I Won an 1882-CC $5 Half Eagle

My first half eagle that is not a P or an S! I just won a PCGS XF40 1882-CC Half Eagle on eBay. The PCGS price guide price is $1600. This auction hammered at $798!!! This is worth 1028 Registry points. 51,017 minted. I am very pleased. The sniper missed as I was on it too!!!   Here is a differnt half eagle. This is also a low mintage coin. 1871-S, 25,000 minted.

RE: Some Mixed Feelings

I too have 'em! But mine are a bit different but maybe at least partly why we're into this "hobby". I too sit and watch the price of metals grow. I feel smarter than many of my friends/co-workers/family because I acted. I have been telling them for the last 3 years gold/silver are the smart hedge and a good place to park some assets. I started buying silver in the $6.25/oz price range. Gold was about $400/oz when I started buying. And platinum was $900/oz. Now, look at their prices. Go her

What a steal!

Just won a NGC MS70 2003 Gold eagle for the amazing low price of....... $94.01. The Numusmedia price is $162. I am amazed and happy at this good fortune. My max bid was $108.88 and I figured I'd lose it to the next bid of $110. But that bid never came. Wow! I wish I could say this is the last coin of the year. Not the one I bought today, but this is an NGC 2005 MS70

New Skis or another Gold coin?

Went to look at skis and no one would wait on me. Is that an omen? I went to 2 differnt sporting goods stores. I looked at several skis that fit my price range in both. Walked back and forth for 10 minutes or more. Kinda just milled araound hoping a ski salesperson would come by, but no. No employees ever came over and served me. So I ask, is that an omen that says. Don't spend money on skis when there are lots of good gold coins out there to buy.   This is one of the new gold coins from

Lost Control This Weekend, Went on a bender!

I bought 3 gold coins, 1 silver coin and a small gold bullion bar! I had been trying to slow my buying (read spending) on coins. And I had done pretty well this fall, until yesterday. I became the proud owner of an 1888-S $5 gold half eagle, an 1882-P $5 gold half eagle, 1856-O 25c and another 1994 1/10 GAE. Also, 2.5 grams of .999 gold to add to the bullion hoard. I thought all 3 gold coins were purchased at very decent prices! These will be the first additions to my $5 gold half eagle se

Touchy Raw Coin Dealers on eBay

Don't mention a raw coin they are selling is headed to either NGC or PCGS Today I emailed a dealer on eBay about an old gold coin I had my eye on advertised as BU+. Asking if the coin was in original state and if it would make it into plastic with either of the 2 top TPG's. In so many words he said no and to "stop asking idiotic questions". I deleted the coin off of my watch list immediately!

Today's Local Coin Show in Denver and new purchases

Neither are valuable coins but both deserve plastic! Went to today's local coins show here in Denver metro area. This was my first trip to a local coin show in many years. There were about 30 different sellers. I picked up a couple of raw dimes that will fill holes as placeholders for nicer examples. Pictured below are an 1899 S Barber dime and an 1856-O Seated Liberty dime. I think them worthy so they are headed in for slabbing. The picture is a bit dark but I like the rim color on the Sea

2 Slots Just Filled in my 1899 Mint Set

It had been nearly a year since I had a newly acquired coin to add to this set I finally filled 2 holes in my 1899 Mint Set. First, a nice, 1899-P $10 Liberty gold piece. Then I spied a 1899-P Barber 50c coin. Not overly shiny but rare enough that the MS62 grade still pulls in 1393 points. I am waiting to get them imaged and I will post their pics as soon as I can.

A Silver quarter in my change

Today, I noticed I had received a 1944 Washington quarter in my change. This is the first time in many moons that I received an all silver coin in change. It happens so infrequently anymore, I can't even remember the last time I found one in my change. Back when I was a kid, it was common place. I even remember some Indian Head nickels floating around. Of course I am in my 50's, so when I was a kid, silver coinage was the norm. When was the last time you found a silver coin in change?

My Point Total Changed Without Any Additions

Today my point total was adjusted..... And the total points INCREASED. I would like to know which items changed but I don't know how one finds out. Other than knowing what each coin point total was previously, I don't see any other way to know. Does anyone have any ideas?

Rank keeps changing, points don't change

Earlier today I was ranked 221, a couple hours later 211! I have been experiencing jumps in rank (both up and down) not point changes. My rank jumps 10-15 places. I see this every couple of days. Up, down, up, down, up, down. I feel like a pogo stick! This is an uncirculated 1942 Walker that ended up grading AU58. I guess all the years I had it before grading it caused it to be "circulated".

Vanquish the Dead Presidents!

As political as things get these days, let's get to symbols we can all agree on. I agree with the previous posts on this subject. More now than ever, we need ways to unite our citizenry. And images on coins can do this. Engravings of Miss Liberty, Native Americans, Eagles, Buffalo, Flag are all images that represent an America that we can again strive to achieve. Can you imagine the battles that would be ignited, if let's say, Bill Clinton was to be on a coin? Or GW Bush? Here is a photo

RE:How do you tell the grade of a coin before sending it in?

THE question of our hobby It took me a long while to understand "luster or lustre". I think I know luster when I see it but I doubt I could even describe it. I might be able to show someone luster. I know you WANT luster! Definition form a lingo web page: In numismatics, the amount and strength of light reflected from a coin?s surface or its original mint bloom. Luster is the result of light reflecting on the flow lines, whether visible or not. Now that I have found a definition of luste

Those Pandas Are Pretty Coins

Never really seen one before the photo in the last post by Clay But that Panda coin is a very nice coin. I do like the image and the face of the animal and how it's depicted. Strong contrast and strike!

I Run When I See China on eBay Auctions I avoid like the plague!

I try to avoid Chinese made products of all varieties! Being a fairly political person, I avoid Chinese made products as much as possible. So no Wal-mart shopping! My first experience with Chinese products was a Morgan CC dollar listed on eBay at an "attractive" price, When I was researching the coin I discovered that the date they were selling was never made at the CC mint in that year. I avoided a loss by research. So now, I avoid anything that says China!

Seated Liberty Dime

My 1st ever Seated Liberty coin! Never had one before but I just bought one. A 1891 MS65, Philadephia struck dime. Well struck and lots of luster. In my 1891 Mint Set. 1891SL10cO

Agreed!! Buy THE Coin!

But if you are not expert at grading coins, I would still be more wary of the other TPG's. Yes, by all means, always buy the coin not the holder. But I still feel safer in buying NGC/PCGS than any other grading company. But it is partly my inability to see the "bad" in a raw coin that makes me stick exclusively with the 2 majors and the percieved security of these 2 TPG's. It is my money and this is what I will spend it on. If I ever feel I am capable of picking a coin and knowing the pro

NOT a Growing Conflict

Adding ICG and ANACS would destroy the NGC Registry I believe there is no "growing conflict" about adding ICG and ANACS coins to the NGC Registry. I don't believe that any collector invested in top tier TPG graded coins would want this. IMHO it would cheapen the Registry. I sent Eaton Coin Man Jr. an email, asking for number of votes he tallied in his poll and there was no response. The statistics claimed are not scientific in any way and should be discounted. Bottom-line: I would probably

More TPG's

Let's see how many TPG's (used loosely) we can name. I have coins graded by: MCCS TruGrade and PCC. Are these coins what they say they are? Most likely not. Would I want a collection of coins graded by these companies? NO! These were the first "graded coins" I bought as a newbie. Fortunately I did not pay a lot. 2006Seagle

RE: All Collecting Goals Are WORTHWHILE!

Can the collector control the addictive nature of coin collecting? Yes, all collecting goals are worthwhile. But the real question is how the collector deals with the "need to buy more and better" coins. Once a collection is started, if the collector does not lose interest, what does the collector do when the set is completed? Finish a set then stop? No, I would be willing to bet a nice coin from my collection, that a high % of collectors will move on to other sets and coin types. Then anot
