One thing about Wildwinds I learned from my ill fated and impossible Faustina II project.......Wildwinds is not complete. It was what lulled me into the incorrect belief that a full set of known Faustina II types was something that was remotely possible. It's a good resource for a lot of ancient coins, but it doesn't have everything. Or even close to everything. OCRE seems to be more complete than Wildwinds, but maybe a bit less user friendly than Wildwinds: http://numismatics.org/ocre/

That needs to be taken down from eBay and relisted on Etsy. That is prime Etsy material.

Excellent post, Jonathan and very necessary. I think ancients confuse people more than any other kind of coin. I hope that everyone wanting info on ancients reads this first. It'd probably make the process better for everyone involved. I wonder if we can get this pinned.....

Yep....you wouldn't think snow wuss from a native of the Finger Lakes and massive Canadiophile (thanks for the kind words about my home. I love it when it's not filled with 8 feet of snow!), but yes....total snow wussy. As for my avatar, it's the character Mohawk from Gremlins 2. I'm a native New Yorker and it's time for me to come out of the closet......I'm a total, 100% snow wuss. I will go to great lengths not to have to drive in snow at all. It scares the c*ap out of me!!! Thankfully, I work from home, so it's not a huge problem. However, walking in it....that's a whole different story. I've gone on many a snowy trek through wooded areas I could walk to in search of owls in the winter (I'm also a bird nut along with being a coin nut).

You can post wherever you like based on your inquiry or what you'd like to say. It sounds like you're not a newbie to collecting, but this Newbie forum is a nice place to hang out.....you meet new arrivals here and can help new collectors by sharing your knowledge and answering their questions. I enjoy doing both myself. The US, World and Ancient Coins forum is also good. You'll get the feel of where the best place for your posts are as you hang out more and interact with us. It's one of those things that you learn by doing. That's how it was for me, anyway.

I think you'll fit in just fine. There's nothing wrong with cracking a slab if that's what you want for your collection. You'll meet many people here who are into U.S. classic stuff. I'm not one of them myself (I like Canadian, German and ancients. Along with paper money from almost anywhere), but it's cool to have a diversity of collecting interests. Most of us are just hobbyists here, like you. I'd definitely fall into that category....I'm just an Educational Sales Coordinator that sells coins occasionally to feed my numismatic addiction. As for learning the forum, the best thing to do is just explore and ask questions. Most of us are very willing to help new people out.

Man, Bill, it's been a while for me with any Victoria coinage, but I have to agree with Roger. I think he's got it just right. They're still nice coins though....I wouldn't kick them out of bed

Man, Bob....you're right. It does look like it could be an earlier denarius!! Like Jonathan, I'm not completely invested in my first guess, either. Jonathan....I know you have a much better research library than I do (but that's going to change once I start pulling in some good paychecks here soon), so I'm going to defer to you on this one. It's definitely before the time where I'd consider myself versed in ancient coinage.

I think you nailed it, Woods. We can only do what we can do, you know? Not everyone is destined to collect. But maybe I can offer a suggestion. Maybe you should at some point much later, since you're only 39 (younger than I by two years) and you'll likely outlive some dealers who are presently active, do some research and leave her a list of reputable dealers or numismatists that she can contact when the time does come for her to inherit and sell your collection. If you do that homework for your daughter, I'd say that her chances of getting a fair price for everything goes up. Just a thought.

Tell me about it, Mike. That's my exact issue regarding these coins. I'm hoping that NGC will reconsider grading them the way they have been the past few years. It sucks to have a beautiful, PL Cameo coin come back from NGC with no acknowledgement of that status on the slab when you've paid NGC good money to grade and attribute your coin. That happened to me one too many times since 2018.

Hi Patman! Well, in looking at your coin, I think it is damage, unfortunately. If you look closely, you can see how that last 9 is actually somewhat deformed, which indicates to me that it was hit or gouged at some point after it was minted. If it had been something that was struck into the coin, the last 9 wouldn't be deformed like that. I could be wrong, but this is what I honestly think in examining the photos.

I agree with your assessment on the appearance, Jonathan......it looks like Greek or Indo-Greek. But I think we need to wait for more information to really have what we need to establish it's true identity.

I agree and your explanation makes sense, Roger. I'm not trying to make a case for contrast that doesn't exist. I have many 1968-1975 coins that clearly have cameo contrasts and reflectivity on par with the nicest 1967 U.S. Special Mint Set coins. I'd be perfectly content with an MS Cameo PL grade from NGC on these coins. However, I'm not happy with NGC completely ignoring cameo contrast and reflectivity that is obviously there just because the coins are considered "Uncirculated". Which is exactly what NGC has been doing with the 1968-1975 coins since they started using the term "Uncirculated Set Issue" for them rather than "Proof-Like"

Speaking of PO1...I'd love to see a Canadian nickel dollar in that grade. That would really be something.

I did a little research and the 1972-D No FG seems to have some decent value. According to the PCGS Price Guide, it's worth $275 in XF. However, Vero's coin is lower than XF and I think B.C.'s right......I think I can see the "G" of the "FG" peeking out in Vero's second photo. I'm guessing that this coin started life with at least the G and the heavy wear has impacted the visibility of the initials. Vero's coin is actually one of the most worn clad Kennedy Halves I've ever seen, and it's actually interesting to me for that fact. I wonder how such a little used coin type managed to get that kind of wear.....it's on par with Washington Quarters I see in circulation of a similar age. Maybe it's a pocket piece........
