You have a Mercury dime minted at the San Franisco mint. The S mint on the reverse at to the right of the one indicates the mint of manufacture. The Mercury dime is very popular with collectors. There may be a slight premium over silver melt value to a collector of circulated coins, but I think it is probably better as a keepsake as the value is of no meaningful significance.
-
Thinking back, I could never provide pictures of the cellophane after cutting up a mint set. I never kept it! The coin in question is a proof. No doubt about it. Do TPG's make mistakes? Yes they do. Quite a few are clerical in nature dealing with incorrect dates and or mint marks. I just read a thread across the street however where PCGS graded a proof gold coin as MS I believe more than once. The submitter then sent it to NGC who graded as a proof coin. I guess it made a significant difference in value. In that thread I believe the confusion was because the coin in question was a matte proof.

Even though Im the one paying for them I still consider it mine and his set. I labeled it with both our names in the registry. And they will go to him anyways. We are going for a full set of business strikes, all in MS. Using the registry as a guide for them to. I dont really call ours competing in the registry. More like displaying in the registry. We dont have a chance in the world of ever getting close to the top 10 but we still like to show them amongst some of the finest collections in the world. Ive seen some pretty impressive coins looking through others sets on there. We are trying to pick some lusterous coins. Trying for FBL when we can but got a few coins without them such as those dreaded S mint marks. We got a couple beauties that are not FBL. My son likes those rim toners. Hes got a good eye for them. He picked the last few we got out. Ive truly fell in love with the Franklin halves and have a deeper appriceation for them. What a great denomination to show such a great man on. Its been an honor spending quality time together with him on this father/son set. This set will be prized above the rest for that reason.
Post a link to your set? I would like a look see if I may.

It’s started with Mercury dimes but all of a sudden I found beauty in our Buffalo nickels when I was very young, I think I was 11 years old, I am 72 years old now. My father got me into collecting coins when I was a Cub Scout as I needed a hobby to earn a badge. He was a coin collector too. I never, ever thought it would stay with me my entire life. So, I mainly collect buffalo nickels as it still is my passion and I still add to my collection. My coin collection that spans decades has widened out quite a bit. I like gold coins too.
Happy hunting to all😊
You have shown me some of your buffalos and they are of the realm that I can only dream of!

I got started in the 6th grade in earnest in the mid 1960’s. My teacher, Mr. Bliss was an avid collector and had a complete set of Lincoln Pennie’s including the 1909-SVDB! I initially started with Jefferson Nickels and Roosevelt dimes. Over time I got into collecting ANACS slabbed coins and eventually into NGC slabbed Roosevelt Dimes!
I now have expanded my collection into quite a few series including Jefferson Nickels, Roosevelt Dimes, Franklin Half dollars, Kennedy Half dollars and Peace and Morgan dollars. My best sets by far are my silver Roosevelt Dime set which includes several MS68 specimens as well as my Franklin non FBL set which is ranked number 1 right now.
Here recently I have gotten into the custom sets. I currently have 3 including a toned coin set, an artificially and/or altered color set and last but not least, my Appalachian Hoard Jefferson Nickel set.
I have always collected the coin and not the holder and have a big mix of both NGC and PCGS slabbed coins. I like the registry as a tool to keep my collection organized as well as the ability to look at my sets digitally. I do use both registries as I think they both have some advantages over the other.
Happy posting! I think this is a great opportunity for some positive posting for a change!

You may want to contact 6MileRick on here. I think he had a set for sale or at least quite a few he was offering up for sale.
Good luck!

Hello I am hoping to add a complete set to the registry under Custom I think. I have all the NGC silver Roosevelts from 1946-1964 all are MS66 and PR68* and +. What place do I create the set? Any help I am a newbie to NGC. Thanks
Building a custom set is fun as you can decide what your set is and can include all your coins in the same set! It is not too bad once you get the hang of it. As for the registry, there several options for the Roosevelts. There is a 1946 - 1964 silver set as well as a 1950-1964 silver proof set. In addition there is a complete set from 1946 to date for MS coins; a 1950 to date for PF coins and last but not least a 1992 to date silver proof set! Not to mention additional sets that include varieties! I probably forgot about some other set options I'm sure!
Welcome to the registry and have fun!

I like the Jeffersons in MS66. As JP said, take the FS when you find them with a good price. I just finished the 1938-1964 set except for the 40 reverses. A long and fun set and I look forward to the remainder!
JP - you have an awesome set!

When Anderson Press sold ANACS in Dec 2007, it was sold to James Taylor of Driving Force LLC. He relocated it to Colorado. Today the ownership is listed as EKW LLC. Is this just a new name for Driving Force or is there a new ownership of ANACS with Taylor out of the picture? Can't seem to find anything on this.
ANACS moved from Columbus, Ohio some time in the 70"s I think. As far as I know they have in in Colorado since 1976. Not sure who EKW LLC is, but sounds more like a holding company than anything.

I have had coins regraded several times. Coins in older holders before designations such FB, FBL, FT and FS to name a few. I am also of the opinion that quite a few of the old holder coins were graded much more conservatively than they are today. I have also submitted quite a few as crossovers as well.
I personally am of the belief that graders are not experts in all series of coins that they grade. I know several collectors, including myself, that will wait for some times up to a year in hopes of getting a different grader. I have also seen it pay off handsomely for some.

Very nice indeed!

It definitely opens up a lot of questions. I think this could be good, although he kind of hints that higher end coins will be their main customer base.
I would say they already are as they do not certify all coin series now.

As promised, here is my update: https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/6484899-001/67/
I saw it was in quality control/finalizing status this morning and have been checking every couple minutes since. Just got the good news a couple minutes ago. Obviously I am extremely happy the regrade went the way I believed it should. Even though this coin now correctly having the “5FS” designation assigned to it greatly increases it’s value, I am not going to sell it. It truly is a beautiful coin and it will be passed along to my future children.
Major congratulations! That is one sweet nickel! I still think it is * material!
-
I believe this should be posted in the newbie question rather than the marketplace.
-
You have a very beautiful nickel, but I do not think it is full steps. I do think the luster and overall appearance and strike would obtain the * before 5FS.
Good luck!

I know, RIGHT!!!! I simply do not understand why people do that other than not having a clue that certain dates were silver. I would think that common sense would factor in and tell one that even melt value of silver coinage is more than face value (and not to mention varieties which I cannot hold that against a non-collector of course). Oh well..... I don't take advantage of anyone, but at the same time, some folks lack of knowledge benefits those of us that are knowledgable on coins.
P.S.- I was just trying to throw in some humor with my roll of penny comment. I do own a few very nice coins (none in the $thousands though). One of them came from our beloved @Coinbuf and also @Woods020 right here on the forum. Thanks guys for your generosity in allowing me to purchase these from of you!!
I think the biggest haul I got from her bank was about 10 rolls of Franklins all B U. An elderly couple brought them in and just wanted the bills. My wife told them they were worth much more than face value but were just not interested!

@Simple Collector I don't have a budget like the rest of you guys do, major kudos for your extremely nice acquisitions, I'm sure those are some stunning coins!!
For me, the most I've ever spent is .50 cents. Yes, that's correct (albeit not a single coin though, sorry). That was on an extremely nice bank wrapped roll of pennies, but I keep having to return them due to needing the funds.
My wife used to work at a bank and that is where I got quite a bit of silver coins! I was also able to get uncut sheets of bills as well. I found it astonishing that people would bring in rolls of silver coins and cash them in for bills. I also ended up with quite a few silver certificates.

Any reason you needed that information ? Mailing some or trying to put them in a holder ?
No. I purchased one for the first time in the GSA holder and based on pictures, they look quite bigger thasn an NGC holder.

Just curious what is the most you have spent on a coin? I know all have different budgets and collecting interests, but what say you? Mine is currently $1,800. on a Roosevelt Dime.

I saw no encouragement given about learning about coins in that post, at least not as worded. I believe you have to join NGC in order to post and D.E was a 2 hour old member. Not every one wants to learn about coins in depth. I think it was curiosity more than anything trying to find out about something they saw as odd.
