  1. Keep it as a reminder to look for the ware on the high spots it is not easy to see all the little things like the veins on the leaves on the wreath or the talons are worn off. The cotton balls or the hair around the ear are smooth it is all a learning process and you don't want to pass it on to some one who is green. Do what I do I have a coin that was cleaned I paid $30 for and is just melt so I let the kids hold it and hand it around if they drop it I can sleep at night.. LoL
  2. Buying raw coins is tough Bill I wanted to look at a 1922 Pease yesterday at one of the antique dealers I go to a lot. It was on a shelf in a small zip bag. I asked if he thought it had been cleaned it was only $29 I took it out of the bag and gave it a look with my loupe and it had more scratches than a flea farm dog. Needless to say it is still on the shelf.
  3. Wow it sounds like a big investment. I would slow down to a crawl unless you are in a hurry to flip the coins ? It would be best to take some advice from the members here it could save you a lot of headaches. Coins that are in holders most of the time are ok but raw coins can be tricky you may want to weigh and post pictures here for advice on some of the coins. One coin at a time with clean shots of the obverse and reverse please.
  4. If it is copper plated zinc coin and just like how on the face of a lot of the coins it gets that wood grain look from being plated it happens on the edges also. It also could have gone for a short ride in a dryer. there are lots of ways and things that can mark up a coin.
  5. Processing like Cheese or a fine wine. Aged to perfection. Maybe even some toning going on.
  6. Wow that is amazing getting a job photographing coins for a auction house and only needing a phone camera.
  7. Welcome Vero, You are doing fine and you have to ask questions or you will never know. The coin is very common and I agree it is a cool coin but most of us feel it would have to be worth around $150 before we would send it out for grading and even then only if you want to sell it. your coin although almost 100 years old may be worth $30 give or take.
  8. Cool stuff Bill, You may want to check Heritage out tonight , they have some nice coins.
  9. Funny you should say that. I am the Chair of Trustees at my church and last week some people came by wanting to use a metal detector on the grounds. My church is in the National Register of historical sites. Being 275 years old with a cemetery that people in the old days would put coins on the grave stones. So I would think there are colonial coins all over the place, if it has not been searched already. Needless to say I told them no. I think it would be a bit disrespectful.
  10. You are correct my friend. And I am way off if we go by the new NGC grades of MS 65 MS 65 * MS 65 + and MS 65 + * .... That would be a potential of 79 extra grades Now that makes it way more fun to price a coin.
  11. Well that is dumb you cant look at your own coins? What if the mint sent you Wooden Nickels you would never know.
  12. That is the downfall they may only grade 68 or 69 and that would be a big disappointment not to mention the money out of pocket.
  13. Very cool I don't have any mint sets after 99 the US mint just seam to be going marketing crazy. With a lot more stuff to buy.
  14. Personally I would think any coin that comes in its own packaging should stay that way if possible to keep its collectability intact.
  15. I think the experts are going to ask you to weigh and measure it first and post the numbers here.
  16. Yes one of the higher amount or pennies struck of any year up to that point. 64-D was even higher. I think the most pennies ever was 1982 Large Date with 10 Billion coins. LoL we never see those here.
  17. Ya there are only 20 grades in-between 45 and 65 so that's close. But I do want to say it is a good looking coin Jblindy
  18. But you are asking here first so that's a good start. I would post a photo of your coin before you send it in to see if anyone can help first.
  19. Wow that's a good price about half the cost of the last one I looked at Like I said in a previous post the 43/2 should not be in the Circulated War Nickel Registry Set it is in a class by itself. But they also say you can't fight city hall.
