  1. I believe I’ve seen a few world coins get the star rating already … very few compared to US coins though
  2. @Coinbuf well explained 👏 it all make sense now …
  3. Then explain to me what real difference between + and what is the real purpose of CAC green bean ? Not the gold , just the green ? I’m lost here I know for fact that what the + was used long before John Albanese started CAC … CAC to me means the same thing as + for that grade on a coin the plus was supposed to be for a coin in upper tier for the grade it was assigned isn’t that same ideology behind CAC green bean … I agree with you that CAC opened a secondary market for coins that was basically what the + was to do but failed at it not all coins merit that + …. I myself own a good handful of CAC coins a…
  4. They must of caught up with it because years ago when they started it there was no way of knowing … that’s why I stated “not sure now a days” I haven’t looked into it much or have it much thought …
  5. CAC supposed to bean a coin they feel is in the upper tier for that grade it was assigned possibly an up shot getting a higher grade … now it already had a (+) grade why even bother beaning it ? The + means it’s already on upper side of that grade but just a hair down from getting the next upper grade
  6. If I remember correctly years ago … it was PCGS that started all the (+) grading (of course PCGS owned by a bunch dealers desperate to make more $$$ and control the coin market) … I believe at first NGC didn’t want to adopt the (+) grade but later NGC caved in and joined the bandwagon on (+) grading… at that time I did notice a lot of PCGS coins graded with (+) compared to NGC grading not to sure now a days I haven’t really looked into it much population wise ? Pretty difficult to determine because when you look up for example a MS65 + coin on PCGS cert database they only show it under MS65 and not MS65+ …. if I also remember correctly NGC announced they adopted the Star (*) however as usual PCGS being snobs like they are in the market said they did NOT want to adopt the (*) star on their graded coins What I find goofy is I’ve seen a few graded coins (+) with a green bean CAC sticker 😒 kinda defeats the purpose of the CAC sticker when there is a (+) on the slab
  7. Star attribute is only based on grader’s eye appeal . Basically a unique coin the grader felt it was cool looking at so they gave it star … I have seen one coin with a Grade (+) star together on the same slab … I’ve only seen one example of that I believe it was a Morgan dollar if I remember correctly … However the Star grade has its small cult followers I know a few people who hunt down and collect star graded NGC slabs … it would be unique is PCGS would adopt this as well but they won’t it would open up a secondary market for star graded coins for their uniqueness …
  8. It looks like it been dipped at onetime but naturally toning back … however I never consider dipping a form of cleaning there’s a line between the two subjects . Cleaning to me is when someone take a rag or something else and rubs it across the coin’s surfaces that’s cleaning. Dipping doesn’t do any of that but remove tarnish maybe little of surface but it doesn’t leave traces of hairlines or rubbing … I can see why the grader would detail it… copper not supposed to be pinkish but to label it “cleaned” I would disagree there… however the TPG embraced dipped coins millions of Morgan dollars and other silver coinage it blast white screaming it been dipped they never say they are cleaned on the slab
  9. I hear you on that one as well I noticed the prices can vary a lot on MA-shops for same type of coin they describe in same condition …. I been buying very little on there lately used to deal a good bit on there in fact my about 80% of my Raw German collection been selected through certain dealers through on MA-shops … But the last 2 years I’ve been seeing new dealers on there the prices shot up for no real reason for common coins in common conditions they describe it like it is the “crème of the crop” blow it up look closer I can see contact marks all over it it’s NOT GEM basic trying sell a MS63 coin like it’s a MS67 Raw! I try haggle a price with them they get stubborn won’t budge… I’ve won German coins on heritage for 3/4 LESS than the cost of what MA-shop trying to charge where they get their prices ? I have no idea but it’s getting worse than EBay (which has a lot coins prices way way out of their value charts)
  10. @EarlyUS.com nevermind the pervious post I made… I apologize, I was looking up the wrong coin ! It is indeed saxony 1 Dreier one sold on Kunker auction but it was 1548 exactly same coin you have in your picture
  11. @EarlyUS.com I did little more digging around and research for you… I haven’t had chance to sit down at my desk at home and look into any of my German coin catalogs or books yet but I will when I get a chance … but I notice on your coin there no inscription (lettering) on obverse/reverse of the coin …unless it was heavily worn off or perhaps it a different denomination (without lettering) unlike the 1/4 taler as pictured in the links? https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces155195.html
  12. @EarlyUS.com Ma-shop is nice I order and deal with some dealers on there from time to time when I’m looking for certain German coins for my collection …. But lately their prices sky rocketed for no real reason even the graded coins stuff is priced way way way too high not even worth it … I tried haggled with a few dealers they are just hard headed won’t even budge $1 down !
  13. You are correct it a 1553 Saxony 1/4 taler … I’m not sure if it’s listed in any modern catalog book … I happen to collect a lot German coins myself I have other books like John S. Davenport on German Talers I’ll have look in there but I doubt it will be listed because most of the information is based on larger Talers … 1/4 taler was minor coinage back then but it is listed in the books somewhere probably an older German catalog used in Germany …. However I did a quick search on MA-shops and I found one similar to yours you can look link up for yourself , you maybe able to email dealer on that listing they can tell you what it is where the information is found too https://www.ma-shops.com/mueller/item.php?id=48877
  14. That’s a good “price reference” information but even NGC and PCGS prices can either be too high or too low for certain types of coins especially a hot series that in demands it’s more better get prices from current auctions or Greysheet if one wants pay for that …. (Although current NGC prices are a close ball park it’s just not updated often on prices) but not as current as market is … you and I both know coins are bid and can be bought more cheaper than we see prices on NGC ….if one does their homework and really look into it I laugh and shake my head all time I see sellers on eBay trying to sell their NGC graded coins exactly what NGC prices same could be said about PCGS coins and prices or they add that 12% or even more for a coin’s price on eBay that’s why a lot coins don’t sell well on there … that’s why we rarely see NGC ever post prices for gold and silver bullion the prices are changing so often so is some certain coins
  15. @Chelsea Phipps not sure who sold you these but BEWARE ! of “error coin scams” they prey on new collectors and novice who don’t know any better …. most coins even modern stuff is just not worth sending in for grading . You can buy them anywhere already in holders with grades on them save yourself the hassle of grading fees , insurance fees and so on long turn around times Waiting for coins to come back …. I only advise someone new to learn how to grade coins first and learn the coin market what’s really worth sending in and what’s not worth sending in for grading and authentication …. What you have in your pictures that stuff is everyday pocket change money that’s not even worth sending in for grading you’re better off saving your money buy a few numismatic books learn about coin collecting and buy some graded coins by PCGS/NGC …. Rarely do I ever send a coin in grading I own a lot raw coins as well as Graded coins (that dealer or someone else sent coin in long time ago had coin graded they paid fees and so on) I just bought the coin already graded in the holders … but after awhile when you gain more knowledge about coin collecting ,you’ll learn a majority coins aren’t worth anything nor the Expenses sending them in for expensive grading procedures I included some pictures to show you what coins sell for are the same coins in your picture (also notice the 3rd last picture with RED ❌ on it !!! Beware of scams like this !!! If that could. Was worth $500 That seller would of shipped it off and had it graded himself !!! But he didn’t because he trying to rip someone off!!!) on another note I do not care for that seller’s feedback 99% he’s definitely doesn’t know what he’s talking about with that basic looking 1988 Lincoln cent I have a hunch he’s going to rip someone off stay away from deals like this ! Us older collectors are here to help newbies learn to avoid SCAMs and make better choices when buy coins for their collections the choice is yours how you take this information in
  16. You seem to want have nice collection maybe get more serious about collecting ? First sit down , looks and think about what you want to get or start collecting when you go to coin show …. Do your research online look at current prices go by (auctions) *remember a coin is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it* … your redbook ? Leave it at home ! It not even worth bringing with you unless you prefer to use it for reference but do not go by prices in redbook if you are planning to do some haggling prices with a dealer it will make you look uneducated please don’t do that … here’s a list 1) do your homework determine what you coin or (coins) you want to purchase 2) I stress this often research and research prices (private dealer websites, auction house prices, eBay as well) get your prices right *double check them prices before you go to coin show as well* print them out on paper or write them down 3) go to coin show *set your budget how much you want to spend* and stick to it ! Only look for coin in grade that you wanted (don’t just opt for cheaper coin in lower grade just to have it) being a coin collector is also about disciplining yourself make right purchases don’t just buy for heck of it or wasteful spending on a bunch of low end coins that dealers don’t even want buy but are happy someone took them off their inventory… You want something that makes you happy to look at for long while to come something that appreciates as the years go on that’s what more serious collecting is about , carefully selecting coins with a nice eye appeal are the goals you’ll need learn when going to coin show and “spending discipline” is hard to master for novice but it’s key to being a good collector making good purchases
  17. Redbook is basically useless every year to buy the prices in there do not reflex the coin market through the year prices are changing often best to use other sources like auction house prices at the time , or look cert number up on PCGS and search for past auction prices to determine an more accurate ball park price for your coin…I ran your coin’s cert number through data base on PCGS cert lookup
  18. Sometimes it’s not even worth investing into a newer world coin catalog … Just as long as you got the Krause numbers out the book you can look it up on NGC’s world coins price guide for free and save yourself the money …. Unless you like looking at hard copies books or CDs for world coins whichever you prefer … I collect German coins most of the Krause German coin catalogs are way way out of date I don’t even bother buying updated current issues I just look on NGC world coin prices
  19. @BBrown75 I’m not here to pick your bone if you enjoy roll searching and collecting what makes you happy so be it my coin collecting brother …I have nothing against you how can I say it better ? Collecting true error coins is probably the most difficult and misunderstood type of coin collecting… I wouldn’t say it totally bothers me if someone is asking about a coin with some type of common MD or again common DDD … when someone blows up a coin image with USB camera your going to see all kinds of wacky little imperfections on the coin it’s just what it is… however where the problem lies is there’s YouTube videos preaching about these so called “imperfections” on a coin newer collectors or simply folks out of pure ignorance are taking this information and using it to Con people or other novice collectors that they got some kind of Rare Double die or some rare die variety… I included a few pictures for proof what selling online and eBay , pretty sad they prey on our novice collectors like this but it happens everyday and it’s not a laughing matter. Some of us care more about this hobby than other will turn cheek other way not say anything … you may think we are being mean or just strict we aren’t ! … we are frustrated on daily basic sometimes of all and misinformation that goes on in this hobby lately so called “error” coins been the main Con trick in ripping off younger and novice collectors , we noticed the hype on here as well seems to be daily norm when someone is asking if they some kind of “error coin” when it’s not … We do more than you think we do on here
  20. According to the article is a single tiny coin … they claim treasury department and mint can put any money value on platinum coin which is true… goes to show you how some folks are writing articles when it comes to our money system and precious metals .. notice how they say “coin” and not coin”s” … they are talking about one platinum coin with $1trillion face value … 😂 not worth its weight in pure Platinum not at $1trillion , I’ve heard about this $1trillion coin idea before it popped up like 2 years ago or so … now it’s here again , if it does pass (which I doubt it would) I bet you they try to get Biden’s bust on observe of the coin too on another note I agree it should be 1 trillion worth its weight in pure platinum but all they have to do is get the treasury to mint this tiny platinum coin at $1 trillion then take it to federal reserve deposit and the BAM! the government got $1 trillion dollars to spend ! Sounds like dark magic , that’s our government sleazy as they can get they passed that law a long time about platinum coins can have any denomination put on them regardless of the weight of the coin… The coin — which wouldn't need to be bigger than an average coin, and can be made quickly — is part of a potential debt-ceiling loophole. The Treasury Department can mint platinum coins of any denomination. That's led to a school of thought that says Yellen should simply mint a trillion-dollar platinum coin and deposit it to pay off the debts until a more permanent solution can be found.
  21. I agree I have seen some good in registry sets for classic coins has help drive the prices up somewhat… I’m not against registries who ever does them so be it .
  22. History taught about great “hype” wave in coin collecting.. same happened to Commemorative half dollars in the 80’s they were hyped so badly guys were paying thousands and thousands of dollars for a single half dollar the market collapsed today we can get most of those half dollars in affordable price range huge money lose to whoever purchased them at sky high prices back then I see registries no different they may want shell out high prices for a specific coin just to build registries sets sooner or later the market may or will collapse we all seen it over the years , I guess there’s just some people out there who have money to throw away at stuff like that they don’t really care either
  23. @bobbyboshay if it helps … there’s a Vam list to look up your coin http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/1878-P_VAMs
  24. Looks like a few German 2 or 3 marks not sure which are sitting at top of the bag they are pretty circulated I don’t know who would waste time counterfeiting a worn German mark
  25. @BBrown75 fair enough I accepted and agreed to your statement . I wish you well and happy collecting
