The same term must never have multiple meanings. Highly confusing and subject to abuse.
Hence "matte" is reserved for only Lincoln and Buffalo early proof made from sandblasted dies (1909-1916). Any other use requires solid explanations.
I agree. Terminology can be a real problem in this hobby.

I wasn’t really trying to mislead anyone. I guess I am just more apt to use NGCs lingo and that is what they refer to these coins as. I believe the ATS crowd would call them “satin finish”.

There were no "Special Mint Sets" in 2006. Only 1965,1966 and 1967.
The coin has damage on the obverse and is likely worth nothing to a collector of modern full step Jeffersons.
Aren’t all of the uncirculated mint sets from 2005 to 2010 considered SMS sets?

If your budget is anything like mine it will be hard to take some those top spots but its still fun to take part in. Im ranked way up well over 100 in my Washington quarter set and I know ill probably never make it into the top 50 but its still fun to display my coins in the registry.
I never in a million years thought I would ever be where I am with that set but, the closer I got the harder I started to push. High rank doesn't determine the quality of set. It’s all about the effort and dedication you put into a set that makes them great.

Thanks fellas I appreciate the kind words. My second set has turned into more of the toner set these days. A lot of them get graded a bit lower. I will admit I have paid some questionable prices for a few of my toners but I have also got some surprisingly cheap.
-
I am a toner guy and that is one of the reasons I like the Jefferson series. You can find some really nice color patterns on them.

Those are both listed as being "toned" which go for more.
I don’t see anything spectacular about the toning do you? Typical gold toning. I guess I just don’t put too much stock in PL coins. That is just me though. To each their own.

I am a bit surprised at those prices and that the PL designation on a 65 is bringing in that kind of cash. Wow. Guess I’m way off when it comes to the PL market.

Very interesting. Thanks for showing the auctions. I looked the NGC coin up. Someone definitely paid up for the star/PL combo grade and it is a pop of one and the highest star/PL combo grade. I personally would not have paid that much for it but some people just have to have those low pop odd grade one offs. More power to them. I’m sure it is an attractive coin. To put things in perspective, a normal 42 S in a grade of 66 (no PL or star or FS) is roughly a $35 coin and a 65 is $15/20. It’s hard to give a value when you add a PL designation to a coin. There aren’t that many and prices are very random. The same goes for an RPM. It could sell for $150 to the right person or it could sell for $15. Maybe it has some nice toning or another attribute that makes someone want it and pay up. That is generally why you don’t see prices in guides. Your coin looks to have a pop of 13 with some PLs in higher grades as well.

I'm not saying it is..but if that nickel is a possible RPM or DDR how much would that increase the value?
If it does turn out to be an RPM it would probably increase the value. How much, I don’t know. Most of the RPMs for the 42 S in the census are in higher grades than 65. Like I said. The prices are just random. Now a doubled die of some sort may be a different story as NGC shows none. I don’t know if Coneca or any of those other variety places show any. A discovery coin would be a pretty big deal but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Most likely it’s either going to turn out to be machine or strike doubling or something. You have a much better chance with the RPM if anything. There are plenty of those throughout the Jefferson series, especially the war nickels. I wish you the best of luck with all of it and I hope you will keep us informed on what you find out.
P.S. I appreciate the comments on my set. It has taken about 3 years to get this far and let’s just say that I have paid way too much for $3.75 face. We collectors are a rare breed and sometimes do questionable things to get what we want. I have enjoyed every minute of it though.
Best of luck

I would have to assume that the 66PL would have to be a full step coin to bring that kind of price.

Not a Morgan dollar guy by any means but I will say I like the 1885. What do you think it would grade out as?

I would say max would be around $30. Even with the PL designation, a grade of 65 is low end for a war nickel.

Thanks Lem, in hand the qtr obv is slightly less iridescent but the rev has slightly better colors than the photo suggests. I personally think it is under graded but the way the TPG's grade washies I do not have a good handle on.
I have always heard that whatever grade you think a GW is, expect at least 1 grade under.

I actually prefer the IS albums, being a copper guy, but I do have the 7070 (no gold) Dansco but no photos as I've never taken any of that album. Only needs a with moto seated dollar to complete the album, someday perhaps.
The Intercept line looks pretty nice as well. Hope you can find a nice seated dollar to complete your album. That is quite the accomplishment.
