  1. Don’t be bothered. Every board has one…. Mine is the least “expert” of the ones you received, but you got consistent grade guidance from some very knowledgeable people. In fact one was a professional grader for NGC for many years. So take tangential comments with a grain of salt.
  2. Have you looked at many graded Morgans? If you can find 1 in 10 that the eagle’s breast doesn’t show some marks you are doing well. Bag marks and hits can happen just as much on the reverse as the obverse granted it is more likely on the obverse based on the process post strike. And they were often transported long distances from CC in bags to banks elsewhere. That doesn’t mean it was circulated.
  3. Also error-ref and variety vista are good sources to look for varieties, pictures and education.
  4. Stanton is a very respected numismatist and author. Kudos to you for finding reputable information. Don’t go to YouTube for education. It will lead you astray. For now here is a nice article by our hosts that talks about strike doubling vs doubled die. https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/5688/Double-Dies-vs-Machine-Doubling/
  5. So what if it’s * and CAC? It still needs to be lower points than the next grade level it would seem. This is an interesting game we play!
  6. Agreed. It has to be. If not we sure have more issues. I’m thinking it has to be similar to * graded coins. It will be interesting if * or CAC carry the same weight or which is more. It’s definitely getting very complex to calculate.
  7. Not to derail your thread, but a related question I’m pretty sure I already know the answer to. Is there any way to determine by TPG number if a coin has been to CAC and did not get stickered? I’ve looked for ways and have searched Cert numbers on CACs website of coins that I think would go to CAC but have no sticker to see if the Cert came back as failed with no luck. Just so I make double sure I’m not missing something does anyone know a way to check this? This could effect the value of a coin largely I think.
  8. Just be civil and you will be fine. The people I see that run into issues want to argue and demean more than factually debate and learn. Having an opinion and challenging appropriately will never be an issue. Or shouldn’t be anyway.
  9. No not at all. This is a place for debate and conversation. If you enjoy them go for it. Just don’t be surprised if you get some strong arguments that what he does isn’t good for the hobby is all. But as long as people are civil debate is good for all of us in my opinion. This wouldn’t be any fun if we all viewed coins/tokens/etc. the same way.
  10. UrbanDecay, I know you are relatively new to the forum and I think collecting, but Daniel Carr and his work are known well. It’s a highly debated topic on how his work should be viewed. I personally side with the opinion it is counterfeit and should contain the legally required Copy inscribed somewhere on the coin. But I wanted you to know that people aren’t unaware of what this is, many just strongly disagree with it.
  11. HH, It’s in the one that starts with “slabalicious” on the marketplace. About 1/2 to 2/3 down the page under new additions. Here is what he has. 1948D NGC washington quarter ms 66 lightly toned $60
  12. Agreed. But it does call attention to the variation in grades. Which I’m not saying isn’t inevitable or anyone is wrong, but when we get to a 70 point scale it would seem that brings consistency and specificity. CAC highlights that this isn’t necessarily the case and that meaningful deviation still exists. While this is inevitable and not a dig to any TPGs I’m simply pointing out it highlights this variation. So I’m a little surprised that the TPGs want to embrace it versus saying they are highly consistent and specific and that it isn’t needed. I do wonder if the two main TPGs may consider this in their grading going forward. Will this see a tightening of grading versus the grade creep everyone has stated is seemingly occurring. I can see where the two main TPGs want to compete to lead the pack with a higher percentage of their grades receiving a CAC vs the competitor. That would be conceivable. Neither will want to be the one that is less likely to get a bean.
  13. For those of you just starting out or who have young collectors you want to get interested in numismatics I see the mint has some new learning opportunities. In their 2021 collector’s guide I saw a couple things of interest. 1. Quarterverse trivia game “Head to https://usmint.gov/quarterverse on your mobile device and go head-to-head with George Washington - your host for a fun trivia game based on our America the Beautiful Quarters Program.” 2. United States Mint Virtual Tours App ”Want to go behind the scenes at the Philadelphia Mint and see how coins are made? Download the new United States Mint Virtual Tours app from the Apple or Google Play stores to experience the Mint in a way you’ve never seen before. Explore production floors and follow the steps of circulating coin creation with 3-D models, videos, and 360 degree views. Philadelphia is the first in a series of virtual tours to showcase how different Mint facilities “Connect America through Coins.” I am happy to see the Mint offering these resources and in apps that will appeal to the younger collectors
  14. There are no known DDRs for this date/mint. If you have a coin you suspect of having a variety below is the link to a resource that lists the know varieties. http://varietyvista.com/06 Mercury Dime/DDR Listings.htm
  15. After you added the second pictures while I was typing my first response my guess would go down. The obverse has more going on than I saw in the first one. It’s more 62 i would say now.
  16. My estimate would be MS 63/64. Nice luster but usual hits in the cheek and chatter in the fields.
  17. I think it does fuel the fire of TPGs being inconsistent in their grading. I’m somewhat surprised PCGS/NGC want to embrace this as much as they are. Technically speaking if the grade was consistent and solid there would be no need for CAC. We know that’s almost impossible to do but the TPGS embracing this just highlights their grading inconsistency in some ways.
  18. I trust TPGs and CAC much more than my grading skills certainly, but I’ve looked at a few recently that I don’t see how they made the grade and they have a green bean. I’m sure it’s my skills but it makes me wonder sometimes. If you legitimately take the time to compare like coins with like grades and compare to auction results it’s mind boggling in the differences.
  19. I wonder who is paying who with this. It will definitely be a big business driver for CAC. Personally I’ll focus on CAC coins moving forward as I’ve been purchasing a decent amount lately. Luckily I’ve just submitted my paperwork for CAC submission privileges so that will come in handy.
  20. QA, I admittedly couldn’t know less about this set, but I ran across a seller on eBay that has several gem graded roosters for sale. MS66/67. Not sure if this is what you are looking for or need but passing it along. https://www.ebay.com/itm/373489344078?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28
  21. Completely agree with you. And they are beautiful to look at. And a very safe investment so far. Your grandkids will be very proud to own them I am sure.
  22. Yeah it can get brutal. But lots of amazing courses. I get connections through the Phoenix airport a lot. But only stay in town a time or two a year maybe. Nothing like being in the desert and then pulling into one of the resorts that are bright green all of a sudden. Pretty state for sure.
  23. Are you in Cali somewhere? I’m in the south California and the Bay Area several times a year. I’m in the pharma world and those are pharma hot spots.
  24. No worries. It saves me from digging for dates haha. I’ll eventually ship off a bunch if prices keep rising. But I always thought the spread for the dealers was relatively small. Seems they are making $10 spread currently between buy and sell. I like the concept of bullion but it’s a pain in the butt to eventually sell. I hate to see what shipping a monster box will cost!
  25. If I didn’t have flight and hotel points from so much travel for work it would be a different story. But for now I’ll use the only benefit of spending far too many nights in hotels. I’ve never been to a big show either. I’m actually excited to see one.
