I can’t argue with that haha. Much better to spend it on coins despite the condition. Enjoy the hobby that’s all that matters

Oh and that $80 a day was 22 years ago.:preach:  I cant imagine how much it would be nowadays 4 packs of smokes a 30 pack of beer after the 3 hour bar tab and I probably wouldn't be here to talk about it anyway.  lol

That price guide is going to do nothing but disappoint. 45 Mercs in anything less than say VF are worth spot silver price. They are just too common and plentiful in MS. You buy a lot, and you can certainly collect what you want and makes you happy, but you will be much better served over time with fewer purchases and spending the money on a quality coin. For what you have spent on common year proof sets and items like this you could have a few really quality coins. Just something to consider but the most important thing is what do you enjoy so take this with a grain of salt.

But in the real world you would get melt value for the Barber, Mercury and silver Roosevelt and maybe 40 cents for the Indian.

I know it is not worth anything but melt. I mostly wanted the 1909 VDB so I bought the other stuff in hopes that looking at them under the USB Magnifier it may yield one keeper. I look at it this way in the old days I used to spend $80 or more a day on smokes, booze and scratch tickets  So when I buy junk off and on for 2,5 or $10 whenI am out looking for the good stuff, it is not that big  a deal.  And yes I do put money aside for the good stuff Woods. ;) That's why I am out there looking.

Sorry to say, but if you are hoping to get your money back out of this set any time soon you're going to have to hope that silver prices double.

No not really . But a 1945 Mercury G4 is $4 on the price guide and a 62 Roosevelt is $2.20 and 1904 G4 Penny is $ 2  .So I am close :roflmao: Not that anyone would want any of these :nyah:

That's not a real ANACS slab. It's an ANACS slab insert in an aftermarket shell.

Assuming that the insert and the coin actually go together, there is a good possibility the coin is undergraded. ANACS was pretty strict on modern proofs.

Thanks for the heads up on the slab Then the coin could have been changed out at one time. Or it could be the real deal but why change the case¬¬

  5. Thanks ,That's what I was hoping to hear, The coin is ok but I was thinking at 50 a bit high it was a mirror background in it's day but it has fogged a bit. Not sure if it would cross over unless cleaned up buy NGC conservation. MS 66 is a high grade for a Ben most are worth $400 but again Proof and BS are two different things.

Nope.....never.  The furthest south I've been in the East is New Jersey.  Never been south of the Mason-Dixon.  I've never even been in a Cracker Barrel!  Out West, I've been to So Cal......but that's definitely not 'the South" xD

Well you just gota take a ride down 81 and go and get some grits, or you can go to the local paint store and get some wallpaper paste. It will be a close second to grits :roflmao:

Well... I returned my 2000 ASE S$1 to L&C Coins a few weeks ago with no questions asked.  Just got my replacement in the mail today.  I am overly pleased with this one. Can't say enough good things about Kevin at L&C and their customer service.  If only all businesses were run in this manner........ Good job Kevin and L&C!

I got lucky twice this year aseS & W. Mostly I got dogs (no offense) milk spots on every dang thing 🤓🙀

I have one milk spot coin so far out of my whole 36 coin set of ASE's and I may replace that one if no others get spots. I heard somewhere if they don't get spots after a few years they most likely don't have the imperfections in the metal that brings the spots out. We will see :wishluck:

The only issue I have with that coin is that there's no weakness of strike adjacent to the void. I would expect the coin's rim to fade into the void if it had existed at the time of striking. In any case, NGC's mint error attributor is David Camire, so this would be his call.

Thank you for looking at the penny DW. No others from NGC have yet to comment on the ask NGC post. I will most likely be sending this in anyway I just wanted to know if it would be labeled as a Ragged Fissure or just bad planchet. As far as the strike you mentioned I don't think the hub would have tilted to make a uneven strike. I think the planchet was whole until after the strike keeping the hub even and then the piece fell out afterwards . I like the fact that it has been kicking around for 40 years and we are just finding it now.

That's insane!!! I would NEVER spend that on a Silver Eagle (which probably means next to nothing because I only collect Roman coins), but it's ridiculous!!

Yes it is a bit off the wall. I paid $40 for a regular strike type 2 coin and I think that was only because the dealer I go to paid $38 He only buys a small amount of bullion just to keep his regular coin customers happy. I can see maybe paying $75 to $100 for a proof slab coin but that would be my max. I know a lot of you guys had to pay more when the mint did there on-line thing but that was a different situation. I am not paying a dealer who (pe-orderd) coins for the regular price and is just trying to take advantage of the hype. They are also selling the old ASE type 1 for the same price 239.99 if you get them together you get a deal of $475.00  :roflmao: can you imagine how many nice Morgan's I can get for that price.(thumbsu

Fair enough, but I only meant that in terms of 70 graded moderns and market acceptance of 70 grades.  If the question was involving Morgan Dollars in MS 68 or something of that nature, my answer would have been entirely different and more in line with how you're thinking about things.  My answer applies solely to the whole 70 grade situation and no other coin grading situation.  No one would buy a modern coin graded PF or MS 70 at the kind of premium a PF or MS 70 brings without it being certified as such by NGC or PCGS.  I probably should have been more clear about that and I do apologize for my lack of clarity.

Here's a good deal ,  I got this price in a E-Mail from a coin place I have used in the past.... Sorry not this time.....NGC Graded Proof 70 Silver Eagles
    Limited Sale Price of $239.99

Thanks for those additional photos JP, your reverse photo in the op must have had something on the plastic or the lens which made the lines look blurry.

I thank you again. I know you know a penny when you see one LoL. and a XF40 is not a bad grade for one of these old catalog coin holders. I will put it in with the old mint sets I have;)
