  1. This is very good advice. If you're interested in IHCs, I'd follow it. I definitely would not pay to have the coin in the pics graded. You'd be throwing your money away.
  2. That girl got seriously smacked by the rims of a few other coins in a bag. But that's okay....most of my girls spent at least a thousand years in the ground. As far as a grade, we'd need full photos of both the obverse and reverse to help you there, JP.
  3. Hi again Jaynh, In looking at your photos, there is nothing present that would indicate a doubled die of any kind to me. It just looks like a regular 1972 cent. From these coins you're posting, I think you need to read up on doubled dies. You haven't posted a single coin that could even possibly be a doubled die. This site will help you out: https://www.doubleddie.com/58222.html
  4. That. Was. AWESOME!! I need to get more in depth with my attributions, I see. I'll work on that.
  5. I think that elephant needs a new human as well.....it clearly has its human significantly out-brained. Even the guy who succeeded has to have a death wish to attempt that.
  6. Thanks for the diameter and the weight, Gus So I still think it's Constantius II and the coin itself is an AE3. As Jonathan said, the reverse is GLORIA EXERCITVS and I'm still pretty sure the mint mark is Thessalonica. Still not sure about the oficina mark....I just learned about those yesterday....but that's what I have for this coin. ~Tom
  7. I think the shark would have done better than him, too..........I'm starting to think that we're getting to a point where we need to declare the shark the winner and send it a nice plaque, a certified coin with a special label and a $500 grading credit.
  8. Yeah, he did. Caesar totally got the shaft. Things went a whole lot better for his great-nephew though.
  9. Thank you so much for that.....I learned something brand new today!! I was completely unaware of oficina marks. Which is probably unsurprising given where I actually live with collecting.....this whole thing is not an issue with Faustina. It's either an imperial issue minted in Rome or it's a provincial issue minted elsewhere, so it's much simpler!! I think this was the very first time I've ever even looked up anything from Constantius II and I'm just happy I got that much correct!! It definitely helps knowing that with Aorta and those symbols.....I didn't know what they meant. Admittedly, the bronzes from this era make my head spin still!!! I'll try again once the OP posts weight and diameter, but I'd love for you to check my work
  10. Hi JAnsley.....I hate to say it, but I'm still feeling it's artificial toning. It can be tricky at first to discern natural and artificial toning, which is why I'd recommend newbies stay away from raw toned coins until they've got a little more experience under their belts with that whole thing. What I would recommend is trying to look at as many toned coins which have graded with NGC and PCGS as you can and really examine them....take in how they look, their characteristics.....all of that stuff. It should definitely help. It's never bad to look at a lot of coins anyway.....you learn a little more with each coin that you examine.
  11. Cool....we'll see what we think when the new pics are up.
  12. Dang Bob.....my breaching shark would do better at dunking than that guy, even on dry land!! Talk about an epic fail!!
  13. Update-the 1999-P Anthony Dollar in PF 69 Ultra Cameo has sold and the link has been removed. Thanks So Much!!!
  14. I am completely going to admit my ignorance here, Jonathan.......does that mean my attribution was off the mark? I wouldn't be surprised in the least.....this coin is outside of my little Faustina world
  15. A lot of coins from that time have been cleaned, that is true, but there are many that haven't been as well. If your coin was cleaned, that could account for what I was seeing in the photos as well.
  16. Zadok has it right. And in my experience, the premium tends to be whatever premium someone is willing to pay you when you list them on eBay.
  17. Hi Jblindy! Well, in looking at your Morgan, I can tell you it's not the Oval O. As far as grade goes I'm going to go with XF Details because the coin looks like it has some residue on it. Just my humble opinion, of course. ~Tom
  18. It's cool to find a proof out in the wild. Very cool and thanks for sharing it!
  19. Hi GoldBear! Well, this is later than what I collect, but in looking at Aorta, I believe it's Constantius II. It looks like a bronze coin and I believe the mint mark is Thessalonica, which is SMTSE. But that's the best I can do. There are different types of bronzes in this era of Roman coinage, so we'd need a diameter and a weight to tell you more. I hope this is of at least some help! ~Tom
  20. I'm with you there, Mike, and I'm glad for it. Wally Breen died exactly where he should have......in prison. Though I have to admit to wondering how Breen would have responded if he had ended up in a house, on T.V., being confronted by Chris Hanson........
  21. That's okay, JAnsley. We all have bad days.....I've been known to have a few of them myself . Here's the thing......the toning on that coin doesn't look quite right to me. I'm afraid that it may have been artificially toned. Of course, it could be an aspect of the photos, which are good photos but coins can look different in photos than they do in hand, even with good photos. I could be wrong, and I sincerely hope I am, but I do have concerns about the coin.
  22. Yep. You nailed it zadok. I'm a buyer and reseller myself. I buy mint and proof sets, send the nicest coins in them and the good varieties off for grading at NGC and I sell them. It's how I fund my Faustina collection. And I certainly don't feel that I am unethical for doing that.
