  1. Thanks Mark and Coinbuf. While RWB makes a good point about speculation I do value others opinions. I clearly had some hesitancy which is why I asked. I value both of your opinions and big purchases is where I actually want feedback versus the smaller ones. I guess I’m accustomed to the corporate world where I have a “steering committee” to look at things from all angles. Perhaps I’ll get a steering committee of a few of you to help me with opinions as I make some of the purchases.
  2. I am contemplating a purchase on the following coin, and wanted some other opinions. I love the fact that it’s not toned, but that also worries me. It graded MS66 at NGC. What are others opinions on is this solid for grade?
  3. I looked for a while and this one stood out so I had to have it. The only negative is the small delaminated area under the date. If it wasn’t for that I think it would go higher.
  4. Someone here will be able to quickly identify I am sure, but I am not familiar. What I can provide is a great app that is extremely helpful in identifying unknown coins. You take a picture of the coin on your phone and it helps identify. Coinoscope is the name of the app. Give it a try.
  5. There is one minor DDO for this date/mint but I don’t see it on this coin. However the pictures are blurry. Here is a resource for you to compare to. Variety Vista should be your first place to look if you suspect you have a variety. http://www.varietyvista.com/01b LC Doubled Dies Vol 2/1969DDDO001.htm P.S.: the Third Party Graders do not attribute all varieties, and this one is an example not recognized by NGC. Here is the resource to see what NGC will attribute. https://www.ngccoin.com/variety-plus/united-states/cents/lincoln-cents-memorial-reverse-1959-2008/?page=1
  6. Yes sir. Charles Barber had to spend the last part of his career engraving design to replace his namesake coins. And he wasn’t treated very well by some of the designers or president Roosevelt. Kind of feel bad for him in a way. But he also wasn’t the most skilled engraver of the list.
  7. And a recent one added to the Merc set. A former Dominick/Joshua collection top pop. My pictures are awful and don’t do it justice. I usually depend on listing pictures and I forgot to save them for this one.
  8. RWB writes too many books to keep them straight 😂
  9. And of course I gave you the wrong book. It was actually in the 1905-1908 volume.
  10. I’ll give you a hint because my clue is probably not very good. It was referenced in Renaissance of American Coinage 1909-1915
  11. Ok as a tribute to RWB and one of his books I’ll crudely paraphrase into a question. Somewhat similar to a previous question. This engraver spent his final years on the job engraving, begrudgingly, new designs to replace his legacy.
  12. He has a few things that caught my eye and I’m going to see what he would do on. A lot of it I may be able to better in auction. My intent is to cut out the middle man and save me and a seller some money. So if anyone has something they may auction let me know before and we may be able to cut out fees. On many of the higher end coins 15% makes a huge difference.
  13. Sorry I wasn’t aware he had a website. I’ll look on there. Thank you.
  14. Yes I would be very interested. If he wants to sell he can contact me. By my thought process, which is more than likely highly skewed, I’m going to try as much as possible to buy within 2 grades to top pop. I’m looking at it as an investment for my heirs as well, and I personally get worried about top pops. It gets crazy quickly, but I am focusing on a point or two below that where it’s still premium quality but not at top pop prices. That’s my current approach anyway.
  15. I know. As I said within reason. But the more plentiful types I want to try and get as high grade as reasonable. I am prepared to spend a meaningful amount, but I’m never going to be approaching the upper echelon. I will not be adding an 1804 dollar or 1933 double eagle to my type set 😂
  16. I have been working hard on a type set for the last year. I decided it will be more fun, for me atleast, to have one of everything versus completing some of my sets so I’m pausing to focus on the type set. If you have any very nice examples of coins that you may send to say heritage or another auction house, let me know. If it’s something I need we may be able to work something out so that we can both avoid fees and it be a win/win for both sides financially. But I’m looking for near top grades in most types within reason, not on some of the six and seven figure types. Examples of some holes I have: Half cents Two cents Large Capped bust dime Actually most draped bust coins I am early in the search so a lot of holes to fill. I hate to see fees be paid if you have what I may want so giving this a shot.
  17. Your old friend John Carr I assume? 😂. Couldn’t resist.
  18. Etsy started as a marketplace for people to sell arts and crafts type items. Somehow coin arts and crafts have made their way on there.
  19. I would argue almost that Morgan was the answer to Moxie’s. But I guess it depends on which designs you regard as the best. But I much prefer the designs before Morgan was engraver vs after myself.
  20. I’ll admit I can only name MAYBE half the chief engravers and what they did. Maybe
  21. No lie look at Etsy. It’s a hotspot for counterfeits of all kinds. Obviously not to buy but if you want to see a bunch of fakes that’s a good start.
  22. Collect what you enjoy and it’s hard to go wrong unless you over pay
  23. I agree. The V75 ASEs are a perfect example. And they were in much higher demand. But within weeks the mania started subsiding and prices started dropping. Still valuable but the highest prices were right out of the gate.
