My First $3 Gold Coin

Fits my Gold Type Set and 1856 Mint Set Today my first $3 gold piece arrived. It is graded AU53 and is a rather nice coin. Minimal marks and wear! Lots of lustre remains! It has a larger diameter than what I was expecting, given the size of a quarter eagle. 26,010 minted. Better images are in the sets

My Newest Acquisition- My First Classic Head Gold

An 1836 -script 8 Quarter Eagle Today I recieved the below coin. It's an 1836 -script 8 variety graded by NGC XF45. It's my first ever Classic Head Gold coin. Under the loupe, it is rather marked up. But for XF45, this is not unacceptable. The reverse is better than the obverse. 547,986 minted and of that number, it is unknown how many were -script 8 vs. Block 8. Of course, the images in the gallery are far better than the one below.

My "New" 1869 Quarter Eagle Has Landed!

This coin has the fewest coins minted of all the old coins I have. According to the Red Book, 4,320 of these were made in Philly in 1869. My example has a ding on the 9, see it below! Or a bigger image in my set gallery.

I Made a Purchase from David Lawrence RC today, the first time in a long time.

I bought an 1869 Liberty Quarter Eagle, the second coin purchse of the new year. Funny thing.... The first coin of the new year was an 1869 S Liberty Quarter Eagle. I was not shopping for 1869 but had some money to spend and that's what I found. The 1869 S has a low mintage of 29,500. And the 1869 has an incredibly low mintage of 4,320! This is the 1869 S PCGS AU53.

New Photoshop Software!!

I was able to get it from our server from work. Now comes the hard part...... I just found out the other day that our server at work has Adobe Photoshop CS3 available for downloading. So I VPN'ed into the server from work and downlaoded the software. I do need to find out the key, usually we buy a multi-user license, which is why I can download it. There may be an opportunity to work on some graphic design for work as a committee member so I thought I'd grab it. And I can use it for my coins!!

After Buying this coin, I never thought I'd actually have it in my hands!

A fairly rare, 1856 S Liberty Quarter Eagle, turned up missing at the sellers!! I bought this coin on eBay December 20. It was a BIN. I thought the coin to be well priced and it fits a couple of different sets. It's worth 1886 Registry points too! Well, the day after I bought and paid for it. The seller emailed me saying he can't find it anywhere after an exhaustive search. I was thinking he realized he could have sold it for more and was pulling a fast one. He contacted the dealer he got i

Did I meet my 2009 Goals?

Some goals yes, some goals no! but I did have the best of intentions!!!In my final journal entry of 2008, I stated the below set of goals for 2009."Goals for 2009 include:1) Work on completing my American gold Eagle 1/4 oz sets2) Add new coins to my 1891 Mint Set3) Add more coins to my Gold Half Eagle sets.4) Add more coins to my Gold Buffalo sets"Some of these goals are met and will continue to be a goal for 2010. Those old and new carry-over goals are:1) Add new coins to my 1891 Mint Set2) Ad

Finally, I sold my last Proof Sacagawea Dollar

Each had the opening bid set to $9.99, some had BIN for $11.95 too. So far, with one remaining auction still open, with a $9.99 opening bid, only one sold for more than $9.99. In fact, most didn't sell until the last moments of the auction. Some didn't get a single bid and had to be relisted. The 2000 S had to be listed 3 times to sell. So, between the Lewis and Clark Commeorative Jefferson Proof Nickels and the Sacagawea, I spent more to buy each one than I was able to sell them for. My bad

My Gold Type Set is Filling In

Set has 21 coins, I have 10 of 'em filled. Since I had a start on the gold type set, I decided to go ahead and start the set about 3 months ago. Since I added the on hand coins to the set, I have purchased several that fit into the type set and that fit into other sets. I have purchased 2 (the $5 & $10 Indian's) that only fit into this set of mine. This is my 1856 Double Eagle XF40

The Registry gives 17296 points for a coin graded VF!

What coin could it be? It's the 1854-S Half Eagle. This issue is the first year of San Franciso gold coins from the US Mint there. It has a mintage, according to the Red Book, of 268. And states "3 Known". NGC has graded 1. It was AU58. PCGS has graded NONE! This is no 1854-S Half eagle but a Nice one anyway.

Regisrty Points vs. $$$ Paid

My newest Half Eagle acquisition is my biggest point getter, but not even close to the cost of my Charlotte Half Eagle My Charlotte Half Eagle, in XF condition, gets 2048 Registry points and cost about $2400. My new Half Eagle, in AU condition, gets 2401 Registry points and cost $1000 less than the Charlotte Half Eagle. And I paid a premium for that coin, an 1857 S AU50. I guess I'll never understand the algorithm that assigns Registry points. This is another of my recently re-imaged Ha

My latest acquisition

A MS62 1880 Eagle $10, The first addition to my 1880 Mint Set since I started it with my on hand coins. This is the first addition to the 1880 Mint Set since I started the set a couple years ago (probably not that long ago). Since I am pretty much buying old gold exculsively, I came across this decent example for reasonable $$$ and bought it. PCGS MS62 1880 Eagle

All this photo talk has me re-imaging my Half Eagles

I have about 20% imaged with my newer camera. Since everyone has been talking about taking pictures of coins, I too, got the fire lit to do some of the backlog of re-imaging my older images. I have done my 1840's coins and have only 1855 left of the 1850's that I own left to do in that decade. Also a number of half eagles have been purchased since the new camera was acquired. So anyway, take a look, they have turned out pretty well. Here is a sample of one of the new images.

Modern Coins Don't Sell

Priced at $.99 to start the auction, no bids for a graded proof Return to Monticello nickel! As many that read my Journals may know, I am in the process of re-focusing my collection. So I am selling all of my modern coins. I am re-investing the proceeds in Old Gold COins. I have been trying to sell my graded proof nickels and Sacagawea's. Selling as auctions, low opening prices and I am unable to get any bids. So I caution anyone out there that thinks they are growing their investment with

A Josh McDaniels Coin?

The rookie head coach has the Denver Broncos 5-0. Unprecedented in NFL history. No rookie head coach has ever won their first 5 games as a head coach. When he was hired: he cleaned house, got rid of Crybaby Cutler and started from scratch. Local sportscasters said he was either a genius or a fool. So I think it is appropriate for a Josh McDaniels commemorative coin! Here is an image of Plkes Peak in the fall.

Unseached Silver Quarter and Half "Hoard" and 2 Gold Coins

Well, I'm really not sure how much there is, but it will be mine! My father had a family Pharmacy when I was a kid. After 1964, he would always pull out any silver coins from the till and bring them home. I don't know what is left (my father died in 1982 and my mother has had possession of the coins since). I do expect rolls of quarters and halfs. And 2 Gold Coins- I haven't seen the gold coins since the early 1970's, so I have no clue (memory) as to what they are. I think they are double eagl

Made a "Mint" on My Buffalo Gold

I had purchased 6 of them but now...... all of them have been sold or are all but sold (auctions end tomorrow night) and they have been VERY profitable. I will clear over $1400 net profit for the 6 coins. They were: NGC PF69UC 1/10 oz NGC MS70 1/10 oz PCGS MS70 FS 1 oz PCGS MS69 1/2 oz PCGS MS70 1/4 oz PCGS MS70 FS 1/10 I bought the 1/4 and 1/2 oz coins from the Mint (I included the Mint box and COA for them and that increased the bids) and the others on eBay for reasonable mon

Just added my Charlotte Half Eagle!

Finally! I did it. I hit the BIN button and purchased my first Charlotte minted coin. My $219 Gold 1/4 oz MS70 Buffalo sold for over $800 last night which was amazing to me. It is a nice coin and I included the orginal Mint packaging, but still. Nearly 4 times my purchase price. So that helped raise the cash nicely for the half eagle. Here is a picture from the eBay ad. When it arrives, I'm sure I will post a better image.

Prices Realized Have Been Decent on eBay

I am doing well despite the fees! I have been selling for a month now on eBay. Mostly graded bullion coins and some vintage silver bars. My results are surprisingly good. Right now I am showing a 25% profit after all fees, shipping etc are deducted. Of course it helps that I was buying when prices were much less than they are currently. While my goal is to buy that 1856-C Half Eagle "next", I have been snagging a couple Liberty Quarter Eagles along the way. All with the proceeds of my eBay

First Pictures with My New Camera

This coin came in today! As did the camera! Well, this camera is a bit different than the camera I broke, so I had to do some experimentation to get the pictures right. Below is the result of my adjustments! It is my latest purchase. 1854 Quarter Eagle XF45
