  1. Hi Dejone, After looking at your photos, I do not see anything that looks unusual to me. It just looks like a regular 1971-D Kennedy Half Dollar to me.
  2. That's a really cool and informative photo, Bob. Thanks for finding that and sharing it. You can definitely see how "spitting eagles" come into being very easily.
  3. Agreed on all counts. We need photos to tell you anything beyond what has already been said. Written descriptions are useless when it comes to discerning anything meaningful about coins. Good, clear, head on photos are an absolute requirement.
  4. Mine too. Bald Eagles are some nasty, aggressive birds. Here's what happened when a Red Fox tried to keep a Bald Eagle from stealing its hard earned kill. The eagle, fox and deceased rabbit are all in the air:
  5. K-Marts are much, much rarer than 1947-S Cents these days.
  6. Agreed with Bob and Neo on all counts.....it's a fun circulation find, but not overly rare.
  7. I'm sorry about the hijack, too. But I have to say discussing our "favorite" ugly coins has turned into something pretty fun.
  8. Oh man, that second Churchill is TERRIBLE.....he looks like he rose from the dead and is showing us that he can still count to two in his undead, zombie brain. The Pobjoy Mint should really hang their heads in shame about that one.
  9. I have to disagree as well.....I like it, too Mike. I see nothing ugly about that one, especially when compared to Eunice, Mt. Rushmore and Laura Gardin Fraser's war crime against coinage art. I like Machin's and Ironside's work on this coin and others.
  10. Unpopular opinion time. I also find this one to be awful as well: The minute I saw this, I realized that Mellon had made the absolute right choice picking Flanagan's design, regardless of what the Commission of Fine Arts had to say on the issue. I am very depressed that the obverse of this horrible thing is rising from the dead again in 2022.
  11. Oh, that's up there too, Bill. That thing is DREADFUL. Truly another of the U.S. Mint's Greatest S*its.
  12. My fiancée is a total techy.....she loves anything technology, so she bought one of the Edison dollars for her collection and I said the Bowers thing to her once. Her reply "Now I can't NOT see Bowers!!! Thanks a lot!! It's always going to the the Dave Bowers dollar to me now!!!" And, to this day, she can't unsee Dave Bowers when she looks at that coin.
  13. I would say it's likely not, though I know very little about Eunice Kennedy Shriver and how she looked in real life, admittedly. U.S. history and U.S. historical figures are not my thing and never have been, if I'm to be completely honest. I wonder how she actually felt about this coin. The U.S. Mint does stuff like this, though.....the Thomas Edison Dollar has always looked more like Dave Bowers holding a microphone than Thomas Edison with a light bulb to me:
  14. Oh no......the U.S. Mint far outdid this in ugliness in 1995. Remember this hot mess? I don't think you can beat this in the ugly competition.
  15. Well said, Jonathan. That is an excellent explanation of the whole NNC situation.
  16. No problem, Deiter. I really wish I had better news to give you on the coin, but that's what I honestly think based on the photos. NNC slabs tend to have a lot of problem coins in them......as a general rule, I'd avoid them in the future.
  17. I have my suspicions about that toning myself. It could be natural, but I've seen a lot of Morgans that have been cleaned in the past develop toning that looks very much like the OPs coin as a result of the reaction with the cleaning agent. Admittedly, determining such a thing with certainty is nearly impossible without having the coin in hand, but I do have to say that toning does concern me. And the NNC slab does nothing to alleviate my concerns. I've seen a ton of cleaned coins in their slabs and that foam they use as a gasket can cause the exact kind of toning on a cleaned silver coin that the OPs coin exhibits. So, for me, my vote is the coin has been cleaned and would get a Details grade at NGC.
  18. Thanks for posting that, Alex!! It's a much better response that what I came up with
  19. Hi William!!! First off, it sounds like you have a great relationship with your in-laws, which is really cool. They even buy you birthday presents!! I do not have such a thing. My father-in-law is the greatest guy you'd ever want to meet but my mother-in-law is a Catholic extremist zealot who has Narcissistic Personality Disorder and that combination is absolutely no fun at all. Either one on its own would be horrible but the two together......*shudder*. I have no idea how a really super guy like my father-in-law ended up married to her. To be fair, Candice struggles with her mom, too. She's the kind of person almost anyone would struggle with. It's funny you should mention Pawn Stars!! My old boss's former business partner was actually on an episode of that show. And there's nothing wrong with entertainment that's "fake". I love zombie movies and t.v. shows and they're definitely fake. Entertainment doesn't have to be based in reality...it's often a little escape from the real world, which everyone needs sometimes. Kids can be funny......it's funny that Ben's proclaimed your favorite color to be gold!!! But you're right.....I'm wondering if he has gold and silver mixed up, based on what you've written. It's entirely possible. Congrats on your new pickup....it's something any Pawn Stars fan would love. ~Tom
  20. Hello and Welcome Deiter!! You can definitely post pics and see what the community thinks. Make sure that they're good, crisp, detailed head on shots of both the obverse and reverse so that we can get the best idea about your coin as we can.
  21. Hi Vero! From the pictures, it's just post minting damage. A die chip would be a raised area on a coin and what you have circled appears to be incused into the coin. I think it's a gouge.
  22. No problem, Mike!!! Let us know how the patient turns out.
