Thanks for sharing your passion AND the history lesson

I adhere to dollar cost averaging to help me decide on a purchase. I have bought gold coins ranging from $400 to $1800 an ounce both going up and going down. For the most part I try to find the best price available and then buy. Sometimes tho, I bite the bullet because it is a rarer coin or one that doesn't show up very often. Or, it will complete a set:) The hardest thing for me tho is finding coins in NGC coffins because completing a set with a pcgs coin will not complete the set on my records here I hate that, but it is part of an OCD thing I guess. I have been finding more coins on Great Collections that have been cheaper plus there is no sales tax and with a higher price coin that adds up quick. Happy hunting

I am sorry to hear about your wife. That is a tough one. Keeping busy seems to be one of things that keeps us going and dealing with the pain. I haven't been on much this year but did notice you hadn't been posting much. I thought it was one of the those phases we all go through. I only met you once in Asheville but you treated me fairly when you sold some coins for me and I always appreciated it. Hang in there buddy things will get better. There will always be a hole in your heart where your wife used to be but it will grow smaller. Take care of yourself and your son. Best wishes Ron

Never a dull moment with young'uns They are funny and precious moments later but in the present is another story. I was painting the bathroom when I got a phone call. I answered and it was an old friend. We chatted about 10 minutes and I hung up. I walked into the bathroom and found my son, maybe 3, had painted the shower door, toilet, door, and the floor to help daddy. We laugh about it now some 30 years later but oh my I was not happy.

I like the lines and layout of those coins. No dead people memorialized just clean simple design. Especially the 1929. Nice pick ups. Wait until you can't buy the coin/s before you have to sell others. Then it gets real

I identify completely with your procrastinations. It takes me forever to get a submission ready for NGC or to send off to great collections. It is even longer for eBay postings since they are so much smaller, dollar wise, and require even more effort for the return. Rainy days like today help me to play catch up on these "onerous" chores Keep having fun and experimenting. It is what makes life more interesting. Great pics and tutorial by the way.

I use a bench vise as well. I wrap the slab in a rag and lay the slab horizontally in the vise. I tighten it until I hear a crack. Then I slowly crank it another notcher two and after 2 oe 3 tightening nudges it cracks open like an egg:) Just don't do it quickly if you don't want a mess;)

Nice pick up and even better patience

Well, I got distracted last night and didn't check the auction until it was over. I had put in a bid of $152 and figured I would get notified when I was outbid. I just missed it and it went for $157 Dang it I just checked and I was sniped with 20 seconds remaining in the auction. Good prediction Jackson, I just blew it.

Jackson, Thanks for the heads up. That is one amazingly toned dime. I will check it out.

Here is the link https://www.ebay.com/itm/1941-D-10C-Mercury-Dime-PCGS-MS67-FB-CAC-2255-27/264534577545 His asking price is $31 less than NGC price guide.

We would need more details about the listing to chuckle
If it was an auction style listing the starting bid price is the reserve the best offer is used to try to settle before the bidding starts which may drive the price much higher then the opening bid
If the listing was a fixed price then yes it signals they are willing to negotiate
My bad, it was a buy it now or best offer. I just can't imagine the logic of dropping the price 61 cents. This guy is a big time dealer and I figured he would be willing to wheel and deal a bit. What a shock to me when he responded with his counter. I wished him best of luck without my usual sarcasm and just thought I would share my experience here.

I am always amazed at the different varieties of coins. What is more amazing to me is that someone "discovered" these subtle changes in the coin. My attention to detail is so awful that early on in my collecting I knew I needed to get graded coins instead of raw. After my tenth coin returned as altered, improperly cleaned, or detailsI realized that my "eye" really was not good at the grading game. I will still submit some coins just for fun but more expensive coins are a no no. Less stress for me:) I am not certain I would have ever seen the different number of stars when I looked at your two coins Well done

Nice coin. I am unfamiliar with WINGS. Is that a new CAC wannabe?
-
I believe it makes a coin easier to sell when the time comes. Sort of like an insurance policy.

You are saving money by being a year behind the issue. I collect modern commemoratives and find that their price drops after the initial excitement has subsided. How great is it to have a helper with your collecting? Keep up the good work.

Nicely done. Smooth flow and good photography plus historical information made this very interesting. Good Job

what a great idea. well done

Hi Bill. It is great seeing you post again I am ambivalent leaning towards happy that NGC reversed their decision about PCGS coins in the registry. I was upset when they initially eliminated PCGS coins from the registry as that left me high and dry in every one of my collections. I will now complete two collections because I have PCGS coins that I couldn't enter before and that is a very satisfying feeling to me. As to value increase or decrease I am not certain how that will effect coin values, if at all.

My most recent NGC submission - it only took me 3 months to mail it off...

The history in that submission is really quite staggering. The fact that there are survivors after 200 years in such excellent condition WITH shells is impressive. What a terrific submission and preservation project. Well done
