Good God, man, that's a handsome grouping of shooting medals. I haven't purchased a coin in perhaps a month or so. Thank heavens that NYINC is almost here. I've built up a modest war chest, so I can't wait!

So while I am not winning on Heritage's auctions, I am doing better with my raw shooting medal purchases. A few rare ones in this lot.

I have wanted this Schutzenfest medal for years and while money is tight these days I jumped on it.

1909 Basel Shooting Medal

R-132c 29mm Silver

NGC MS63

Hans Frei at his best!

If you own the Richter catalog you will find that R-132, 133 and 134 form a very nice Hans Frei set.

Now that I have the 132 I only need the R-134.

Maybe Zohar has one...

A post I made elsewhere in the summer of 2008...check the last line!

A beautiful 1911 Basel (R-133) from a Swiss dealer.

Worth about $40 in VF and $120 in UNC.

Hans Frei designed this medal as well as the beautiful R132 (1909 Basel) and the R134 (1914 Sissach)

If it takes a lifetime I will own an R132.

Both are very nice. How many of the Holy Freres medals do you have thus far?

Quite a few, but still not enough.

Here is a very rare (RR with 80 minted) Hans Frei that I bought yesterday instead of going to the NYINC show...

I'll try and post better photos of these coins though I admit that I am quite satisfied with the seller's photos. Whoever is handling the photography chores at Northeast Numismatics obviously knows what they are doing.

For me, this coin has one of the most beautiful reverses.

I was at a local table top show today and came across it. It doesn't fit into my collecting themes but I just had to buy it.

Italy 1917 2 lire

Thanks Z.

"Absolutely gorgeous reverse on that 2-Lire, what is the composition?"

10 grams of 0.835 silver

To be honest they aren't that rare or valuable, but I just really like the design. There are some other very nice reverses of different denominations for Italian coins of the early 20th century.

This reverse was minted from 1914-17. The 1908-12 is a similar reverse.

Wow, I am surprised at how large this coin was! That is over a quarter of an ounce, bigger than a sovereign, or French/Swiss 20F or even a half eagle! That would put the exchange at nearly $3 per Lira, which just seems incredible given that the last time I was in Italy a dollar bought 1,600 lira!

Yep its a nice size. If you want larger still, there was a 5 lire one struck in 1914. That ones 0.900 silver and 25 grams, however a decent one will set you back $10,000+

You possibly can buy a decent 2 lire one from $60+. The 1917 is the better year.

Oh so it's silver! From the photos it looked more gold, and since I just got an Austrian gold coin today, I had that on the brain! If it's silver that makes a whole lot more sense then! I will definitely look for the 2 lira since I don't have an extra $10K lying around!
