By your account, the coin had lain on a window sill for 15 years.  This much we do know: that coin did NOT reside on any such sill of a window within the five boroughs of New York City. But we face a far greater, insurmountable obstacle in rendering an opinion:  I do not know how much our Grand Master knows about such matters, but he is waiting in the wings ready to pounce on anyone who can go beyond mere conjecture and state conclusively, without a shadow of a doubt, exactly what happened in the case of your coin absent not-up-for-debate, conclusive proof. Consequently, any idle comment I may or may not have an inclination to express, shall have to await until he has spoken, ex cathedra, after which I can come out of hiding, and state with complete confidence: I agree... [for any number of credible reasons I can think of at a moment's notice].

I can’t believe this needs to be typed, but “gradeflation” is when coins of identical quality (or even the very same coin) keep getting higher and higher GRADES. It has nothing whatsoever to do with prices.

zadok reacted to Sandon in What does the US Mint mean by "Impression"
In other words, the number of "impressions" means the number of pieces made in the indicated metal.  If they were coins instead of medals, we would refer to the number of pieces "struck", rather than "impressed", by the dies.

I wholeheartedly agree. The topic seems to have been abandoned but I don't understand why. Sandon's reply was so comprehensive that all can benefit from revisiting it.  As regarding the Peace dollar, you could not pay ME to accept it as a gift. For the grade and price it lacks Wow! power, period. [To the OP:  I do not believe your User name sufficiently captures your essence.  I would like to respectfully suggest "G Money" as more befitting your nature and reflective of your station in the life.]

You may want to save your money and shop around a bit. This is not the kind of hobby you need to rush into. I think you could find a better one. It looks like a nice coin but not a MS65 PCGS coin

...this is old news, it really has nothing to do with our monetary/financial markets...it has accomplished its intended purpose, having u n others talk about it...gold is exactly what it has always been, a repository for assets...its price in $s is inconsequential, its relative to whatever everything else is, there r those that have it n those that dont....by the way, josephine said she is packing but its not a six pack....

This is the valuable one. This is the one that leaves all the nattering nabobs of negativism dumbstruck. Not a murmer from anyone. Why? Because it is an ERROR!  Whoa!  It was accorded absolute immunity at birth. Now a formerly unacceptable medal is not only acceptable but fawned over.  So much so that it may be able to command a premium. I believe this ERROR was committed with calculated, premeditated malicious aforethought but either way, CARR has been vindicated by nothing more than an accidental sleight of hand. ERROR?  Don't be silly! T'was an accident... could've happened to anyone.

Our Grand Master laid down the gauntlet on one thread recently, and two striking things did not happen. He was neither challenged nor belittled. His tactic, if by happenstance or intent, is to sit by, let everyone have their say, and POUNCE!  Not all knowledgeable people agree and many forgo commenting to avoid the commotion that doing so would most assuredly ensue.

zadok reacted to Sandon in U.S. Mint ANA Convention Souvenir Sets
Back when I attended college in Washington, D.C. in the late 1970s and early 1980s, I would go to the gift shop that the U.S. Mint (then the Bureau of the Mint) operated in the Treasury Building. The items offered for sale included these presumably leftover souvenir sets that had been assembled for the 1978 and 1979 ANA conventions. (As I recall, there was only a summer convention in those days.)  Although the items included in these sets are of no great value, the sets themselves are interesting mementos. I don't know how many were assembled and, while they might be found in dealers' "junk boxes", I don't remember seeing them in recent years.
The 1978 set, created for the 1978 convention in Houston, Texas, included a then new 1978-D Eisenhower dollar and a small bronze Lyndon B. Johnson medal, along with a card explaining that Eisenhower and Johnson were "Our Two Texas-Born Presidents".

The 1979 set, commemorating the 1979 convention held in St. Louis, Missouri, included a 1978 Eisenhower dollar and a 1979-P Susan B. Anthony dollar (common narrow rim variety), plus a card entitled "The Old Gives Way to the New" with biographical information about Eisenhower and Anthony and information about the coins.

I don't know whether the Mint created souvenir sets like these for other ANA conventions, but it is likely that such sets exist. If you have any, please feel free to post them here.

zadok reacted to Sandon in 1970 D Roosevelt Dime Reverse Subsistence
"Subsidence" and "subsistence" are different words with quite different meanings. The posted coin may exhibit reverse die subsidence (not "subsistence"), or a portion of its reverse may have been struck through some soft or thin material that caused the depression but allowed the design to still show through it weakly.

Your topic and post inspired me to post a related thread provocatively posed as a pointed question.
There is a refrain from an old Janet Jackson number which expressed the disappointments and lamentations of a number of members who took that recent quiz regarding what coin designs they would like to see resurrected on future coins.. That refrain, as paraphrased, went "what-have-you-done-for-[us]-late-ly?
Here's an idea. I do not know if the Federal Reporters and Supplements are still being published in bound volumes or are now on-line, but the state's Penal Law and Criminal Procedure Law are updated yearly with stapled revisions which are simply slipped into a back "pocket."  The main volumes are published only when growing supplements are two unwieldy to insert and handle. The paper inserts, outdated, are discarded.
Maybe that's what should be done here. Go ahead and maintain the latest edition, but issue supplements to complement the text.
How many significant changes justify the expense of re-ordering a line-up? (Personally, I don't believe 100 is necessary) But the answer to the question of my topic is damning: three. Only THREE coins minted in the past 100 years made the 100 Greatest U.S. coins list.  That speaks volumes. The hobby is divided between collectors and investors. How many of the Greatest Coins can be found in change?
