  1. Hi Bill, You're not going to like this but from those pics, I'm more at the XF-AU straddling line, sadly. Let's call it a 50. It looks like it's a bit more worn to me from those pics and it looks like there is very little luster remaining, if any, to explain my change of thoughts on it.
  2. GBrad's right Bill.....we all make mistakes in this hobby. About 10 years ago I bought a counterfeit, key date Ottoman Empire gold 100 Kurush. That one HURT!!!! That was easily the stupidest move I've ever made with coins. Be glad that you didn't do that one, trust me.
  3. You got it just right. And a little tip for the future.....all circulation strike 1979-S SBA's have the Type 1 mint mark. The Type 2 is only found on some of the proof strikes for 1979.
  4. I was going to go AU53 myself, Coinbuf. But it could get a 55 too, I suppose. But, yeah, Bill you did overpay for it, unfortunately. There's no way that coin is any kind of MS grade.
  5. I have to ask......did you ever place a cent on railroad tracks as a kid? I did, and some of those cents did appear to have multiple images after the train had run over them. I don't know the exact mechanism that made that happen, but it did happen. I wish I still had some of those cents to show you here, but this was well over 30 years ago and they're long gone.
  6. In looking at the photos, I concur with railroad damage. It just doesn't look like anything that could have happened during the minting process but it does look like a cent laid on a railroad track.
  7. Hello and Welcome Dimeslot!! With what you have and the sheer volume of it, I think this is the best course of action. Someone at NGC can definitely guide you with this and get you moving in the right direction. Sometimes, you gotta ask the pros!
  8. I'm seeing machine doubling and possibly some die deterioration doubling. Neither form of doubling is considered collectible.
  9. Yep. I'm seeing that, too. A split in the plating definitely means you have the common zinc version of the coin.
  10. That's a nice one, Hog!! Glad you could cross something you wanted for a long time off of your list. That's always a good feeling. I remember when I got my one and only Faustina Egyptian Tetradrachm....that was a big one for me. Thanks for sharing that!
  11. Both Victoria and George V have some gorgeous coins. I've always liked the Gothic Florin of Victoria myself.....that's a damned handsome coin, IMHO.
  12. At least you're not the guy who keeps making shark jokes in different threads, as I am, and at least your silliness is inspiring!!! But in all seriousness though, you really do seem to be inspiring some people to jump into the Journal pool William....and that's pretty cool to see.
  13. Hello and Welcome VE Coins!! You've found a very cool area to focus in on with your collecting. There are a lot of us here who work within a specific niche, myself included. And I can completely understand being inspired by Revenant.....he doesn't keep winning those Journal awards for nothing, that's for sure!!! His Journal is great. Another good one to check out is coinsandmedals.....his Journal is also fantastic. I look forward to seeing where your collecting journey takes you and I wish you much luck, success and enjoyment during your journey!
  14. Congrats on the new listings, Karen!!! That is awesome that you made some new discoveries. You may only have three new listings but that's three more than I have
  15. Nice pickups, Bill. I do like British coins quite a bit. I find them far more appealing than any American coins and they're a great area to get into....they have a lot to offer. Thanks for sharing those with us.
  16. Hey....we've all done things like that. It happens. I'm sorry to hear that, but hey, at least you still have some very nice coins which is a good thing.
  17. Oh don't think I don't get tempted. I recently found out that an Annia Faustina Egyptian Tetradrachm may be a somewhat affordable way to add her to my subset of Faustina's family members and descendants who appeared on coins within my collection.....which got me looking at Egyptian Tetradrachms of almost anyone you can imagine!!! I had to slap myself in the head and tell myself to keep my eyes on the damned prize
  18. Hey Andrew, You can send some pics to me with weights, too, and I can flail about with them and Wildwinds, Aorta and OCRE as I get a chance and see what I can do, in my own rank amateurish way with these, if you want. Just shoot them to me in an email, if you want. ~Tom
  19. I'd say that if you're going to keep this set for yourself and you're not a Registry collector, there's really no need to grade them. The original packaging should be just fine for the set. And, the money you save by not grading them can go toward another coin, which is a big plus in my book!
  20. Hi Vero, Well....it looks like the others have this one right on. I have nothing to add other than that I concur with the others. ~Tom
  21. Hi Karen!!! Well, you definitely have a 2000 Wide AM, which is a good find in and of itself!! However, on the reverse, my first thought on that is a plating blister....it has that look to me and, as you know, those are pretty common on Zincolns. ~Tom
  22. I hate to say it, but they'll likely ship whenever the U.S. Mint feels like it and not a moment before. That seems to be their M.O. these days.
