@D.E -- These are both mutilated coins that were damaged by a coin counter or other machinery. This occurs with some frequency. The 1963-D, which you just posted on this old thread, contains approximately $1.50 worth of silver at the current price of silver, which changes daily. I'm sorry that you took offense at @Greenstang's efforts to encourage you to learn about coins, which can be a very fulfilling endeavor.

I saw no encouragement given about learning about coins in that post, at least not as worded. I believe you have to join NGC in order to post and D.E was a 2 hour old member. Not every one wants to learn about coins in depth. I think it was curiosity more than anything trying to find out about something they saw as odd.

  2. You have a Mercury dime minted at the San Franisco mint. The S mint on the reverse at to the right of the one indicates the mint of manufacture. The Mercury dime is very popular with collectors. There may be a slight premium over silver melt value to a collector of circulated coins, but I think it is probably better as a keepsake as the value is of no meaningful significance.

  3. Thinking back, I could never provide pictures of the cellophane after cutting up a mint set. I never kept it! The coin in question is a proof. No doubt about it. Do TPG's make mistakes? Yes they do. Quite a few are clerical in nature dealing with incorrect dates and or mint marks. I just read a thread across the street however where PCGS graded a proof gold coin as MS I believe more than once. The submitter then sent it to NGC who graded as a proof coin. I guess it made a significant difference in value. In that thread I believe the confusion was because the coin in question was a matte proof.

Hello I am hoping to add a complete set to the registry under Custom I think. I have all the NGC silver Roosevelts from 1946-1964 all are MS66 and PR68* and +. What place do I create the set? Any help I am a newbie to NGC. Thanks

Building a custom set is fun as you can decide what your set is and can include all your coins in the same set! It is not too bad once you get the hang of it. As for the registry, there several options for the Roosevelts. There is a 1946 - 1964 silver set as well as a 1950-1964 silver proof set. In addition there is a complete set from 1946 to date for MS coins; a 1950 to date for PF coins and last but not least a 1992 to date silver proof set! Not to mention additional sets that include varieties! I probably forgot about some other set options I'm sure!

Welcome to the registry and have fun!

When Anderson Press sold ANACS in Dec 2007, it was sold to James Taylor of Driving Force LLC. He relocated it to Colorado. Today the ownership is listed as EKW LLC. Is this just a new name for Driving Force or is there a new ownership of ANACS with Taylor out of the picture? Can't seem to find anything on this.

ANACS moved from Columbus, Ohio some time in the 70"s I think. As far as I know they have in in Colorado since 1976. Not sure who EKW LLC is, but sounds more like a holding company than anything.

  6. I have had coins regraded several times. Coins in older holders before designations such FB, FBL, FT and FS to name a few. I am also of the opinion that quite a few of the old holder coins were graded much more conservatively than they are today. I have also submitted quite a few as crossovers as well.

I personally am of the belief that graders are not experts in all series of coins that they grade. I know several collectors, including myself, that will wait for some times up to a year in hopes of getting a different grader. I have also seen it pay off handsomely for some.

As promised, here is my update: https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/6484899-001/67/

I saw it was in quality control/finalizing status this morning and have been checking every couple minutes since. Just got the good news a couple minutes ago. Obviously I am extremely happy the regrade went the way I believed it should. Even though this coin now correctly having the “5FS” designation assigned to it greatly increases it’s value, I am not going to sell it. It truly is a beautiful coin and it will be passed along to my future children.

Major congratulations! That is one sweet nickel! I still think it is * material!

I know, RIGHT!!!! I simply do not understand why people do that other than not having a clue that certain dates were silver.  I would think that common sense would factor in and tell one that even melt value of silver coinage is more than face value (and not to mention varieties which I cannot hold that against a non-collector of course).  Oh well..... I don't take advantage of anyone, but at the same time, some folks lack of knowledge benefits those of us that are knowledgable on coins.

P.S.- I was just trying to throw in some humor with my roll of penny comment.  I do own a few very nice coins (none in the $thousands though).  One of them came from our beloved @Coinbuf and also @Woods020 right here on the forum.  Thanks guys for your generosity in allowing me to purchase these from of you!!

I think the biggest haul I got from her bank was about 10 rolls of Franklins all B U. An elderly couple brought them in and just wanted the bills. My wife told them they were worth much more than face value but were just not interested!

@Simple Collector I don't have a budget like the rest of you guys do, major kudos for your extremely nice acquisitions, I'm sure those are some stunning coins!!

For me, the most I've ever spent is .50 cents. Yes, that's correct (albeit not a single coin though, sorry). That was on an extremely nice bank wrapped roll of pennies, but I keep having to return them due to needing the funds.

My wife used to work at a bank and that is where I got quite a bit of silver coins! I was also able to get uncut sheets of bills as well. I found it astonishing that people would bring in rolls of silver coins and cash them in for bills. I also ended up with quite a few silver certificates.
