  1. When I first joined this forum I like to never figured out how to get a picture to show up. Im not very good with technology anyways. Always said my pictures were to many megabites or whatever you call em. I ended up having to download a photo compressor to get them to size.
  2. Im happy with it. Saved a few dollars and the headache of everything. Its not gonna leave my personal collection anyway and i can see the coin now as if it was a new holder. Had better than expected results. Its like looking through a clean window at it now. That plastix you recommended really put the shine on it there at last . Thats some good stuff.
  3. They were pretty deep. They looked a whole lot like that. Couldnt get a very good pic of them with this crappy phone. I had to sand off a pretty good layer to get below them. They were to deep to buff away.
  4. It was scratched up so badly I had to. Very deep scratches. It was the only way to take them out. Its very smooth now. A very fine sandpaper works great on plastic. It still didnt take out a couple of the deeper scuffs but they are off to the side where they dont bother me. I couldve if I wanted to spend some more time on it but its good enough for me. I dont know what the previous owner did to it but it was bad. Looks like it had been run over.
  5. Wanted to updae the results on my scratched slab. Finally got my finer sand paper in. First hit it with 1000 grit. Then 2000. Then 4000 and last 8000. Then I buffed it by hand with some Plastix. Im very pleased with the results. I couldve spent more time and done a much better job but Im happy enough with the results now. The coin will stay in my collection so its good enough for me. Here is the results I got. Couldnt hardly see the coin before.
  6. That very generous putting it up to help everyone. Thank you. You done some great research.
  7. Very cool study Al. I enjoyed that very much. I may bookmark it if you dont mind so I can come back for info when I need it. It will be very useful. Thank you for sharing. That is some excellent work.
  8. For some reason these tone some amazing colors. Some are very attractive. Mine is toned but it dosent have the very attractive toning Im talking about. I still like it though. They were exposed to something over there that turned that silver some beautiful colors. Silver is very reactive when its exposed to certain things. Espically sulfur. Could have been something they used in that mint that was the cause. Maybe improper ventilation. Im just guessing some of the probabilities. May not have been any of the things ive guessed. Maybe someone knowledgable of these coins and the mints over in Germany knows why. Its very interesting though.
  9. They are around the late 1800s and early 1900s. Heres mine. PCGS MS66. Sorry to hijack your thread @Seamus8
  10. The half marks. I already have one. I really like the design and you can usually get them at a fair price. Theres several in that set though.
  11. Looks like a very small minor die chip to me. From what I can tell from the picture. These modern coins are completely full of die chips due to poor quality control at the mint.
  12. You will probably get a quicker answer if you post this particular question in the "Ask NGC/NCS" category. They grade quite a few medals but Im not sure which ones. The moderators on this site that works at NGC usually watch that category more than they do these others.
  13. I read a few pages in the middle of the book this evening and he dosent have a very high opinion of Franklin Peale. He spent 3 pages bashing him. He didnt give credit to him for his toggle press he invented. He mentioned others building it under the supervision of Peale. Didnt give Franklin any credit for it. All he wrote about it not once did he mention it Peale's toggle press. Unless he does later in the book somewhere. That toggle press changed the game if you ask me. He mentioned more of those other guys that constructed it than Peale. He goes into detail about other peoples inventions but didnt say a whole lot about Franklins. Thats the one thing I see he could have improved on. I know Franklin done alot of bad things but if your trying to write a history book you still outta not leave important information out because you dont like someone. He mentioned a few facts but he wrote quite a bit of his opinion also. He bashed Patterson pretty hard also but not as bad as Peale. He let the readers know right off the get go that he didnt like Peale. Peale done some bad things but I think he deserves alot of credit also for his inventions and improvements. Heres a page I came across. There are a few more also.
  14. Dont know what it is about the German marks and half marks of the late 1800s and very early 1900s but they tone some of the most attractive colors Ive seen on coins. Dont know if its something to do with their alloy. Or the enviorment over there. Or some chemical they were exposed to in their packaging. Its hard to say why but Ive seen some truly stunning toned half marks. Im planning on eventually trying to put a set together. I know it will never be completed in my lifetime but my kids or grandkids may finish it. Or maybe not. Still be fun to get a few. Im kinda getting off topic here. But for some reason they tone very beautifully.
  15. This book here came from a library in Alabama. Had an old stamp on it and the spot where u place the card to check it out. Last time it was checked out was in the early 80s. They passed it where we can carry without a permit a couple years ago. I still keep my CCDW card paid up though. Its handy if I want to buy a new toy. Dont have to go through all the 3 day wait mess. Just give them my card and take it home the same day.
  16. Im the same way. Hard to read something like that online. I enjoy walking over to my bookshelf and selecting a book. Then sitting peacefully in my chair where I can stare out the window once in a while. Then when Im done for a few I can just put a book mark in it. Then just pick it back up and read where I left off instead of having to click all over and find it on my phone. Screens also give me a head ache after a while. And im always clicking on stuff messing up the page. Im just old fashioned and would rather enjoy a book.
  17. Are you writing a book on them? If so Id be very interested in buying a copy after its completed. Ive been wanting to learn more about commeratives.
  18. Looks like it took a really hard hit from something pretty good size. It cut into the obverse and dented the reverse also. Post Mint Damage.
  19. From what little bit Ive read here and there in it it seems pretty interesting. I think I may just start on it and go cover to cover. Or at least read on it till my Washington quarter book comes in. Im off another week after this one so it would be a good time.
  20. I just recently purchased a book on Washington quarters in hardback. I could only find two books written about them. The other was David Bowers book. Ill probably get it next. Pretty bad of me not to buy a book sooner. Its my favorite series to collect (1932-1964) and Im just now buying a book after Im over halfway through my set. My mother in law gave me a few dollars and wanted me to buy myself something for Christmas with it so I got this. Im still waiting on it to come in the mail.
  21. Anyone ever read Don Taxay's "The US Mint and Coinage?" I bought it off Ebay a couple years ago. Havent really read it but Ive glanced through it a few times. Its full of interesting letters that were wrote back in the 1700s and 1800s. Also shows several coin designs and the designers and engravers of them. I may read it one these days. I was just wondering how accurate the information was. I know its copyright was in 1966 so I figured alot of the information is dated and new information may have been found now due to better technology to research with. Anyone who has read it, is it pretty accurate? PS: Thats weird how my thumb came out in the picture I took of it. Looks animated.
  22. The coins may be round but the plastic slabs the TPGs put the coins in after grading are square. Which is what the question was about for any new collectors reading this that didnt know he was being sarcastic. Also there are square coins, octogan shaped coins, triangles, and some ancients are all sorts of shapes. Also children, "Dont do drugs."
  23. Yea. They are definately uncirculated coming straight from the mint. It is very unlikely any would get a grade as low as MS61 or lower. They should all be fairly high grade. Mostly MS65. Some higher. Some could be lower. Depending on how many marks they recieve beating aginst each other at the mint.
