they are legal tender, which means they cannot be knocked off or counterfeited without legal repercussions.
And we all know that this always works. ...................................I know Mike did not say this it is just a funny statement in his quote...

It has always been so hard to find brand new nickels without all the dings and scrapes. Best I have ever been able to do is MS 66 6FS on any of them from cash register change.
TPG do not grade Nickels very high anyway. MS 66 is a good grade. I think they are scared to grade them any higher.

Thank you. So that's really 100 points vs 70 points, omitting the + - * !!!!!!!! and LQQK stuff. The definitions are all guesses, with almost no empirical content.
I get it.. the 10=70 and if I take off the 9. and change it to a 6 then I have all my MS 60 - MS 69 .well that was easy............. BS all day.

We have the same coin. Nice coin! Yours has a SP/PL surface...NICe!
Ya Mike, Your SP looks to have a different finish? Your coin is from the set and mine looks like the matt finish strike. I must just be the lighting on your coin makes it look different.

Yes after a year I would think things have changed ,,,,,,,,,,,, Unless Arthur Finch has found that time is irrelevant.

From the weight, I’d guess tin. Can tin be plated with silver?
Didn't the British silver plate anything that was not moving to fast.

I don't know if they use the term piedfort (strong foot) to describe this or not, but it would be good to determine the composition which I suspect may be bronze. Probably one of the thicker tokens ever posted on this thread. It exudes scarcity. Great find!
Here ya go.

To be honest @J P M, I am not as good at grading these as I am looking at other series. I went to look at some graded examples, and I am not sure how it would go. J's hair on the obverse in grades 65,66,67 all seem to have progressively more details in the hair than this coin has. BUT, the reverses on any of the ones I looked at do not have as much detail in Monticello as this one has. I don't know where the graders would draw the line at strike wise as the reverse on the one you have asked about is really awesome for the year and mintmark but there seems to be less details evident in the hair. Considering the few nicks evident on the reverse as well, I think the graders would factor those in so I am going to make my humble guess that it would grade out as a 66. I think those nicks would keep it from achieving a grade of 67.
Thanks for your opinion, Not many collectors like to guess grades on nickels and dimes. I agree that nickels are hard to grade. Almost every year has a oddity you have to be aware of in this series. In the early sixty's the hair was always a problem with strike. I think they would let that go as is. I agree the bag marks on the reverse are going to hold it at a 66. Most of the TPG do not give out 67-70 on regular strike coins unless it is flawless. That is why the price jump is so dramatic in those last four grades. Thanks again for looking. powermad.
