I've been thinking.......we have a "For the love of copper" thread, so why not a "For the love of silver" thread? So, let's give this a try!! Post any coins you want to share, just as long as they're silver. I'll start us off with my only Faustina the Younger provincial, a silver Tetradrachm minted in Alexandria, Egypt:
Let's see some great silver!!!

Mohawk reacted to Coinbuf in Is CoinTalk.com a scam?
You are incorrect, coin talk is not a scam, they are not gaining anything or stealing or taking anything from anyone. It was your choice to go there, open an account and post, the only thing you lost was your time which you gave by your own free will. I am not a member there but have heard from others that have also been banned that it is heavily moderated, the common thing all those individuals have is that they were all banned, so there is that.
As a side note I did not see your name G_P when I did a google search for numismatist, the first thing to come up was wikipedia.

The price may show up online what people are selling them for but I guarantee you a dealer wouldn’t pay $70 for MS70 silver eagle … only way to get that is if you sell it yourself to another collector who willing to pay that price … that’s the thing with graded bullion , it’s a one way street the dealer sells to you makes high profit leaves you stuck when it time to sell your only choice is sell it online to public or another collector who maybe building a registry set

Which is why I think it's truly an amazing bunco game. Take coins minted purely for their metal value, declare them collectible, and get eager beavers to pay premiums for what is simply a bullion coin--cha-ching. It's great for the grading services--they get oceans of coins to grade--and it creates this artificial demand for coins that would not normally be considered collectible. I have to wonder whether the Franklin Mint is somehow behind it.

Yep....if you need U.S. Gold in your life, Saints are a good way to go.

Let me preface this by saying that I know nearly nothing about the market of actually collecting Gold Eagles. I really just see them as bullion, not really anything to properly collect. An unpopular opinion, I'm sure, in some circles but I want to be completely transparent. That being said, I'd say no, I wouldn't bother with it. To me, it's money that you don't need to spend and a hassle you don't need to bring on yourself. Honestly, if they were mine, I'd sell all of them and purchase some actual collector coins with the proceeds. As I said above, if you feel you need U.S. Gold in your life, Saints are a good choice. I'd just sell or trade the Gold Eagles for Saints, honestly.

You could be right there. However, there's that weird collector need for completeness, which with my massive and insane pursuit, you know I definitely feel. I think those expensive, rare dates kind of hurt Saints a bit as far as attracting serious collectors. There are a good number of collectors who can afford 1922's, 1923-D's, 1924's and 1928's, but a lot fewer who can ever hope to afford a 1920-S, 1921, 1927-D, 1930-S and other dates like that. Since completing a true, complete set of Saints is so difficult, I think that fact puts some collectors off taking Saints on as a collection. I could be wrong, but it's a theory of mine. I've known about Saints since I was a kid, but I've never felt the draw......but I'm a bit of an odd bird numismatically speaking

Mohawk reacted to Conder101 in Clad layer
A clad layer weighs about .91 grams so a quarter missing a clad layer would weigh 4.76 grams. When you make allowance for tolerance a weight of 4.62 grams fits very nicely for a missing clad layer coin. I would say it's the real deal.

Single sided is the NORMAL way to find missing clad layers. Why would both sides be missing? When I see both missing, I am instantly suspicious.

Check out the thread on Roger Burdette's (RWB on these forums) Saint-Gaudens book. Almost as valuable as the book itself !
5-figures at least in AU or higher, 6 or more in the higher grades. And the highest-gradeds for Saints like the 1927-D's in the low-7's.
I think we agreed with the gist of an article/blog over in the RWB Saint Thread that there are probably a few hundred (~500) serious Saint registry collectors....then there are maybe tens of thousands (~25,000) who are type collectors or folks who collect some Saints but aren't into getting all of them or doing registry....and then there are the investment folks who buy based on newsletters and infomercials numbering in the hundreds of thousands buying the lower-graded coins as bullion subsitutes.
I think more people would collect them for bullion or numismatic reasons if they knew about them. I didn't know about Saints until I was in my 40's.

Mohawk got a reaction from Coinbuf in What percentage of active coin collectors read hobby books....
Then I'm old school, too, Bob. Like I said, I want the RIC volume which has my beloved Faustina in it. I could find a lot of the information I'd need from it online (which I currently do for lack of having the book), but I want the actual book.

So, you're a Saint guy? That's a cool pursuit, but a difficult one, no doubt about it. The 1920-S, 1921, those post 1923 mint mark issues and those 1930's dates are TOUGH and some of them are just killers!!! I wonder how many Saint enthusiasts there are.....I'd imagine there are quite a few, but likely not approaching the numbers of those EAC folks.....you're right.....that's a whole different sub-community within our community. And, you're right about the Faustina set.....it's the only thing I do now because it's absolutely repulsively titanic!! I'd love a meeting of Faustina enthusiasts, but, sadly, I think I'd be sitting at the table for such a meeting all by myself, talking to myself and my coins
