  1. Welp, I headed out years ago without a word. So, I won't do that again. However, things have happened here that have made me realize that this isn't the place for me any longer. There are too few things that I am interested in and want to talk about going on here and too many things that I'm not interested in and have no desire to talk about happening here. I think that there are certain intersections that occur in certain areas of this hobby that don't work well for me, and these intersections are clearly manifesting here. This isn't a place I feel good being in anymore. I'm not enjoying it. This is a hobby and its purpose is to be fun and to be a distraction from the mundane things and the bad things in life. When a part of your hobby stops being fun and starts bringing additional mundane things and bad things into your life, it's time to disconnect and leave. This Board has become that for me. So, I'm saying Auf Wiedersehen at least for a while, maybe for good. Not sure yet. We'll see how things go. Mohawk, signing off.......
  2. You are so welcome, Patman. Always glad to help.
  3. That's what I was seeing....but that 1952-E 10 Pfennig in MS 62 might be worth a crackout.....
  4. Hi Patman!! It's because Philadelphia did not strike any nickels in 1968, 1969 and 1970. Only Denver and San Francisco did, so those are what ended up in the mint sets. Philly nickels show back up in 1971.
  5. Do they have raw German coins there? I was looking and all I saw were graded items.
  6. I'm looking on eBay. That's the only place I've looked so far, but I'm going to check out MA-Shops as well. I'm thinking I may have more luck there, but since it's a German site, I'll probably be able to buy one but not necessarily cherry pick one. I think I'll get more serious about it once the auction for the 1950-E 10 Pfennig I'm bidding on has ended and I've either won it or lost it. The 1950-E 10 Pfennig is the real toughie in the early East German run.
  7. Very nice, TJ! That's a pretty cool cherry pick. I'm trying to cherry pick a 1952-A Small A East German 1 Pfennig in nice shape right now. All I've found are a couple of really ugly ones. Ah, well. If I keep looking, one should turn up.....it isn't that rare.
  8. Hi Gem! I'm with Greenstang and Roger....you definitely have machine doubling on your coin.
  9. So true. He does take good photos. He seems to hallucinate things while he does so, but he does take good photos.
  10. And that about sums it right up, my friend. I couldn't say it any better.
  11. Oh man, no kidding. I don't think he even knows what he described. He keeps this up, he may win both the Pareidolia Prize and the Incoherence Prize.......
  12. Hey, it happens JAnsley......I've replied without reading the whole thread before and gotten beaten to the punch.
  13. That's a really cool story, Hog, and a really neat connection you have to these tokens. That kind of connection definitely plays into things for me as well. My maternal family came from East Germany (in case I didn't tell you before......I can't remember who I've told and who I haven't), so that's a huge part of why my early East German project is so important to me. It's a way of connecting to that family and to my late mother. As I've gone through my life, I've also realized how much the culture of East Germany, through my family, has influenced and impacted me and made me who I am along with really impacting how I perceive and feel about many things. Personal connections are very powerful stuff and can cause a passion in people like few other things. I hope you can build a whole set of those tokens....it'd be a really cool achievement with huge family significance.
  14. Hi Joe! Well, I looked at some photos of different SBA dollars and while the star is very close to the wing on all of them, it doesn't quite touch the way it does on yours. I'm thinking it may be a small die break or a die chip that's causing what you're seeing. However, I am far from certain of my diagnosis and will gladly defer to those who know more than I on this subject. ~Tom
  15. One thing that could help with acquiring a little natural patina would be to try to find some paper coin envelopes, the older, the better. Those have helped me in the past when I've had a coin that needed a little appearance help. It takes a while, but those envelopes will often impart some nice, subtle and natural toning to coins stored in them.
  16. Now there's a good idea, TJ!!! ldhall.....I'm using TJ's gasket solution myself in the Whitman album I'm making for my early East German collection and it's working extremely well. I just need to wait for the rest of my AirTites to arrive along with my labels and I'll be posting up some pics for everyone. I don't see why it wouldn't work with a Capital Plastics holder as well. Do you have or could you easily acquire a quarter sized AirTite? That way, you can see what size the gasket in there is and see how it would match up with the holes in a half dollar Capital Holder. If the gasket is around the size of a half dollar, you'll be all set.
  17. Sounds like you're a U.S. coin guy, Heriberto. You'll find many here who collect all different areas of U.S. coinage, including Morgans and nickels. I'm not one of them (I'm a German, Canadian and Ancient coin guy, along with anything from anywhere with a good bird depiction), but there are many here who are. Do you have a particular nickel type that you enjoy collecting, or just nickels in general?
  18. Actually, Bill, there is a W mint Kennedy Half. In the 2014 50th Anniversary Silver Kennedy Half Set, the Reverse Proof is a W:
  19. Man, look at that toning!!! It's amazing!! If I could find a West German silver 5 Mark with toning like that, I'd be one happy guy!! Thanks for sharing that one, Robec.
  20. Hi Joe!! I looked at your photos and I've been giving your coin some thought and I actually think it's both. I think you have both machine doubling and die deterioration doubling on your coin. It definitely wouldn't be the first time I saw both on a U.S. coin from the late 1960's. They really overused the dies in that era.
  21. I'm with Coinbuf. While it is a nice coin, that rim damage is going to result in a Details grade for sure. I'd say that coin would be excellent for a nice album collection. Not every coin needs to be slabbed.
  22. Hello and Welcome Heriberto!!! Like the others, I'm excited to know what you collect. So, please, let us know
  23. It never ceases to amaze me how some educated people can still manage to be so ignorant, but they certainly can, sadly.
  24. There are some times in collecting where a nice, circulated coin can have more character than an MS piece of the same date and denomination. I'd say this 1948-A 10 Pfennig is one of those pieces. I really like the dark coloration and the weathered look it has. These are the seller's pics and it's coming from Latvia, so I'll be waiting for it for a while: :
