They're all going to zero. It's the "uber smart" millennials that think this time it's different, that are pouring their money into this garbage.
Personally, I can't wait for all of them to crash to $0 so I can laugh at all the moronic fools that bought this utter garbage.

Alex in PA. reacted to Mr.Bill347 in It was a very good year. 1963
I was a sophomore in High School. A quarter could buy a gallon of gas or a quart of BK root beer, and what I got paid for mowing the lawn. LOL

I don’t think the coins are counterfeit.

Alex in PA. reacted to RWB in 1922 silver dollar
I'm asking because the OP must have some basis for thinking the coin is a proof. After hearing back, I plan to then provide the information. This is standard educational methodology that includes engaging the student -- but it also determines if the student is receptive to the information. (A similar approach is used for assessing the relative reliability of research information.)

How about you actually explain these things to the OP rather than ask questions you know good and well they can't answer? This is the newbie forum. Newbies often don't understand the difference between proofs and really shiny business strikes. You could help them, and certainly have the knowledge to do so.

Interesting thread!

Alex in PA. reacted to gmarguli in Identification. **Final result update**
I'm not sure how accurate the lists of "what we will grade" are. Seems like they'll grade just about anything they can figure out what it is.
What it is is a Death of Paul Von Hindenburg medal minted by L. Christian Lauer. Beyond that, I'm not sure if there are any reference books of medals minted by Lauer.
It's not super rare as I've seen them around, but it's not close to the more common design ones that are everywhere. An example sold last year in a Moller auction along with another medal for $73.

No, they turn it into $20.00 Saints.

After seeing those pictures one has to wonder what type of person it takes to work around all that gold, especially the bars, and still be honest?

It's always fun to see some pictures posted from coin shows, Charmy would do a great job of it, but I haven't done one for ages. How many of you went and did you notice anything different? I know the town has changed a lot since COVID hit and closed many businesses. Everyone cautioned me that the Summer Baltimore show would be pretty slow, which set expectations low, but I honestly think it was better than the last one. The trading rooms were super busy on Tuesday, the Wednesday dealer/early bird traffic was strong and Thursday's foot traffic was great as well. All the regulars complain about how many good restaurants have closed down out there in the past couple years, but our favorites like La Tavola are still kicking! It seems like Dollars have come down off of their highs, but lots of people were still buying them. Did anyone else have some highlights or new purchases?

Alex in PA. got a reaction from HWY101 in How reliable is sending your coin to get graded? Is it safe?
I can't count the decades that I have sent coins to be evaluated. Not ONE has been lost, stolen, misplaced or sent to Mars. First I sent to ANACS then along came PCGS and NGC. Over the years I (my opinion only)have found that I like PCGS for silver and NGC for gold. Yes, I suppose there are a few crooks in any industry but I have yet to find any in the USPS that I deal with. Just recently: Left PCGS in CA via USPS arrived in PA 3 days later 9 coins value $10,000.00 plus. If I'm a bit scratchy this morning it's because I like the USPS workers in this little town.

Alex in PA. reacted to messydesk in Morgan Spitting Eagle 1891 CC VAM
The official specification for this variety (and VAM 7) mention a die gouge. I would say that what is on the VP description is a transcription error.
In this case, you would get the people that are responsible for creating and maintaining the official VAM descriptions. Lucky for you, I decided to pop in today.

So you're saying that because you like this site better, you'll get better advice here than you would at a site that specializes in the subject.
That makes no sense. But then again, many of the responses you've given to previous posts make no sense either. I guess that speaks to the credibility of the information you post here.

Alex in PA. reacted to Oldhoopster in worth having graded? GENERAL MOTORS EXPERIMENTAL PRESS (circa 1967?)
A few months ago on another forum somebody wrote in about the experimental GM pieces. I can't find a link, but if I recall correctly, they were involved with maintenance and/or dismantling the press and found a few pieces that were lodged in the equipment. Short story is that he was advised to have them authenticated, which he did, and was apparently doing well selling the graded pieces (through Heritage I think)
Past results are no guarantee of future performance, but you may want to search the heritage archives to see what sold recently

Alex in PA. reacted to VKurtB in worth having graded? GENERAL MOTORS EXPERIMENTAL PRESS (circa 1967?)
I get really nice Hard Times and Civil War tokens slabbed, but not mundane ones. That’s my core advice - slabbing is for exceptional coins, generally speaking, not mundane ones.
Edit: Every time I type the above, I get reminded that about half of slabbed coins are American Silver Eagles, and I get deeply depressed about third party grading.

Slightly off-center but nothing that would bring a meaningful premium.
