  1. Hi all , I'm always looking to better my odds and it is tough coin market out there nowadays. Some of the old timers are saying not to hold true on to the lookup prices from NGC or PCGS as their listings are a bit high? So should I just take a percentage off when shopping to be safe. Obviously most dealers price by the Gray sheet magazine and everyone has to make a living, but that is a bit pricy to have . So when I am out shopping I always look up on my phone the prices on the NGC page or the PCGS page for comparison it is just so much easier ? So the question is should I pick up a Blue book also it seams kinda silly because prices change daily nowadays. Just wanted to see what you all thought.

My finds today. 1922 D and 1926 S wheat cents and a 1868 Three cent Nickel. Just 15 cents left to find for my complete penny collection from 1909-2021, but oh those 15 cents are gonna cost me. :0)

The problem is theoretically the Slab adds no value. This is debatable as far as in reality would a slabbed coin sell for more. But the old adage is buy the coin not the slab. Also a lot of collectors feel slabbing a modern proof, especially bullion, is a waste of time and money. The coin in the original packaging is sufficient and the difference between 69/70 is almost indiscernible.

Im summary there are many arguments that you overpaid by $20 for the coin you bought if you paid $20 over retail.

Good Point Woods. I sure hope a grade makes a difference in Morgan's because I have been buying slabs only lately.:whatthe:  Now I bought all my ASE's from 1986 to 2021 off the shelf so I don't have any boxes LoL , Yes they are nice  I hand picked them .But I don't think any dealer would say, Oh ya that  unslabed  ASE is a MS70 for sure I will give you full price for that :roflmao:with my luck I will be lucky to get market price for ASE's down the road . But Morgan is still my favorite girl at heart.

The wholesale sector, whose dealers keep getting named "Dealer of the Year", and similar accolades, generate the cash flow that makes TPGS firms possible, and things like ANA shows possible with their sponsorships. I am always fully aware where all that cash comes from - the poor schmuck beginners who are sold a bill of goods that graded bullion means anything. It doesn't. It never will. They play unwary new collectors for suckers.

I agree with you to a point. I also have bought a slab ASE MS 70 DCAM and a ASE MS 70 2011 25th Anniversary coin. But I only paid $20 each, over the retail price of the bare coin. So if you shop around a bit it can be a savings over sending a bare coin in yourself for grading. The big question is will they be worth more money in the years to come????Perhaps not ??? Who's to say what items will be worth .I should have also kept my cherry 1957 Chevy and my 65 Impala SS and my 72 Dodge Dart ????????:preach:

  5. Thanks woods, I thought I was pushing it a bit on the 64 D with the face nicks. Now holding the the 64 P on a angle to cut down the glare has some barely only able to see with the USB scope marks, The reverse is fine but it looks like the obverse may have got a ding or two from being in a envelope with other 2X2 holders with those nice rounded staples. So I guess that would drop it down to a 65 or 64

  6. Just hanging out tonight and I thought I would do some grade test guessing so on the 1964 D I give it a 58 and on the Philly  I give it a 68 seeing there are no Quarters at NGC or PCGS listed any higher LoL. Anyone want to give me there assessment please and let me know if I am close or still need more practice lol

eBay has tons of ngc pcgs anacs slabbed coins all prices (amazing amount available for 10-20$)perhaps saving all those grading fees and just get a variety of slabbed coins in different grades and then you’ll have something to compare with 🤓The errors may be a little more but photo grading books around not sure about errors.

I roll hunt all the time it is fun to find coins with cracks chips and strike related problems. That is why I made the Cherry Picker Post thread to ask questions and learn from the professionals here on the forum. Anything that has potential I will label and save in a file. I may never send a coin in for grading because most are to small a defect to be worth the cost but there is always a chance that someday I will post a coin the collectors here say may be a slab keeper and when that day comes I will send it out. I agree that buying a slab coin is cheaper most the time and you may get lucky like that VAM Morgan I just found the other day. It's not worth a big chunk of $ but still finding it was the most fun. Have fun with your hobby and always be honest to yourself, and others, and keep looking :preach:

Here comes the newbie with his 2cents. (I’m trying to educate myself and ask questions or make a statement reflecting my learning). At least you have a silver quarter because the 65 on no gots silver🤓

true James, after 64 there were only 40% silver coins like Kennedy Half's and Ike Dollars and later special silver mint sets became available.

The question was concerning so called 1964 Special Mint Set. My comment concerned 1964 coins only.

Sorry Moxie  I thought you meant that SMS sets did not exist at all?

In reality Special Mint Set is a misnomer as there were no sets ever made.

I Should have said proof sets were available in 64 and SMS sets started in 65 to my knowledge.
