  1. What an amazing experience and memory to share, Mark. That's exactly how we ensure that our hobby stays alive, and Mr. Stack certainly seems to have known that. Thank you for sharing that with us. It's an amazing tribute to the man.
  2. Congrats, Greg!!! That's very cool. All of that searching for DDs has paid off!
  3. I'm with Jonathan.....that looks like tarnish rather than toning. Based on the photos, I'm not hot on that coin, honestly.
  4. Well said....I agree with this statement 100%.
  5. It would have been even more insane than it was. And Breen would be known widely by the general public rather than just among we numismatists, science fiction fans and...those engaged in Breen's other activities. He'd be reviled by a much larger number of people than he is now.
  6. Lots of skeletons in lots of closets in our hobby, it would seem.
  7. In all seriousness, though, it's really a shame that Breen continues to haunt the hobby with his lies and other activities. I don't know why people still use his work for anything, being as full of blatant fabrications as it is.
  8. I agree with that sentiment wholeheartedly Roger. I wouldn't have even known about Uncle Wally's book if not for this CoinWeek article from 2015: https://coinweek.com/editors-choice/confronting-breen/
  9. That's a very nice tribute, William. I actually have a 1923 Danzig 2 pfennig in honor of my grandfather. He was born in that area in 1923.
  10. Definitely. Mr. Stack certainly leaves some big shoes.
  11. So true, Roger. But, apparently that book on pederasty he wrote was very well researched. I guess we know Uncle Wally's true passion and interest in life......
  12. The numismatic community has sure lost a lot of people in the past couple years. My condolences to Mr. Stack's loved ones.
  13. So true. I just picked this coin up, which to my eye looks a lot like what many Special Mint Set coins look like. It's proof like, it's well struck and it has some contrast to the devices, but it's not a proof. However, I don't think the Muldenhutten Mint made any Special Mint Sets in 1953.......
  14. Or this: The 1964 options were a proof set or a plain old, not special, mint set. And that was it. Just those two options and nothing more. Next year was the first year of Special Mint Sets and they're actually not very special. To B.C......this envelope matches up to what you posted, so you have 1964 Mint Sets.
  15. Definitely not. 1950-P nickels typically look pretty bad, even in mint state. Yours is definitely appealing and of premium quality for the issue, I'd say.
  16. Hi William! I know the sets you're speaking of and I think that the protectors you are looking at would work fine provided the sets will fit in the protectors. I don't remember the exact size of those sets, but you should be able to find something that they'll fit in, I'd imagine. I hope this is of some help! ~Tom
  17. And the battle starts again.........for the record, I'm with RWB. There are no 1964 SMS coins and TPGs and auction companies are not infallible.
  18. Hi Joe! I'm with the others.....damaged and stained with some residue on it. I think if you want to clean it, go for it. That coin has nothing to lose!
  19. Here's a real treasure I picked up for my early East German collection. The 1953-E 10 pfennig is the second most difficult regular issue to acquire in the early East German 1948-1953 coinage run. This one is something special and cost me considerably more than my previous pickups, but still at an amazing deal for this coin in this condition. These are the seller's pics:
  20. Thank you so much for handling that one, Bob. I was trying to think of the best way to state that without opening that particular Pandora's Box again!!! Well done
  21. Hello and Welcome, Floyd! Bob has given you some very good advice. I'd get the opinion of at least one professional dealer before spending the money of joining NGC and submitting the coin in queston. Good Luck
  22. So true, Neo. It succeeds to a high degree. Which is a lot more than we can say for the obverse, which fails to just as high of a degree.
  23. Night, Hog. Sleep well, my friend and have a great day tomorrow! I should go to bed soon, too....gotta keep sleeping off this damned cold!
  24. That would be Dr. Sally Ride, Hog. I know that because my fiancée is way into space exploration and has gotten me into it. She has a NASA t-shirt and I have one with the logo of the Soviet Space Program on it. And I like that one, too. My favorite is the Maya Angelou one, personally. I just dig the motif and I think it's a great design that represents what Maya Angelou was all about.
  25. And those would have been good choices. I think that a lot of collectors of Washingtons would share your thoughts, my friend. Flanagan's work is a good design. Fraser's is not.
