  1. That's how I always did it when I was a Registry collector and I find it added to the experience for me. It's fun to hunt up the nicest raw coins you can find and grade them yourself. There's a real feeling of pride when your formerly raw coin comes back with a high grade on it. The skills I gained from submitting raw coins myself for my Registry Sets still serve me well in my little coin selling venture. I wouldn't be anywhere near as successful with it as I am without gaining those skills from submitting my own coins when I was a Registry collector. That era of my life was valuable and certainly served a purpose.
  2. Those Franklin Mint sets can have some nice coins in them, William. One thing I was working on a while ago was a set of Chilean 5 and 10 Pesos coins. I actually got some of those sets and got some nice coins out of there.... MS66s and MS67s. It could be worth your while to submit the nicest coins you have from them to NGC, my friend.....it could really end up paying off for you. But I'm with Bob.....I'm loving seeing you just having fun with these sets and getting back to basics!! There's something to be said for simplicity.......which is the name of the game in my collecting life now....no Registry Sets, no TPG grading.....just me, my notes and coins and my albums. But what's even better to hear is that you and Shandy are working on it together. You really can't beat that part of it. It has to be nice to be able to work on your hobby with your wife.
  3. You make some very good points, Coinbuf. I just thought I'd try....but you're probably right. The post is extremely stupid, but it doesn't violate any rules. Hopefully our responses to Researchcoins keep any newbies from buying his $300 1967 half dollar.
  4. I've gotten many a solid roll of WCDs.....and put them into Laundromat machines
  5. Hi Leroy! I think if all of the slabs are NGC and PCGS, you should have no issues. However, if you have slabs from companies other than NGC and PCGS, those may be a little problematic. If you do have coins in slabs that aren't NGC or PCGS, you may want to look into seeing if it'd be worth it to submit those coins to NGC or PCGS.
  6. I actually reported him and his $300 1967 Kennedy Half to the mods today. I'm hoping they can take that post down. Such blatant highway robbery should violate some rule here, I hope.
  7. Three words......A-MA-ZING!!! Kbbpll. I love Canadian myself, actually and I wouldn't care if that coin was cleaned either. It's spectacular and a great birthday present to yourself.
  8. The others have this one just right....it's environmental damage, a plating job and quite possibly both. Cents are subjected to all kinds of things as they go through the channels of circulation.
  9. Welp, Jimbo, I think we know Researchcoins' eBay user name now.
  10. It still is a party for some of us.....typically some of us for whom Christmas isn't a party
  11. That's a good point, Neo.....I actually hadn't thought of that. It may well play a role in the prices they achieve.
  12. Congrats, Walkerfan!! That's quite an accomplishment and it has to be a wonderful feeling! Like my good friend Hog, I'm curious about what you'll do next......any ideas on what your next project may be?
  13. For my collection, I guess you could just pick your ancient.....most ancients have been cleaned at one time or another, but this dupondius is the most obviously cleaned coin that I own. I still like it, though.
  14. Scott, I think Blake has it just right....it's a mistake. I saw your post, got curious and took a look at the Circulated Coins Only side of the U.S. Registry. I checked the Morgan Dollar set and the 20 Cents set because I know for a fact impaired proofs of the 1895 Morgan Dollar and the 1877 and 1878 20 Cents exist. I've seen impaired proofs of the 1877 and 1878 20 Cents live and in person. There are no spots for any of those coins in the the Circulated Only Morgan Dollar or the Circulated Only 20 Cents sets. This, to me, definitely backs up the theory that the inclusion of the 1974-S Silver Proof in the Ike set is a boo boo. Hopefully, someone at NGC will see your post and get that fixed up.
  15. Yeah, the Tuskegee quarter is kind of being forgotten....you're right. I wonder if it's just collector apathy regarding the ATB quarters that's doing it. Or it could be fallout from the W quarters. While many collectors enjoyed the hunt for them (I found a few myself and my dad gave me one. That one's in the permanent collection), other collectors really got p*ssed off about them. The S mint quarters, they could buy right from the U.S. Mint, but not the W's. These collectors had to wait for them to be retrieved from circulation and then for people who did retrieve them to sell them to dealers or offer them for sale themselves. The fact that they were only available through general circulation also means that those collecting these coins in super high grades couldn't get the W's in as high of grade, or if they could, they had to pay out the butt for them. While the whole W quarter thing did foster good will from some of us in the hobby, it also p*ssed a lot of collectors off and may have caused them to abandon their ATB collections. I wonder if the lack of interest in the Tuskegee quarter is the manifestation of those collectors who were alienated by the whole W quarter thing. I don't know for sure, but I definitely think it plays some kind of a role.
  16. That's pretty nuts, IMHO. These coins only came out this year and I'm certain there are many from Mint Sets that haven't been submitted yet. If a lot of 69's come out of the Mint Sets, which may happen, these prices will be unsustainable, I think. There are good, scarce modern coins. I know this...I sell them. However, I have my doubts that any of the WCDs will be among them in the long run. What I think we're seeing with these is that there are some people that just cannot wait....they just have to be first in getting anything and will pay the price to do so.
  17. Hello again, my friends! Well, I have some new goodies fresh from NGC for your consideration as well as a few things that didn't sell last time, so it's time for a new sales thread!! I'll start with NGC graded coins first, with the new stuff at the top. Also, as of 1/6/2022, I've lowered the prices on all of the NGC graded coins I have left in this thread and I'm taking offers, so if you're interested in any of these coins, this could be the time to buy or shoot an offer! First up, something unique and special for the serious Eisenhower Dollar Registry collector. This is a 1971-D Friendly Eagle Variety Eisenhower Dollar graded MS 66+. This coin is the only MS 66+ NGC has ever assigned to a Friendly Eagle and it is the second highest grade for the variety. It is only surpassed by a single Friendly Eagle in MS 67: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115136688656 I also have something unique and special for the Kennedy Half Dollar variety collector as well. This is a 1971-S FS-101 Doubled Die Obverse Kennedy Half Dollar graded PF 67 Cameo. This grade level is probably the best combination of affordability and grade for this particular coin: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115136619767 I also have a 1971-S Washington Quarter in PF 69* Cameo. The 1971-S Washington is the most difficult clad proof Washington to find with cameo contrast at all, and this one is so close to Ultra Cameo but at a fraction of the price. It's still a Registry quality piece you can be proud of and that will bring you joy while boosting your Registry score: https://www.ebay.com/itm/124918615051 I also have an NGC graded Canadian coin for your consideration. Here's a 1975 Proof Like/Uncirculated Set issue quarter graded MS 67 by NGC: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115062484650 I also have a few raw coins for your consideration. Here's a 1973-S Clad Proof Eisenhower Dollar: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115170223152 Here's a 1999-S Jefferson Nickel: https://www.ebay.com/itm/124838961824 This is a circulated East Germany 1953-E (Muldenhutten Mint) 10 Pfennig. These early East German coins with the E mintmark are quite scarce in all grades: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115080293540 Lastly, I still have some of the empty U.S. Prestige Proof Set packages from the last thread. These packages can be disassembled and reassembled, making them a unique, U.S. Mint issued packaging option for a single small cent, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar and large dollar in each package. I have some 1984 Prestige Set Packages with the boxes and all inserts here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/125015155888 And a 1987 Prestige Set Package with box and all inserts here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/125015155888 And, lastly, I have a 1984 Prestige Set Package which is only the coin holder. It doesn't have the box or the inserts: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115107048358 And that's it for now!!! I'm taking offers on pretty much everything, so don't be afraid to send them!! I also know that some of you don't want to deal with eBay. That's fine. We can complete the sale on the NGC Boards if you have a PayPal account or if you're willing to send a money order for payment. Thank you all so much for supporting my sales over the years. You've all really helped my currency and Faustina collections immensely and I appreciate it!! I appreciate you guys in general. See you on the Boards! ~Tom
  18. Hi Hog! Well, I'm no expert in colonial coins, but that coin definitely has the look of a cast counterfeit. I've seen many cast counterfeits of ancient Roman coins, and they have a similar look to your friend's coin. I'd say your suspicions are right on.
  19. Yes indeedy. That's one thing the U.S. Mint is getting very good at delivering for us. And this after Ryder is finally gone at that!! That makes it even more disappointing, sadly. I thought all of this peddling of garbage gimmicky c*ap and the other failings of Ryder's watch would go with him. Guess not
  20. Well said on all counts, Neo. I cannot think of a single thing to add. You nailed this one!
  21. Yep. I have a few on Canadian Nickel Dollars. That series has a lot of machine doubling, actually.
  22. I'm with Greg, Greenstang and Coinbuf.....definite machine doubling. It's quite interesting to look at on your coin as it's a rather dramatic example, I have to say. Though it adds no value to the coin, it's still a cool find.
  23. That's awesome to know, Alex!! I love Canadian money, coins and notes. Here in Baja Upper Canada, I do get some pretty good chances at Canadian money, too. You can find modern coins roll hunting, even Loonies sometimes. And with my bank, they'll let me buy out any Canadian bank notes that they exchange for people if I want them. But it sounds like Alaska is a treasure trove!!
