Popular Post Sandon
I purchased this chocolate brown, relatively well detailed 1813 "Classic Head" large cent (S292) uncertified at a local coin auction in February 2004 and submitted it to NGC for certification in June 2022. NGC graded it XF 40, which I think is fair. Many Classic Head cents were poorly struck on dark or porous planchets, making this one especially desirable. They're also hard to find in grades as high as Extremely Fine. Lem E, AcesKings, JT2 and 6 others

farthing
Ok, I'll play - farthing sized token catalogued as Middlesex Spence D&H 1095a, the obverse combining the head of a devil with that of the Prime Minister William Pitt, the reverse refers to the Seditious Meetings Act of 1795, commonly referred to as the Gagging Act. Provenance to Francis Cokayne which is about as good as it gets. Our host graciously graded it as 66RB. rrantique
leeg
Even after all my years of collecting I still make a few buying mistakes. I started a colorful 1957 (birth year) Proof Set and purchased this coin. Wasn't a good image and the coin has numerous flaws: Still living and learning. POP 3/1 in 66 BN Lem E and rrantique
Popular Post Sandon
1818 Matron Head cent, N10 die variety, presumably from the Randall Hoard. I purchased this large cent at a local coin auction in 1999. It is presently uncertified, but I intend to submit it to NGC in the near future. The photos made the coin look somewhat better than it really is. It is actually somewhat darker and has a large "keg mark" on Liberty's face, which is subdued in the photo. I estimate the grade as MS 62 BN. Lem E, Coinbuf and rrantique

There were two obverse and reverse dies that create 4 varieties for the 1793 date. The C-1 and C-2 share the same obverse, with a shallow slope to the underside of the bust shoulder. The C-3 and C-4 obverses have a more acute curvature to the underside of the bust. The C-3 and C-4 can be told apart by the proximity of the ribbon to the fraction in the reverse. The closer of the two is the C-3. Your coin is a C-3 (R.3). Thanks for sharing! Sandon
@The Neophyte Numismatist--Thank you. The Stacks Bowers catalog (June 2013 sale, lot 1002) identified the coin as a C-2, incorrectly as it turns out. The Neophyte Numismatist

It is amazing to think - we are two collectors that don't really know each other... but, we share a same date, same variety that came out of the same keg under a GA train platform! I love that kind of stuff. Another interesting fact is that this was the first large cent I ever saw when I first started collecting. I could not get the coin out of my mind until I had it. This is the one that got me hooked on copper! J P M, Lem E and Coinbuf
