Maybe, but Daniel Carr is pretty well known. He is known for striking his fantasy coins on legitimate coins of the same type as planchets. Therefore, he is not counterfeiting, as much as he is modifying legitimate coins (more like a hobo nickel). Also, he is not modifying his coins into existing key dates (i.e. taking a 1944-D 1C and turning is into a 1914-D). He makes coins that never existed. I am sure that the jury will still be out, but these factors will help the defendant. CoinJockey73

On top of that the design is not his work. He is using someone else's work. I'm not a fan of you! If the Secret Service doesn't consider it counterfeit, it's not. Any questions? Edited July 4, 2022 by tj96

Brace for impact! 🐓 ... and so it came to pass. I am going to have to yield to Coinbuf on this one. (By extension, that will also necessarily require I reject the WW I poster depicting a "1915" 20-franc gold rooster 🐓, or is that just artistic license? FlyingAl
I look at Carr's work through a different lens: I'm a unexperienced 16 year old working at the cash register in a busy supermarket. You hand me a piece of Carr's work as payment. If I accept it - the line has been crossed. If not - carry on.
Quintus Arrius
As distinguished member @RWB memorably pointed out to me, the statue on the dome of the Capitol--of my St-Gaudens double eagle struck on a two ounce .999 silver planchet--was facing the wrong way. Highly unlikely my "coin" or that of Dan' Carr's creation would ever be spent accidentally. Both are worth far in excess of their stated face values.
