  1. Are they still using Laura Frasher's obverse design or did they switch back to John Flanagan's? I didnt know if they planned on using hers since it was year of woman quarters or if they planning on using it for now on?
  2. Its strike doubling. Its not the good kind of doubling.
  3. Definately not worthy of grading. If I were in your shoes I would buy some 2x2 cardboard flips. They are very cheap and they will help preserve the coin a little better. You can also buy storage boxes that are made for the 2x2 flips you can store them in and keep them safe and keep up with them. Most heaivly circulated silver coins arent worth grading. There are a few exceptions but I wont go into that now. The coins pictured in this post and the 1956 quarters in the other post would be great coins to put in coin flips.
  4. Ive got a very good friend who gifted me some quarters for my set. I need to try and get some good photos of them this weekend. Im gonna go Saturday and get a cord to hook from a camera I got to a lap top and see if I can get better pictures with it. Gonna try to fix a lighting box of some kind. With my phone when I do get them where you can see them good it has a glare of light right on the devices. Seems I cant get this phone to focus good neither.
  5. Ive heard a few stories of people losing coins. No one I know personally. Not coin related but I had an ATV stolen a few years ago. I still owed $5000 on it. I was young and not very smart at the time and didnt have insurance on it. I never got it back and still had to pay it off. It was less than a year old. Ive had other items stolen over the years also. I take it personal when it comes to thieves stealing off anyone. Even complete strangers getting ripped off by thieves. It gets under my skin. When another theif gets something stolen from them is the only time Im happy to see something stolen. A neighbor of mine got his house broken into and I was kinda happy to see the karma catch up to him. He is one of the biggest thieves around our parts. Hes stolen ATVs from people, stole a bunch of guns off a good friend of mine, stole a catalytic converter off my vechicle, and all sorts of other things. He was sure mad when it happened to him and I was happy to see him have to feel what all his victims felt.
  6. Very happy you got it back. Wonderful success story. Theres been a few people who havent been so lucky.
  7. Last one I had graded costed me close $80 bucks but I got the scratch resistant holder which costed I think $5 extra. I also paid for variety plus though cause it was an 1864 over 1864 overdate variety 2 cent piece. Ive been saving a few back when I get the money Ill do them all at once cause the shipping. I seriously think its worth the extra $5 to get the scratch resistant holders. Seems slabs are very easy to get fine scratches on them.
  8. I believe I would put those in some 2x2 flips and take the money I was planning on spending to have them graded and buy a very beautiful lusterous mint state 1956 P already graded by NGC or PCGS. It will be alot cheaper. It cost quite a bit to have a coin graded. If its not a $200 coin its not worth grading unless you are a dealer or bulk submitter who gets a discount. And those 2 have a combined value of less than $20. Hope I dont come off as mean or anything. I seriously dont mean to sound that way. Im just trying to help you. You be better off learning more about coins before you start having them graded. Remeber you have all the shipping and handling fees and everything else on top the grading fees.
  9. Definately not proofs. I definately would not pay to have those graded. You can buy those in mint condition already graded for way cheaper than you can have those graded. Those arent worth very much at all in circulated condition. The reverse on the one has a big scratch and it wont straight grade anyways. You can buy both those in that condition for less than $20 if you shop around a little. They are both circulation strikes struck at the Philedelphia mint. Both are in circulated condition.
  10. Different chemicals and exposures can cause them to tarnish slightly different colors also. Could be the acid it was bathed in caused it to tone that pinkish color. I found a West Point quarter and I wasnt paying attention and dropped it in my pocket with a zippo lighter. The zippo had leaked fluid in my pocket and it toned that quarter pink and blue colors. I also agree with @Coinbuf. It has that look to it they get from being exposed to acid.
  11. I remember laughing so hard reading those post a few years ago. That guy had to be joking and messing with everyone. Someone intentionally ground the copper layer off exposing the zinc core. Just a badly damaged cent.
  12. I always wondered if some of the mule errors were intentional. Get an employee at the mint who tosses a cent planchet or whichever they please while a different denomination is being struck. Then sit back and watch the web waiting for it to be found. Then seeing how much of a stir it makes. Seeing the TPGs grade it. Then seeing how many thousand dollars an unexpecting collector will pay thinking it found its way into the coin hopper by accident. Then get some kind of thrill knowing they was responsible for it. Im not exactly saying thats what happens but its sure crossed my mind. I can see an employee doing that on purpose to see what kinds of errors they can be responsible for and see if they end up bringing big money. I really cant wrap my head around the number of mules out there. You wouldnt think there would be that many if something like that wasnt going on. I could be wrong.
  13. I had to look at the date twice myself. The crease got my attention also. I dont see how a silver coin could even be struck at Philly. I wouldnt think they would even have any silver quarter planchets at that mint.
  14. That was the first thing I thought of as soon as I seen it before I saw this reply. Thought of a guitar pick.
  15. I was sure happy for the little guy. I think I was more excited than he was. And he was pretty excited. He didnt really know what he had. To bad I couldnt have caught him before he brushed it. It may have cleaned up nice conserved the proper way.
  16. Or soils are the same way. We got red clay, rocky soil, rich fertile soil, swampy mud, and other types soils. The place where he found that was in their yard in an elevated spot with good drainage. Its dark loose soil also. May be why it was preserved as well as it was.
  17. I think the only one they reconize is the 1952 proof quarter. Thats just off the top of my head from what research Ive done. There may be one listed I dont know about. Im pretty sure thats the only one reconized by the TPGs. I could very well be wrong.
  18. Thats great to hear. Glad they found it. I was wondering how it turned out for ya. Glad it turned out great.
  19. You can post this topic in the water cooler if you are an NGC member. Its a place to talk about topics other than coins. Many members vist the water cooler and talk about all sorts of off topic issues. They usually try to limit the newbie forum and other forums except the water cooler to coin related topics only. The water cooler gives a place to chit chat about other things such as this.
  20. He was very excited. Hes been going out almost everyday he gets a chance and searching. He probably found $10 worth of change in the past month. Maybe more. That was his oldest find. The rest was more modern. He found 1 wheat cent also. Cant remember the exact date but I remember it was in the 50s. Just a common one. I enjoy seeing kids getting into hobbies like that. He wants to start coin collecting. Ive got a few raw coins Im gonna give him. A Morgan and a couple buffalos. That may help him get a start.
  21. My sisters 14 year old stepson found a cool medal detector find. Unfortunately he done cleaned it improperly getting the dirt off. To bad for the rim ding also. These pics was taken by him. I thought it was a pretty good find. He was pretty happy with it and I would be to. Found it out in their front yard. Im suprised it wasnt damaged more than what it was from enviormental conditions. I thought it was in great shape having been in the ground.
  22. I sure need to. This thing aint much. I was trying turn it sideways where you can see it leaning better. Hard to tell from straight on. Im not much of a photographer neither.
