Over the weekend I got a package with 4 of the Yale coins. Back in December I finished picking up the rest of the Falcons that I needed. So that gives me all of the coins I need for the first 6 issues and 2/3rd of the total I need for the 7th issue – so I’m almost 70% of the way there now and I’m only about 1-ish issue behind.

After thoroughly failing to keep up with the statehood quarters and the presidential dollars as they were coming out I’d like to actually be able to say that I finished one of these multi-year modern issue series that I start collecting with all the best intentions.

Part of the problem with this set is that my goal ballooned early on from finishing 2 sets, to three, and then 5 – with a 6th to be given away gradually to my stepfather. I let the scope explode on me a bit and the fact that these coins each have 2 ounces of silver make them not the cheapest modern issues to buy – but they’re cheaper than gold issues. Of course, the fact that I’m also giving them to my stepfather and don’t want to leave him hanging with an incomplete set has also been helping to drive and encourage me to keep going with this. So, there’s a positive side to it too I suppose.

Now I’m going to need more air-tite capsules before continuing though. 😊

While I was setting up to take this picture my son, Ben, came up the stairs and saw what I was doing. The immediate response was "Woah! That's a lot of coins! What are these? Can I help you, Daddy? How many coins is this? Can I count them, Daddy?"

How do you say "no" to that? You can also see the Buffalo nickel's slab, which was also out for pictures.

You are saving money by being a year behind the issue. I collect modern commemoratives and find that their price drops after the initial excitement has subsided. How great is it to have a helper with your collecting? :) Keep up the good work.

These things have an unlimited mintage and they're sold as bullion issues through the bullion dealers mostly. Because of this they don't go down after initial hype but they don't go up much either. You can get the 2020 issues for about $42, the 2019 issues for about $43-44. The 2016 and 2017 issues are more like $50-65 now.

Agreed.. I have a Sacagawea proof set-- I always run a year or more behind but then remember I have them and often- with patience- even get the PF69DCAM date I need for around $10.

Rev-- I also have a set of these 2 oz coins. Since I only buy 1 each and keep them raw, I usually get them when released ( the 2020 White Lion coin was purchased a few months ago.) I actually saw the opposite happen with this series though, as the Falcon and a few other Beasts actually kept getting higher in price as time passed.

Looking at JMBullion ("Starting from" price):

2016 Lion of England: $54.38

2017 Griffin: $86.38 (Out of Stock)

2017 Dragon: $53.38

2018 Unicorn: $55.38

2018 Bull: $46.38

2019 Falcon: $42.38

2019 Yale: $41.98

2020 White Lion: $41.38

So it's definitely not monotonically increasing with age; but I'd say the overall trend is that the older ones cost more and, of course, once any of them go out of stock at the dealers, bets are off.

I could check other dealers for other data points but I'm feeling too lazy for that. lol 

So far, while I usually don't get the lowest prices, I've been staying up to date enough that I haven't gotten hit by any major price increases for shopping for "old" issues.
