state coinage as well thalers are interesting large Coins with beautiful designs on them it’s all about silver contents in the coins some German state areas were wealthier than others at the time they were able to make larger types of thalers. Here’s an interesting article about thalers

I’m just curious about the grading process and what gives a coin like this a grade of MS-65? Does a die crack void these of that kind of grade even though it’s common in these? Sorry once again if this is a dumb question but how are us dummies supposed to learn without asking them lmao.
Usually the Steelies are graded based on strike sharpness and luster , higher luster brings better grade … this steel cent shown above in pictures is typical mint state average what we mostly see , keep in mind steel cent is a very common coin to see they didn’t circulate very much as they were only made for 1 year a lot of them were hoarded back can be found very easily .

Maybe give out business cards private appointments to customers , set out a small sign saying you’re only buying certain coins for certain series get expertise in certain series might narrow it down. Buying silver from sellers must be annoying while you’re trying to establish a coin collector’s business , everyone wants to dump their silver or junk bullion at a coin show instead of focusing what coin collecting is really about . You might do better online selling directly to other collectors

I agree as well looks like it was harshly polished die before striking the coin all lines flowing in same direction under wings and lettering . Whizzing would of been all over the eagle and wings somewhat polishing the details down as well . I don’t see this on this coin definitely looks like harshly polished die or they used a very stiff wire brush to clean the dies up before striking the coin it left the marks on it perfectly in fields and not right over the eagle

AU you can clearly see eagle breast feathers are worn , I also see a rim nick as well

If I were to spend that money on that type of coin I would only buy it slabbed by NGC or PCGS . What about raw ? I’d only spend that money on raw coin in that caliber only if I can examine the coin in person to make a better judgement of the coin I wouldn’t buy it raw off Ebay or some other online selling platform. But I do see it all time people buying/bidding on expensive coins on eBay or other places like Etsy I guess some people do have deep pockets to spend money away silly not even think twice about what they are about to pay for

Not to get off topic but last week I was at food store for longtime since I’ve seen someone use a checkbook to pay for food not to odd or rare to me I still use checks to pay my bills and mail them out with a stamp! … Few people up in front of me were in their 20’s shaking their heads rolling their eyes at an elderly lady for writing a check out for her food … I just wanted to tap the younger people’s shoulders and say “you know she probably has a better managed bank account with money in it than you’ll ever have!” … I’ve seen these youngsters come up with their Apple watches , IPhones beep beep beep to pay for stuff never ask for a receipt . I’ve been behind few using their credit cards and iPhones to find out they had Non-Sufficient fund ! Talk about an embarrassment in a store

We’re moving into a new ‘era’ time to raise the grading scale to MS/PF 100 get ready to learn how to grade/collect cryptocurrency. 🤔

Doesn’t look like 3-1/2 legged to me either . Although color looks off looks almost like environmental damage or if it was dipped in an acid long ago not washed off properly ?

Maybe I did not look out on the right place for information, the coin is worn yes, it's been in a jar for years, and Im practically new on this, I apologize for not doing homework and I appreciate your comment. Will try next time. Than you sr.
Sorry if I sounded mean . Wasn’t trying to be , lately on here there been numerous of questions about same thing you just asked about “U” and “V” on peace dollars and standing liberty quarter …. Some new people come on here ask us for advice they literally turn into a aggressive poster that won’t accept anyone’s advice on here literally wasted some of members time on here even replying to their post …if you stick around and read some of these newbie post from time to time you’ll see what I’m talking about … some members literally stopped helping some of the newer members with questions because of that reason alone…
today with power of internet there’s countless articles written on peace dollars you don’t even have to go to a library anymore , lots and lots of information out there VS what we had back in the old days going to libraries and reading up on information …
your coin is cool it came from your mom I’d would keep it , welcome to the forums hope you pick up the coin collecting hobby like rest of us have.

Alright I’ll do your homework for you a simple google would of bought it up … some believe it’s Latin , there is no “U” in Latin , during that period of time when peace dollars and standing liberty quarters were minted it’s was Deco period they used “V” instead of “U” … some also believe the “V” was used for Victory after WW1 .
-
The “V” is normal in peace dollars and as well as on standing Liberty quarters … grade ? is Melt value its pretty beat up

But.....but...LQQK closely.....the obverse is a very rare rotated die....must be worth thousands !!!!!!!!!!!******!!!!!
I don’t want to look at it too closely , might start seeing fuzzy doubling will add more unnecessary value to this special specimen
-
Probably only worth melt value , the fancy fake knock off authentication doesn’t contribute any value for it either

Thanks Jason. I wasn't particularly interested in whether my Aussie and Canadian coins were valuable. I've been doing this on/off (mostly off) since 2010. I showed the AU and CA coins to a dealer in a shop in Seattle and he said I should ask around as he knew nothing about circulated coins from those countries. I'm keeping the coins, no plans to sell, I just like having them. In the past I've bought a couple of books on numismatics and still refer to them but they're exclusively for US coins and both are over a dozen years old.
Thanks Again.
If you want a book about world coins look into Krause world coin book … those books are size of an old phone book. Some dealers only deal in US coinage only they don’t know much about world coins. World coins are definitely cool some are worth something and some ain’t worth anything . I myself changed over and left my US coin collection behind about 10-12 years ago I mostly focus and collect on old/modern German coinage

You can do this everyday asking if something is collectible , everything is collectible if one put their heart and mind to it …. Now worthiness? That only learned by doing research if you ask on here a lot and not do your homework eventually folks are going to get tired answering it over and over on here . Seems like a lot new people on here are only worried about if something is worth $$$$ instead of really learning the history of numismatic and why we collect numismatic , YouTube ! And others lame videos have ruined this hobby over last several years . Every new person thinks they have double die or some rare “needle in hay sack” coin when it’s not …
But if you stick around on here and wanna take collecting a little serious and buy coins that are worth money you’ll learn a lot on here from some of us who been doing it for many years

Can probably soak the heavy dirty ones in acetone Verdigris can be removed with acetone soaking . Just Hope for the best that’s all you can do. Sadly a lot coin collections were ruined like this everyday from bad storage methods for many years
-
Only thing that may remove that is soaking in acetone , or dipping it … I would return it to the seller it’s his problem
What’s up with Talers

@Taler TalesI came back because I forgotten to mention when it comes to Thaler coinage they were like a very large silver dollar at that time mostly probably circulated among the richer people back then since the poorer were not able to obtain a Thaler . I’m sure you might know the difference between a “duchy” was state that formed a allegiance with larger kingdom together . As “Grand duchy” was a state that was ruled and more independent on its own . They all had different thalers at that time with different denomination based on their wealth within their respective states at that time before they all became a larger kingdom which enter the “German empire era” only one Grand dutchy remains today that is Luxembourg
