VKurtB got a reaction from CherryO in Charlie Duke Signed Coins
I was only aware of the Apollo 11 coins being signed. Charlie Duke was the CAPCOM for the landing. It is his voice that said, "Roger, Twank...Tranquility, we copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot!"

VKurtB got a reaction from tj96 in FS (Fivaz & Stanton) #s On NGC Labels
It depends on what nomenclature the original submitter requested. You are likely to get as FS number if an academic submitter was the original. If a slick marketer submitted it, it has a cutesy pie name. NGC had made clear that they do not support all variety designations of ANY source.

VKurtB got a reaction from ThePhiladelphiaPenny in A question on coin grading.
Amen! This is particularly true of discerning the higher grades, say in the AU into the MS grades. Not everything that looks like wear IS wear.

VKurtB reacted to RWB in Slabbed coin or Original Mint Package?
Each time a modern imitation coin, proof, or other novelty is removed from its original packaging, you expose its surface to contamination. The effects are cumulative each time a holder is opened, and increase as unprotected time increases. The effects might not become visible for a year or more.
You can be smart, and leave it in the original plastic capsule, or take your chances after spending $50.

VKurtB got a reaction from GoldFinger1969 in Of the 333 million presumably alive and well and residing in the United States today, how many are "coin collectors?"
Sure. There are approximately 27,000 current dues paid members. The high water mark was pre-Amos ANACS, when you had to be an ANA member to submit coins to ANACS.

VKurtB reacted to Just Bob in Ancients or Vault Protectors... Which is a better buy?
You can continue to play devil's advocate or "defender of the downtrodden" all you like, but, rest assured, the majority of the members of this forum strongly disapprove of this guy's tactics, especially since he's been repeatedly called out, and continues to do it. It isn't "harmless conduct." It's the forum equivalent of spam phone calls and junk mail, and we don't like it.

VKurtB got a reaction from Fenntucky Mike in ANA Summer Seminar Scholarship Received
I have been awarded a Robert Lecce Scholarship (partial, tuition only) for the Summer Seminar this coming June. The value is $770. Because of the “extras” I ordered, including 3 extra nights room and board, to catch events between the two main weeks, I am spending a similar amount. The Robert Lecce is the only one offered by the ANA to adults of any financial status. The application was almost as daunting as a college application, complete with the essay.
I wanted class #31 - A Survey of 20th and 21st Century World Coins, but that only has two sign ups, so I will most likely be in:
#34 - A History of U.S. Colonial Coins, Currency, and Medals, taught by Dr. Jesse Kraft of the ANS.
Next year, I will be applying for one of F.U.N. scholarships that are offered. Object lesson: sharpen up your writing skills.

VKurtB got a reaction from CIII in Of the 333 million presumably alive and well and residing in the United States today, how many are "coin collectors?"
Yes, because the one thing you can ALWAYS count on is coin collectors being chatty about what they own. /eye roll so huge you can hear it
Face it: most of the most advanced collections today are cloaked in 100% secrecy. If ANYONE knows what’s out there, it’s the dealers that top collectors are working with.

I nearly always prefer OIP/OGP.

On the number of collectors?
Even aside from definitional differences, it's not possible.

VKurtB reacted to The Neophyte Numismatist in Which of these Coins is a Better Purchase for a Newbie?
@murder69 is nothing but a spammer and huckster. He is promoting his eBay site and trying to sell in nearly every post. I would beware of this member.

VKurtB got a reaction from Bel_Izeard in What makes a coin rare?
In the COMMERCIAL sense, what makes a coin rare is an excess of demand over supply, usually by a wide margin. In the TECHNICAL sense, rarity is determined by raw mintage. There can be a coin for which only 5 exist, but only 3 people want it.

VKurtB reacted to Just Bob in Ancients or Vault Protectors... Which is a better buy?
This forum is not your personal venue for hawking your coins. The marketplace forum is the place to sell coins. Please stop spamming this forum.
And, while I have your attention, intruding on other posters threads, trying to sell them coins for which they are not looking, is in poor taste.

It’s more than you think, but fewer than there needs to be. We need to wean people OFF of YouTube videos.

But the Mint clearly did. I’m not sure whether marketing spin or government employee spin is responsible.

Newbie logs on. Claims to have a rare error coin. Unanimous experts say no. Newbie argues. Feelings get hurt. Now where have I seen this before? Oh yeah, right HERE. HUNDREDS of times. Nothing new.
