  1. It is really just following the market and watching the auction sites, however here is a link to a spreadsheet that was put together and is maintained by a member on the PCGS forum. It is a census of the three earliest NGC slab generations, not totally complete as we know there are still some old holders that are as of yet undiscovered in some of the old time collections. Much like the pop reports this data gives some clues to the true pop. NGC census
  2. I am in Phoenix Arizona Hog, not unusual for it to be over 120 degrees on summer days, most summers we will see at least 40 days with temps over 110. Heck the nights only cool down to about 90 thru most of Jun thru Aug. Now you know why I have few toned coins.
  3. Too hot here, books left outside like that in summer here would spontaneously combust well almost.
  4. In this niche area of collecting yes it is more about the holder than the coin, NGC gen1, gen 2 and gen2.1 are hot and the prices have been climbing on these. The same can be said for the PCGS OGH and some of the rattlers, especially the ones that have cert numbers starting with 108. There is a small but active group of collectors (myself included) who find enjoyment in the collection of such items, really no different that those who collect (and pay crazy prices) for damaged coins (now known as errors) or the insane premiums some are willing to pay for color, it is an upside down market in many ways. @Thirteenth , you may be correct as I stopped chasing these due to the prices which I think are over inflated and frankly out of my comfort range. But I do hope you get as much as possible for it, that is a good sign for myself and all the old holders I own.
  5. The holder may just snap together and is not sealed at all.
  6. Something to keep in mind, any legislation enacted written as the current proposal would not have any direct effect on anyone here, as proposed it only would affect the top 1% of the wealthy. But the long term effects of this kind of policy, and the almost inevitable slippery slope it presents is where the real danger lies, simply put once you open that bottle it will be near impossible to recork.
  7. I'm not really sure what it is you are after, you can go to any of your current sets and use autobuild anytime. That will automatically put the coins with the highest point values into the slots for your sets, no need to delete or reset anything.
  8. From USA Today, "Should the wealthy pay taxes on expensive art and wine? Joe Biden thinks so. Here's how it would work". If something like this became reality, I have to think that coins would be put onto that list along with physical gold and silver. Should this or some version of this be enacted into law how do you think the rare coin market be impacted? Here is a link to the article for those interested in reading it. Please this is not about politics just wondering if others would have concerns about this type of policy and the impact on collectors and the coin market. USA Today
  9. Very nice, sadly we have no such book sharing like this here.
  10. Good to hear, hope you and your family will not be seeing him around soon.
  11. I do not think that NGC would automatically consider these as environmentally damaged, but it is a possibility most likely on the 1896. The issue I see with these spots is that they have a negative impact on the eye appeal of the coins. In addition, as @Fenntucky Mike noted the coins seem to have little or no luster in the photos, if that is the case in hand these may not be the best candidates for grading and slabbing. These are all common dates and from the photos in AU or low MS condition and worth less than $100 each, after the costs to ship and grade these you would likely gain very little value over their value as raw coins. And if any came back AU50 or lower they would be worth less than the cost of the plastic, not every old coin is worth slabbing.
  12. 2.0 holders are quite rare these days and the prices on coins in these have been moving up sharply in fact recently a CAC gold bean 1881-S recently sold on Heritage for around 5K, however I do not remember right off it that was a 2.0 or 2.1. the current census for known 2.0 holders is at 197 last I checked and 2.1 holders at 205, however in my experience the 2.1 holder is harder to find. There are a few 2.0 and 2.1 holders listed on ebay right now, the most expensive one I have seen recently I have on my watch list which is an 1885 O MS64PL CAC listed at $4K and at that price I suspect it will be there for a very long time. To the OP, if you had a less common date CC, with a gold CAC bean your ask would be much more in line with the market, I would say that your coin is worth closer to $1K in value.
  13. Just some generic holder it has no value, the advice above is spot on that coin is not a coin worth sending for grading. It has been abused and cleaned and has no numismatic value, however if it has some personal attachment that is the driving force behind your desire to have it graded and slabbed then it may be worth it to you. Aside from the other obvious issues the coin looks to have active PVC on it, so whatever you decide to do with it you should crack it out and give it an acetone bath.
  14. What any TPG says is of no importance to me.
  15. Nice another ridiculous claim made by some anonymous poster with no proof, somebody pass the popcorn.
  16. Not I, again too far and too expensive.
  17. Not enough information to make a judgement.
  18. That does suck, had the same thing happen many years back with an old small ANACS coin. Part of the reason why I never play the crack out game anymore. Looks like a patch of hairline scratches around the arrowtips at the bottom of the rev.
  19. Sounds like a fantastic class as I'm sure all the summer seminar classes are. Sadly for me I can never take a full week away from my business much less at my busiest time of the year, I hope everyone that is signed up has a blast.
  20. I just could not resist the low hanging fruit Kurt.
  21. Of higher importance yours has CAC approvial built in!! Just think how jelly Kurt will be.
