I'm a big fan of waiting for the right coin to come along. Something nice without major problems. I don't care for something that will be hard to sell in the future. Made that mistake many times in my early days.

The coin has been cleaned and has been in circulation. It has lost most of it's luster. It's worth the price of silver at this point. That is about $10.48 as of this morning. Nice image. It leaves little more to learn about the coin. If you don't agree, send the coin to NGC and prove the members here are wrong.
Anyone with a basic understanding of this hobby will tell you it's a waste of time and money.

No, the only feature notable about the coin on top are hairline scratches indicating that it has been abrasively "cleaned".

Correct, full stop. It’s like counting ballots in a county with deep red and deep blue precincts. You can tell when the precinct changes.

As a normal the grader is not going to know who sent the coin in for grading. It is possible with famous coins or collections that the grader already knew who owns those coins.

Just a guess. Maybe NGC does not want two different labels out there for the same variety. I remember when the variety got it's nickname on the coin forums. I believe that was before the variety had an FS#. Can't think of many nicknames that lasted long.

Everyone here needs to get real. The new folks here get treated like trash. They can't ask a simple question without getting stupid answers that put them down. That is not what this site is here for. Stop with the do this and do that . It is insulting and the new folks have said that many times.

I think that the OP knows perfectly well that his 1957-D cent is just damaged.  I'll refrain from speculating on his motives for claiming that a scraped and crushed coin exhibits "die failure".

I'm not seeing anything that looks like a die break. Nothing that looks like die failure. The weak lettering on the reverse looks like the results from a filled die. I'm seeing lots of dents, scratches and wear from circulation. Part of the rim damage came from being smashed or possibly the blank was punched from the end of the strip. This can create a blank that is not the same thickness across the blank. There is one spot on the rim that could have been caused by someone using the coin as a screwdriver.
It's not possible to be sure what caused some damage but it's still clear that it is just damage. I'm not sure NGC would even slab the coin but I'm sure they will not grade it. If anything the label would just say DAMAGED. It will cost $50 to $60 in fees to answer that.
I would take that same money and go out for a nice steak dinner.

ldhair reacted to Sandon in 1989 struck on copper and the 9 looks like a 2 what error is this?
The "transition" had occurred back in 1982. If there were any 95% copper pieces struck at any mint in 1989, I haven't heard it from the numismatic press. Where did you obtain this information?
Why do you believe that your 1989 cent was struck in the old composition? You don't state its weight, which would be approximately 3.11 grams if it were, as opposed to approximately 2.5 grams for the copper plated zinc composition that it should be.  Even from the uncropped photos provided, the coin exhibits numerous plating blisters, which are indicative of its being a normal copper plated zinc example.

I feel sorry for some of the new collectors that join this site. All the do this and don't do that post, just upset new members. There are better, more friendly ways to teach.
