  1. I will certainly not do so, Alex. I have a job interview on Tuesday for a telecommuting position that's being conducted using Microsoft Teams. Last thing I want to do is annihilate my computer. I would be very sad if that happened, especially right now.
  2. That would certainly be one way of attempting to evade property taxes, that's for sure. There was an episode of Bob's Burgers in which some of the characters attempted to turn a public aquarium into a religious temple to try to evade property taxes so the aquarium could stay open. It was a pretty good episode. I found it to be quite humorous.
  3. I've gotten it a couple times, too GBrad. I think the Boards are having some kind of an issue. My guess is it's a problem on NGC's end rather than some kind of security risk.
  4. Yep. Definitely. That's a Details piece at NGC for sure.
  5. I guess for me personally, I don't feel the draw due to American history.....American history has never been an interest of mine. aside from the local history of New York State. I'm much more into ancient history, as you might imagine from me. But the Morgan is aesthetically pleasing and it is easily one of the best U.S. coin designs. So, I suppose I feel an aesthetic draw. And my fiancée collects them, so I have a soft spot for them for that reason.
  6. Hmmm....that's a good question. The first thing my mind goes to is a sestertius, which would be 32-34mm in diameter. That said though....I don't know what your price range on this project is and sestertii can be a little expensive. Asses and dupondii are also good sized copper coins. They range from 27mm to 29mm and often cost less than a sestertius. Another option would Constantinian bronzes. They can often be purchased fairly inexpensively and the AE1's are over 25mm and the AE2's range from 21-25 mm. You said something large enough to see, so my favorite, the denarius, is likely out of the running. They're about the size of a cent or a dime, but they are silver, quite affordable and often extremely beautiful. As for myself, I'm not a fan of the Constantinian bronzes as I like the more classical era of Roman history. Another thing you have to consider is the ruler on the coin...that can make a huge difference in price. I know that this is Wikipedia, but there's a good picture on the page that shows examples of the different denominations you will run across: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_currency
  7. I'm that same way about my Roman coins.....it's absolutely fascinating to think about who may have held them, who may have used them, who buried them and why.....that's part of the magic of collecting circulated coins. They all have stories and we know this much but they can never tell them. It's fun to theorize and speculate on what those untold stories may be.
  8. Congrats, JP!!! That's a nice circulation find for sure!
  9. I'm with Jonathan....it does look like a replated piece. I've seen a ton of those in my time, and they look just like that. VF Details-Replated is dead on in my mind.
  10. Indeed they are, Cbanton, indeed they are. You just can't stop some people from walking off a cliff, no matter what you do. They have to plummet for themselves.
  11. Yes indeed. And it doesn't have a stupid looking privy mark on the reverse, either.
  12. GBrad nailed it.....your coin is simply damaged.
  13. I have to add something here......it looks like the coin is on OfferUp. That is one of the worst places to buy coins in this known universe. Lots of fakes, damaged coins being sold as errors and varieties are on there. I would strongly urge you to never buy a coin on OfferUp ever again. Also stay away from Alibaba and Etsy......all three of those places are cesspools when it comes to buying coins.
  14. GBrad hit this one out of the park....I can think of nothing to add.
  15. That's amazing!!!! I love it!! And I'm thrilled to death that Appalachiosaurus has become a minor celebrity on the NGC Boards!!
  16. Yes, Greg.....are you Appalachiosaurus' business partner? But, hey, if you are, I'm envious!! Even though it's been dead for 66 million years, it's having a much more exciting life than I am!!!! ~Tom
  17. That'd be perfect!! We can have the placeholder award until 2023 and then it's the Year of the Appalachiosaurus!!!
  18. Hello and Welcome! Coinbuf has it just right....it's just a minor filled die. Such things may look strange, but they're not rare and they add no value to a coin.
  19. We're also lacking the hundredth dollar and the twentieth dollar. Though we should probably retire both of those, honestly, regardless of what they're called. Here's hoping that statement isn't opening another Pandora's Box.......
  20. I hope so. And I hope that they advocate to get the former Zerbe award named for them. The ANA Appalachiosaurus Distinguished Service Award.......it has a nice ring to it, don't you think? And I don't think we have to worry too much about the Appalachiosaurus having some rather unpleasant skeletons coming out of its closet once its name is on the award, unless it is indeed the one selling some of our "friends" here the "coins" that they see fit to grace us with from time to time or engaged in sketchy business practices at its Georgian convenience store.
  21. I've always thought that resubmissions are a big part of the problem that's rendered the population reports essentially meaningless.......I'd imagine lots of sliders and plus and star grades have been sent in numerous times, hoping for them to "graduate" to that next level up.
  22. Appalachiosaurus is having a pretty exciting life for an animal that has been dead for 66 million years ......it got divorced from Ronnie and now it's running a shabby convenience store in Georgia! I'm waiting to hear that our local NGC Boards hero, SlickCoins, bought that damned fake 1793 Large Cent that he keeps prattling on about from an Appalachiosaurus now.
  23. My state's quarter (New York) needs some help also. I propose my new, old friend Appalachiosaurus there:
  24. I would be in complete favor of that, Roger! A nice Deinonychus with its majestic plumage would be a huge improvement over a dead bison's head which is somehow larger than mountains floating in the sky.
  25. Much like nature.......the fakers are evolving. Back when I first started collecting as an adult in 1999, no one would have even thought of a fake GSA holder, but here we are. Very disturbing stuff.
