I do believe that our OP thinks he has his hands on a legit 1799 dollar, but the past consensus is that it is fake. He persists. I insist. Fake. He wants NGC to certify his fake coin. He has no self-awareness how pervasive fakes of nearly EVERYTHING are in the Middle East. And the more that region associates itself with China, the worse it will get. But in one sense, the Middle East and China kind of deserve each other.

I wonder what tier that would go under and how much it would cost him to hear from them officially that it's fake.

  2. My submission, which was received at the facility on 6/7 and entered into the system on 6/24, dropped off the submission tracker today because it is older than 3 months - even though the submission still isn't finalized and I don't have grades back and the coins are still at NGC.

With World Modern turnaround times hitting 93 Business days - which is nearly 5 calendar months - NGC may need to change this so that we're not having to enter in our 7-digit submission number to check on the submission at a time when the submissions are hitting their final stages and / or when we want to use the Submission tracker to see the results.

At the end of the day, when we have to enter the 7 digit number, this is mostly just a minor inconvenience, but it would be nice to not have to deal with it and it seems likely that this is going to be an issue for a while for World Modern submissions.

A few years back I submitted over 100 US Philippine coins that had been graded by PCGS and ANACS to NGC in their original holders with permission to remove. I was curious how closely PCGS and ANACS would track with NGC grading. The statistical result was they crossed at virtually the same grades! NGC downgraded a couple of coins, raised a couple of coin grades, and graded two ANACS MS coins to details. All PCGS coins crossed at the same grade, but one was designated RB rather than Red.

IMHO NGC charges a $10 fee per submission sheet/number to pay for the check-in, payment etc. If a submitter submits a gold sheet, high value sheet, modern lot, and an economy submission, this takes more time to process and NGC has decided to charge us for their efforts. Whether this is fair or not, only the submitter can make that decision.

If they didn't charge this fee they'd probably just charge an extra $1 for each modern and economy coin. People would likely pay more but might complain less. lol

Maybe that is what the counterfeiters want you to believe. They create tons of garbage so their expert pieces slip through.

I think it more likely that you have lower tier producers and upper tier producers. The upper tier producers probably do appreciate the cover and false sense of security from the low tier producers but I wouldn't be surprised if they have nothing to do with each other.

So… I order and read a lot of old auction catalogs.  It is pretty common for me to see things like this in the write up:

”slight bag marks visible at K10”

    “Rim ding present at K8”

I always assumed that the K numbers represent the clock face (K10 is coin speak for 10 o’clock), however, I am far from sure of this…

A search in Google took me on a wild, non-numismatic goose chase.

Anyone have a simple explanation for what the K numbers represent in terms of a coin’s anatomy?

If you're seeing "at K..." I'd go with I'd go with the answer from DWL on GBrad's thread. But, to be honest, when I saw the title "K numbers" I was thinking this would be about the "Km" numbers, which are catalogue numbers.

Not that I’ve heard. They come with submissions. Pcgs boxes I’ve bought 3 for $10.  Never seen ngc cheaper than Bills post. Would you mind posting a link. Thanks

my 3 for $10 was from Coinvault with free shipping

I guess CCG and NGC need to advertise this better.

That's one of the reasons I've stopped using them. What do the normal sized ones hold, 20 slabs I think? I just had too many of them and they took up too much space and don't stack well on top of one another. The 20 coin capacity means having multiple boxes of sets and for me half empty boxes because I don't like combining two different partial sets into the same box. Then different TPG slabs don't fit well or at all in another TPG's storage box. Argh! :frustrated:My TPG storage box experiment lasted about a year till I couldn't take it anymore.

Yeah. They hold 20. I don't really love mixed boxes and try to avoid them, but I've also started a number of aborted and ill thought out sets / efforts over the years and have 2 boxes that are essentially full of just random stuff I've picked up over the years on a whim that never went anywhere. lol

The issue of multiple boxes for a set is a problem but it's something you hit on any large set. The Zimbabwe Note collection - Small as those pmg note holders are - is still split between 3 boxes and barely fits in 3 because it involves over 100 notes / checks now.

You can usually just wait and find a deal for a three pack on ebay or other sites, you can usually get them for less than that. Or a local coin shop or show would probably have them for the same price or less. I've gone away from using the TPG storage boxes, in the end I wasn't a fan.

I like them well enough. I haven't found anything I like more. lol I also have like 18 of them now so maybe I just feel stuck / committed. lol

When I checked, shipping was more than the cost of the box from NGC.

Shipping on 5 of them to Texas is quoted at $13.31 to me. So 5 would be $53.31 shipped, which is less than the $60 you'd pay MCM and way less than the $15-20/each most places charge. The main question is how many you're buying. I just buy 5-6 at a time when I buy and slowly fill them up, even if it takes me a while.

That has to be one of the dumbest questions I've ever seen asked on this forum.

I don't know what it is. I'm not sure if some of these questions assume 1) NGC has techno wizards working for them that can magically draw data from all over the place, 2) they have vast armies of people sitting around to check and update this stuff or 3) NGC and PCGS don't dislike each other nearly as much as they seem to and they're happy to partner to make the NGC registry better.

.. I cannot recall ever looking back at sets but just checked one and mine are also showing the top pop icon for non top pop coins in prior years.   That is a very interesting glitch.

Yeah. I don't even know that it rises to "nuisance" level as glitches go, it's just not technically correct. Hopefully there's some minor coding error that they can catch and correct. Failing that I couldn't blame them if they just left it for a while and focused on other things - I'm sure most would agree that there are other features and fixes we'd rather have if this isn't a minor fix. lol

Changes that are cosmetic in nature do take longer than updates that are needed for functionality of the program.

Which I think refers to the fact that you don't just have to code the feature, you have to design the UI, and then there's a good chance that someone high up has to approve that UI. lol

Finally (unless there are any legal issues which I am not aware of) I would suggest to allow members to choose (= give permission) if they can be contacted or not by other participants in the Registry via email and facilitate this function

So, this may be one of the things we had in the CS system that didn't carry over but I thought we could always send each other emails through the site. I've had people message me through the CS site many times over the years.

I see no benefit in crossing the coins due to an affinity of NGC, if you want them to reside here they could do so most comfortably in a Custom Registry set.

He keeps referring to it as his #1 set - except it looks like in the NGC registry he's only 50% complete and not in the Top 3. I get the impression that seeing that #1, if he can get it, means a lot to him.

I think if he does it, it all crosses and he gets his #1 he'll feel like it was worth every penny when that award icon shows up in January.

If his grades come up short and he is a few points shy of winning after downgrades I suspect he'll be playing a sad song.

I mean, for what it's worth, I spent about $140 in grading fees + shipping both ways just to get my 10Gs reholdered to make them look pretty together, so I kinda get it, but I think for him it's more of a gamble since I wasn't crossing.

Must have just been a temporary glitch, the top pop icons are not showing right now for your set.

It's only in the archived ones when you click on the award years for 2016-2020. The "live" set hasn't been showing them.

I noticed it when I was using that to see old versions of the set and how it developed over time.
