Coinbuf reacted to J P M in 1989 p dime with multiple errors possibly?
Sorry to say, it looks like it took a hard hit. That is why there is extra metal on the reverse it has been pushed up. A clip would have less metal near the edge.

CAC lists this as $234, and it is a pop 1 at this grade level with CAC bean. You can always check the CAC price guide on the CAC site, here is a link to the page for this coin.

Coinbuf got a reaction from Fenntucky Mike in 1983 silver penny
Well, there actually is a question as from your moon shot photo of one side of this coin there is no way to tell if your coin exhibits any true or fake doubling of any type. However, as your coin is overweight; copper coated zinc core cents should weigh 2.5g; your coin has been plated or painted to arrive at this color and weight. Lots of Lincoln cents of all years have been plated or painted as novelty items for decades.
In the future you should start a new thread rather than adding onto a two year old thread, makes it easier to follow. And in all cases, you need to post cropped photos of both sides of the coin so that the coin takes up most/all of the space of the photo vs the background being the primary.

A wheatie is always a fun find in circulation. Far too much glare to be able to opine about the condition of the coin, try taking your photos with the coin laying on a black or white surface and then crop.

Coinbuf got a reaction from GoldFinger1969 in CACG has arrived. Loudly knocking. Will NGC and PCGS answer the door? Do you think NGC and PCGS will counter CACG and their "premium certification" services with their own new services or certifications?
You are looking in the wrong place, ebay is the ultimate dumping ground for common date common garbage. And you left out raw coins, how many raw coins are listed on ebay today? CACG is still new so there is not a lot of material to clog up ebay just yet. My view from the sidelines is that while there is some premium for the common stuff in CACG holders, the real action and premiums are for the gem (MS65) and up material.
Still as a business man I'd take any premium over none. That doesn't mean that CACG graded material will double or triple the price of P or N graded coins, but 10% to 20% more is not unusual. As a coin dealer if you factor in the new low cost submission tiers at CACG for sub $500 Morgan dollars, plus a modest premium of say $10 a coin, the savings and/or gains over time could add up.
Still early in the game, two years from now will be the time to look at premiums and volume of coins on sites like ebay, GC, FB and others. Your argument is the very similar to what coin dealers said when TPG's were just getting started. Won't work, collectors don't want coins in plastic, blah blah, looks like they were wrong back then.

Coinbuf got a reaction from NeverEnoughCoins09 in New Addition 1892-S Morgan Dollar
Last five PCGS auction data shown on the PCGS coinfacts page show a low of $159 to a high of $204 as the most recent auction appearance, retail prices would be slightly above these auction figures. Currently there are two listed on collectors corner, one at $190 and one at $250, neither of these are CAC approved.

Coinbuf got a reaction from RWB in Misprint Dime
Welcome to the forum, just a damaged coin. Some damage we can call out when it is decipherable, but this is just random damage that could have come from any number of things, intentional or not.
In the future please provide cropped photos of both sides of the coin when you have a question.

Coinbuf reacted to powermad5000 in Misprint Dime
Hello and welcome!
First off, coins are struck not printed. Paper money is printed. Stamps are printed. Coins are struck.
Your photo is not cropped, and you also do not show the reverse of the coin, but from what I can tell, there looks like an indentation coming from the reverse of the coin and the coin itself looks to me intentionally damaged as I also see some very heavy crisscrossing scratches across the obverse. Once a coin is severely damaged, I do not think it is worth the time to try to figure out how the damage came to be. I think that time would be spent more wisely learning more or searching for coins in superior shape.

Coinbuf reacted to Sandon in Misprint Dime
Welcome to the NGC chat board.
Please provide upright photos of each side of this 2019-D Roosevelt dime that are cropped to show the coin to the greatest extent possible and not the surface on which it sits. Based on what I can see so far, the coin has just been severely damaged after it left the mint and is not a mint error.

Coinbuf reacted to Fenntucky Mike in What should I do with "altered surface"?
From NGC: "ALTERED SURFACE - The coin's surfaces have been extensively manipulated. For example, a Proof coin that has been altered to appear to be a Mint State coin, or vice versa. This alteration can often make authentication impossible."
Odds are if you send it back to NGC or PCGS that you will get the same result. If this was acquired as a gift or inheritance (in a way where it cost you little to no money) then I would just keep it as is, if you purchased this from someone clamming that it was an authentic problem free coin then I'd try to return it to them and get your money back.

Coinbuf reacted to JT2 in What should I do with "altered surface"?
it is a real coin. they will not encapsulate it because someone has either worked on the surfaces to remove scratches or other marks or smoothed it out, or made to look better than what it really is. PCGS will not encapsulate it either.. you may get ICG or ANACS to do it.
-
Coinbuf got a reaction from JT2 in Is this a mint error?
To my eye it looks like a small piece of lint that could have landed on the coin during the encapsulation of the coin, that has happened before. Are you sure it is metal and is on the coin inside the plastic? I ask because I have seen a few instances where someone had something on the outside of the plastic but mistook it for being on the coin, those proof surfaces can sometimes cast shadows and trick the eye.

Coinbuf reacted to Fenntucky Mike in What foreign coin weighs about 2.83 grams ? .
Doesn't look like there was one at the time in Denver. I agree that the coin looks to have been exposed to some type of corrosive substance which ate away the surface reducing the weight.
