Typically it is 38 to 64, but I wouldn’t call it a short set by any means. I guess you could stop wherever you like. The easiest short set would be the war nickels. Some of the 50s and 60s coins are going to be tough to nearly impossible to find in FS.

You can haggle with my son when I draw my last. I have all kindsa stuff in the “extra holes” of my 1938-2005 Jefferson Dansco album. Can you believe the 2006 - date is already on Page 2. Time’s fun when you’re having flies.
My Dansco page 6 in the first volume goes to 2011.

That's a tough one. You see the condition of those nickels i have coming in. Be very hard for me to tell. The 40 is the more rare? But it's easier to spot?
It will be very difficult to tell on well worn examples. Like @VKurtB stated above, 39P Rev of 38 is less common than the 40. The opposite holds true for the 39S and the Denver coins are about equal.

The 39 S/R 40 is one of my happy coins.
I remember when you picked that one up. I was quite jealous.

Holy mackerel. That's the only way to tell, on an 80 year old nickel? Not happening in the wild, sorry friends. But thank you for the tip @The Neophyte Numismatist, always appreciated.
As far as I know this is the only way to tell the difference in reverses. If there is another diagnostic, I would certainly like to know what it is.

Thank you for the education. I had no idea either had a ddo. Both Philadelphia mint?
There is also a QDR (Quadrupled Die Reverse) for the 39P but it isn’t as popular or desirable as the DDR. In my opinion the 39 S REV OF 40 is one of the true key date coins in the series. You just don’t see them very often. I’m still searching for that one.

Hey Lem. Thank you for the nice comment. I can see what looks like possible extra thickness in IGWT, but as QA said, it could very well just be some flattening from circulation. Just too difficult to make a call based on the pictures. The mint mark placement appears to be very close in its placement and orientation (maybe a bit low though) for the variety you mentioned, but still too difficult of call to make. Regardless, that is one nice find in the wild!!
Thanks for taking a look. The only reason I said that was because I have a 40S DDO and it looks similar to this one. Particularly the thick “In god we trust” and date.

Hello. I see nothing to indicate any errors on this coin. This nickel has seen heavy circulation and has accrued a few bumps and bruises along the way. The voids on the obverse could suggest this coin was plucked from the ground at some point, cleaned up and put back into circulation or took some heavy shots in that area. The mintmark looks to have taken a hit and displaced the metal. This coin lived a hard life and what exactly happened to it is hard to say. Everything you see is most likely PMD (Post Mint Damage). No value over face.

(VARIETY VISTA) I could be wrong, but there is no harm in giving it a quick check. Nice looking for a roll find. Where is @GBrad when you need him?

The question is how many mark free ones there are. I bought a few solid rolls and they were quite “baggy”, worse than surrounding years. Maybe they had a drunken party in Puerto Rico before I got them. Rum can getcha.
Doesn’t look like 2008 nickels did well either. Particularly Denver coins.

This tells me people submit really nice coins for the most part. Kinda the opposite of newbies here with questions.
I don’t believe I saw anything over a grade of 66.
Edit - NGC shows 1 09P in a 67 6FS.
-
NGC pops / all grades
2009 P - 212 6FS / 10 5FS / 10 no steps
2009 D - 217 6FS / 26 5FS / 16 no steps
PCGS pops / all grades
2009 P - 400 FS / 3 no FS
2009 D - 248 FS / 6 no FS

I recall having read that a very high percentage of 2009 nickels went into the banking systems of non-state territories and possessions, aka Puerto Rico and Guam, etc.
Do you believe this happened with the 09 dimes as well?

I would say the 2009 P in my area. I have found one 2009 D and have never found a 39 from any mint in circulation. New stuff in my neck of the woods is all from Denver.

Hey, what happened to the eagle's tail feathers?
They do look a bit weak. Don’t have this in hand yet, so I can’t say for sure if it is from the lighting in the pics or if they just didn’t strike up well. We shall see.

Your coin has been counterstamped after it left the mint. Like JP said, it was done with a punch or press of some sort. It is not a mint error and is considered damaged. Value of 1 cent.
