@Revenant I believe I have seven (top pops) but all are shared honors; none have been graded higher [elsewhere].  Perhaps, that too, is true for you.  It is an incredible accomplishment, well-deserved, any way you look at it.   🐓

Nope. The closest I have in that set to a Top Pop is a coin with 7 in grade and 1 finer.

  2. When I look at the "old versions?" of my 10G set that won the "Best in Category" award in 2016-2020, all of the coins, on every year, say they are "Top Pop." Except - I'm pretty sure none of these things have ever been Top Pops in the entire time I've owned them and they are not now - they weren't when I won in 2020, but they show that way in these screen caps.

Is this a "problem" - No. Not really, and I can't imagine fixing it should be a very high priority for NGC, but it does seem to be an error.

I say "Seems to be" because I can't rule out that you did this on purpose in the winning set display and I'm just wrong/uninformed. lol

A true collector doesn't concern himself with points.

I rarely find that one-true-way-isms are helpful.

While I don't think it's good to be overly concerned with points and rank or to let that / the registry be more important than enjoying what you collect, I think most people involved in a competition or ranking process like to know how that process works and want that process to be fair and consistent.

That said, I've never found the system or NGCs explanation of it hard to understand. (shrug)

Hi Ali I am sure Blackstone would be happy to make this investment, as without it it holds back our industry.

Blackstone is happy to make money. The Registry is a marketing tool at the end of the day. NGC does us the favor of letting us put PCGS coins in US sets and even splits out awards for those sets for NGC-only vs sets with PCGS coins included.

It is not necessarily in NGC's interest to bend over backwards more to make things more inclusive for their competitors and people who mostly support their competitor. It is not necessarily in their interest to show that they're willing to spend vast sums of money to do this. What message does this send to PCGS?

Try complaining on the PCGS boards about how they should allow NGC coins - which they don't. At all. They will probably ban you suggesting it.

I only got as far ad entering the cert number and a box popped up saying they would check on the piece and get back to me later. Could not go any farther.

There have been times in the past where I've tried to enter a coin and, while the coin was okay for the slot, it hadn't been input/configured. They fixed it within a few days and emailed me to let me know they'd fixed it and automatically added it. There have also been times when my cross-eyed self tried to put the coin in the wrong slot and I got an email saying my addition was rejected. lol (aka the nice version of "get your eyes checked and get it right, loser" - joking of course). You might want to check your spam folders or anything else and see if you are getting follow-up emails that are getting eaten that would explain what's going on.

It may be due to being an error. I have a 1959 Jefferson Nickel Improperly Annealed planchet error that was added to my “coin list” but doesn’t show up in my list of competitive coins.

Are there sets / slots it can compete in? Sounds like a great coin to have but it might be hard to place in a category. If it can't compete, is it competitive?

All are 70 graded with relatively low population #s. Price guide shows $345 for the 1978s 5c 70 UC but no prices for the 2021 50c,5c,10c and 25c that are all graded 70 UC, top pop. Is there a best of the best?

70 is perfect under 5x IIRC.

The pop numbers on the 2021s will probably increase over time.

They do tend to get a 3 or 4x mark up over 69s. They are nice - for when people want to spend the money on them.

Only time shill bidding can really work is if you know the high bidder is willing to pay significantly more than the underbidder. That's a difficult, but not impossible thing to know.

I've seen a couple of times when I strongly suspect someone was shilling to get a few extra bucks out of me on a $30, but there's really no way of knowing for sure. I stopped bidding early on that seller and started sniping at the end and all of a sudden the other bidder didn't come in with 24 hrs to go anymore. (shrug)

Same.  I've sold on eBay (various items, not just coins) since 2001.  And one thing that hasn't changed, which I'm sure applies in real world auctioning, is that bidders make it emotional even when the item at stake is not worthy.  And by worthy I mean one of those items that only comes to market periodically and has no equal.

At least for eBay, I find that I get attached to the idea of getting something as I wait for days to get to see it and that sometimes makes me want to bid more to not give up on "the dream." But I usually stick to my guns because I know buyers remorse stinks.

Depends on the coin sometimes good, sometimes mehh and sometimes no one cares. Check the population reports if it has a population of 1 could be very good, if there are 100,000+ probably less significant. Without knowing which coins I couldn't really say but in general, yes, a top pop would carry a premium.

I don't know. I have an MS65 Zimbabwe dime that is a  TOP POP and I would not expect that to hold up if there was enough demand to get more graded. It is the only one graded so it is the best! lol At the end of the day I think it's all just marketing and comparing sticks. lol

2015 March of dimes commemorative.  Once again it doent give his name, and you have to know your history to know the March of dimes was originally set up to combat polio (now it is for fighting birth defects because they conquered polio)  But it does have Dr, Salk pictured on the obverse.

Huh. I guess they just do not want to give that man his due. lol

Thanks for the information. I haven't kept up with the modern commems in the last 10 years or so. lol

Whenever I've seen mention of a die marker it's in relation to the small striations left behind after a die is re-polished to extend life.  OP did provide some pics of some of them on the coin he has which is helpful but then it's a whole other level of investigation to try to track down known die markers for a year.  It's not my area of expertise at all, but I imagine it's easier on older coinage where less dies were used to meet demand.

Yeah. Makes sense. I've heard of and seen die cracks and "die polish lines" but "die marks," especially with that post, just seemed so generic. It makes more sense now.

So, what coin are we talking about here?

I'm also wondering what matching at 300 points means, and what a die mark is.

And if a coin is struck on the wrong planchet/ blank that's usually a super rare and valuable error...

I'm guessing they have a coin that's rare and valuable and people are telling them it's fake.

That works, of course I don't want to have to sit around to those odd early hours just so I can "spring into action".  So I set a snipe bid in a sniping program and let it spring into action for me while I sleep or go do something else.  (Of course this only works on ebay auctions)

I just pop in my bid before going to bed and see the results in the morning. No sniping program. I find I still often win. (shrug)

  15. You know this is something I always worry about with bidding. There are times in my life where I've been tempted to bid something silly on a coin - something far higher than I think it should go for - just to make sure I win. The problem is - and the reason I've never actually done this - is that if someone wanted it more than me or someone else decided to try this "bright" idea it could turn into a disaster.

Yeah. I've had some irritating days when I lost something to a sniper bidder by 46 cents and seen the note pop up in my competition's set 2 weeks later, but I prefer that to overpaying and buyers remorse.

Sounds like some insufficiently_thoughtful_person bid the rent money on a coin and was having a panic attack. lol

Suggest rotating the reverse photos so the shields are parallel to the frame edge. As it is, it looks awkward. To me, the banner looks too large for the portrait scale(s) --- could it be narrower and a little smaller?

I don't know... call it a bit of "Dutch angle?" lol

I may go back and tweak the alignment on the reverses / think over some additional adjustments but I kinda like 2x3 ratios and the smaller portraits... but If I come up with something I like more... 🤷‍♂️ I do a lot of iteration.

Thanks for the input and pointing out the alignment

Ha! That would be one way to go, really not a bad idea. I like it or something similar, castle, ship, map, etc.. to tell the story.

I think I'll go with this until and unless I have a better idea. An Obverse and a Km-105 (1875 only) reverse and a KM-106 (1876-1889) reverse using the 1888 to show the different privy mark for the new Mint Master that took over in 1888.
