  1. Thanks for the heads up zadok......but I sadly do not have aureus money at the present time But if I did......I'd be trying for sure. Thanks for the heads up anyway.....that was an awesome thing to do and I appreciate it
  2. JAnsley....I should ask if you're having a better day before I share my thoughts on that coin.
  3. Hello and Welcome Jblindy, My answer to this is that if you genuinely like the set and want it for your collection, you should acquire one. But if money is a concern that goes beyond just wanting the set because you like it, then it might be better to wait. Modern U.S. Mint stuff often goes down in varying degrees after they hype on the product goes down. So, it's really up to you based on what your reasons for collecting are and your collecting goals. I'm probably a bad one to ask about numismatic investing. I now only collect one thing, which are coins of Roman Empress Faustina the Younger. Even after almost 1,900 years, the vast majority of her coins are still extremely common. Her coins are almost like the 1980's baseball cards of Second Century CE coinage. I'm certainly not going to be able to retire on a Faustina colllection. But I'm fascinated by her and I love her coins, so I buy them for that reason....for love.
  4. Why does this need to be political? It's a freaking coin board. Can't we just leave political garbage out of it?
  5. Looks like Sam is doing much, much better.....that's great to see!!! I also love the shirt.....I'm a firm believer in the power of pizza! It's also great that Ben has discovered disdain for fakes...even if it was likely because he wanted to use genuine articles for Beyblades! I love that he actually threw them on the ground!! When I bought that fake Ottoman gold piece 9 years ago, I wanted to do that exact same thing, let me tell you!!! And yeah......you don't want Ben speaking of even a silver bar around other people. And you definitely don't want him calling it a gold bar!!! That's probably a tough one to cross with a kid his age without terrifying him. But, yeah, that seems like an issue you're going to have to discuss with him. Very glad to see Sam with a lot more oomph in him and I'm glad you guys are almost through the quarantine.
  6. I'm with Woods on all counts.....machine doubling and possibly proof-like, but we'll need some different photos to be as sure as we can be from photos on that part of it.
  7. Another interesting point and I'm sure you're right.....there was a sales angle to it, I'm sure. And you're right about the experts in numismatics....there aren't many and those that do exist are often experts in a few very specialized areas. And you're correct about the knowledge levels of a lot of collectors, in my experience. I've been doing this for 22 years as an adult and I'd only consider myself an expert in two very specialized areas: Late Ottoman coinage and the coinage of Roman Empress Faustina the Younger. And that's it. I wouldn't call myself an expert in any other areas in numismatics. I have a lot of knowledge in a lot of areas from collecting for 22 years and selling for 13 years, but I'm certainly not an expert outside of those two areas. I think a lot of us are similar.....we get into our areas of interest and pursue them at the expense of learning about other things. I know I'm guilty of this. And I'm sorry about the hijack as well.....we kind of got off track on you, Neo and I apologize.
  8. That's an interesting article, Woods. Breen was definitely a sick and troubled man and even his "contributions" to our hobby are suspect. Breen told a lot of lies. I wish I remembered the article title (maybe someone here will know the source I'm referring to and post it, or at least the name and author), but I read somewhere years ago that someone who worked with Breen said that if he didn't know something, he'd make it up and a lot of his fallacies made it into print and they're still haunting the hobby today. So, even many of his supposed positive contributions to numismatics are often anything but......they're fanciful lies with no basis in reality that just popped out of Breen's head. I'd say his toxicity definitely extended into numismatics, though telling lies about coins vastly pales in comparison to Breen's other "activities".
  9. I'm leaning toward severe machine doubling myself more as I think about it. But it is one of those things that makes you look multiple times and you're just not 100% sure. I think Jonathan is correct.....if this were a doubled die, another example would have popped up somewhere. Based on my searching, none have. Even if the premium were small, someone would have found another one and said something, somewhere. That's also playing into my thoughts. I have an Ottoman nickel 20 Para with a minor doubled die.....and talk about an obscure coin series!!! It took a lot of looking, but I did find someone with another example on a Turkish coin website that is now defunct. But the coin there was certainly from the same dies as the one I have. If I could find another copy of that doubled die, you'd think another one of these would be somewhere.....if it were a true doubled die.
  10. I agree. I didn't mean anything about the OP's actual pics. They're actually quite good.....I should have been clearer. I was responding to this: There have been way too many useless cropped close-ups around here in general. I need to explain myself better......I got a flu shot on Tuesday and I'm definitely not doing my best work today Flu shots tend to kick my butt....I should probably just stick to talking about Tiger Sharks in the nature thread until I recover a bit more.
  11. Oh Wally Breen......still hanging over this hobby like a phosgene cloud on a World War I battlefield. He had about the same effect as phosgene on almost everything he touched, too.
  12. I've been trying to find any information on a 1984 Doubled Die Greek 1 Drachma a bit today and I've found nothing. This coin kind of has me stumped as parts of it look like they could be legit, but most of it does look shelfy to me, too. I think it would be possible to have a doubled die and machine doubling on the same coin, but the lack of a record of a 1984 Doubled Die Greek 1 Drachma is what really has me stumped. Jonathan's right.....I think if such a thing existed, there would be some kind of a record of another one. That being said, Greek coins are not my strongest point. I know some, but I'm nowhere near an expert on the subject. But Jason is also correct.....doubled dies and errors on non-U.S. coinage doesn't tend to bring a premium. I hate to say it, but I just can't commit to an answer on this one right now.
  13. Indeed. I agree 100%. All of these zoomed in pics coming up around here lately are not helpful......I think we're going to need to post something about this on the Read Before Posting Thread.
  14. So true. I never thought about it that way before, Roger. I'll endeavor to use better terminology going forward
  15. And that's the most important part right there!! I'm glad you managed to score a set, Mike!
  16. Looking good, Mike!!! But I disagree on one point.....I like both sides of the new design better than the old design.....just my humble opinion because I like naturalistic eagles much better than heraldic ones. I'm glad you're happy with the set and thanks for sharing it with us
  17. It's a business strike. A damaged business strike, sadly.
  18. That's a nice one, Alex, no doubt about it!! I need to go buy myself a denarius so I can add to the thread again!!
  19. Yep. We need full obverse and reverse photos. These magnified photos of just a part of the coin are little to no help at all.
