Sorry third party graders. It’s a term for the companies like NGC, PCGS, ANACS…

I was joking how things have went full circle. From the days of a cleaned coin is body bagged to today all the grading companies, or TPGs, offer restoration as a service before they grade and slab your coin. Not to say that restoration is equivalent to Johnny in the basement cleaning a coin with sand paper. But it if ironic the evolution of how cleaning has been treated over time. Normal and common - a big no no - still bad but we will grade and just say it has a no no - you can’t clean them but we can

Agreed. I don’t think a manufacturing process exists that doesn’t have tolerances. The most precise of components has some level of acceptable variability. It’s all a matter of how much is too much. I’m quite sure the mint would say these samples don’t fall out of acceptable range because they don’t spec to that level of precision under magnification.

I picked this up raw on a recent work trip. Fairly nice coin. I was just using it to test out a lighting setup for my camera.

I know it can be nerve racking but it’s actually very safe. If you just look in a big airport at the number of planes and people coming in and out at a constant pace, and think about how rare you hear of a crash, it’s quite safe. However I do understand the concern. And out there over the mountains it can get a little bumpy. It’s just the way the wind is pushed up by a the mountains. But usually nothing to it. I was in Salt Lake City a month or so ago and slept until we landed.

If it helps those planes have double and usually triple redundancy on all systems. A LOT of things have to go wrong before it’s even a concern. They have things to prevent any conceivable issue.
Do they have a chaperone? It’s always amazing to see the flight attendants tending to the unaccompanied minors. They treat them like kings/queens and they are the first ones off the plane.

Also congratulations. It sounds like you have raised a fine young man. That’s not easy to do these days. You should be very proud.

No truer words have ever been typed. The more I hang around dealers they more I see just how little most of them know. Quite honestly most of them don’t care to know. They can look up a coin/grade in Greysheet, pay less than the amount they think they can sell, and they make quick money. Many have no interest in the coins themselves or even know the basics. They are hustlers making a quick buck. The sad thing is everyone price shops and the hustlers often times buy cheaper and sell cheaper. There is little reward for being a reputable dealer, atleast at shows. Now I only hope if I help people and know a moderate amount of what they need to know it will pay off in the long run. I refuse to do what many of the hustlers do to make money, and they do much better at shows in sales than I do.

As an aside the show I was at this weekend took up donations from dealers to give kids in the YN program. I paid attention as they came and picked them up, and it played out much like I thought. Those that care about the hobby, and have knowledge/conscience donated generously. Kids are the future of it all. The hustlers didn’t donate or threw in a few worn wheat pennies. The whole mindset is different.

Roger I’m curious in all the various Instances where it states things such as credit to or charged to, were these individuals strictly liable for the financial loss? Or was this then a write off and charged to the appropriate department on the ledger based on who it was charged to?

Geez. I need to try and get mine a grade bump. I have a Proof 68 for this one, and it’s the most flawless coin I think I have seen. This one hurts your eyes to look at it. I love this coin, but I guess I could be persuaded to part with it for a steal at say $50k 😂. It’s currently at CAC, but I can easily ship it to you as soon as it gets back.

How many of these trolls (ratzie, Wayne, coinsrcool, etc.) are alternate accounts of yours? Just curious. I know you are always looking for new ways to antagonize the forum and avoid the moderators. You always seem to step in and “support” them and keep the threads alive. One of your many tactics?

Woods020 got a reaction from rrantique in Why do people refuse to think logically about coins?
A friend of my mothers just inherited a coin collection from her fathers recent passing. My mom had mentioned to her that I am into numismatics and said I would be happy to help them. This morning I get a text from her showing me one she is sure is “really rare”. Once she told me what it was I asked for a picture to start with. It took me 10 seconds from the time she sent it to me responding “sorry, it’s a Chinese counterfeit”.

Then the real fun begins. “How do you know?”, “Are you sure?”, “I don’t think he would have had a counterfeit”, “Maybe I should get a professional opinion?”. Despite me showing many many issues on this terrible counterfeit compared to an original she still isn’t convinced. I explained this is a counterfeit seen frequently and the look is very recognizable. To not be insulting I told her a dealer relatively close she could take it to for a second opinion or I would submit it for her despite knowing without doubt this is a fake, and a bad one at that.

I can understand hoping you have something really good, but at what point does reality outweigh delusions of grandeur?

Woods020 got a reaction from GBrad in Wheat Penny weight question?
Cents have went through composition changes through the years, but no silver. The various compositions have weight variances. I’ll list the list below. This cent isn’t a little heavy. I think the variance is +\- .13 grams, but a copper expert will soon correct that if it’s wrong. Are you certain your scale is accurate? Even if it is a little heavy I don’t think that is enough out of tolerance to be worth a premium, but others may correct that.

This is one of the best I have seen. I have reported and hopefully it gets pulled. This seller has 53 insane “error” listings for insane prices. I am taking the time to report most of them. However this is one that really made me laugh. This thing looks like it was trampled by a team of mules instead of a mule. And it is body bagged because PCGS doesn’t grade mules. Yours for the low low price of $49,999.99 and free shipping!
