  1. And I hope to hit that one. 2 1/2 hours from Mom & Dad's, I can make it a 1-day event unless there's a reason to stay 2 days (grading courses, special auction, etc.).
  2. I'm not an expert on CACs but I think that for the most part you are looking at premiums of about 20% on a non-CAC coin for that type. For collectors or dealers who are heavy or exclusively into CACs, I guess subscribing makes sense. But my 20% Rule Of Thumb is probably accurate for most coins and where not, you can always look up recent auctions or sales. JMHO......
  3. I got a hardcover and softcover for the Thaine B. Price Catalog (1998). Interior is the same, but the cover is just a nice blue titled piece on the hardcover whereas the soft has pics of coins.
  4. And they make the front and back cover of the re-binded book the same as the softcover, right ? Or is it just a plain hardcover with no resemblance to the soft one ?
  5. I remember in high school science class we were asked what killed Jill and most people thought gold paint would prevent her skin from breathing...in fact, I think her body temperature got too high from clogged pores.
  6. Great post, Bob....hey, my coins are for my enjoyment and a little extra windfall in my retirement (maybe) or for my heirs (probably). The financial investments are what I have primarily for both. I don't look at my coins as money I took from my investments or retirement plans and therefor "cheated" myself of returns over the years; they are separate.
  7. Mark, to the best of your knowledge, has the backlog gotten worse at the TPGs since Covid-19...or maybe even before that, given an increase in the number of coins graded (including moderns) ? I'll bet even the Economy service in the 1990's and early-2000's was pretty quick compared to today.
  8. Don't sound so frustrated....NGC has protocols in place to expedite grading, insure safe passage of coins, and treat individual collectors and dealers fairly. It's worked for them for 33+ years. I would answer your questions but as I have never submitted, I'll defer to someone who has.
  9. You seem knowledgeable about coins so why the hostility ? Debate coins, don't attack posters -- or even a TPG. If you want to say you strongly disagree with a TPG on a grade they gave you or didn't give you....FINE. You'd probably get support from here. It's not only toning that matters....it's tone.
  10. If Whitman updates the Double Eagles Guide Book, that would be a great place for some of the information. Or the 7th Edition of the Morgan Silver Dollar book.
  11. I'm not sure it got enough play last April....it was the height of the C-19 pandemic. R.I.P.
  12. The hell with that, I just need to know if you can distract the guards at Ft. Knox while I try and make a break with the ten 1933 Saints......... If you're not willing to do that, then at least give me Pusssy Galore's phone number....
  13. Actually, if you were to go after the 1930's Saint-Gaudens, they are mostly in Mint State, high-grade condition. Not many AU's or below. Hence the high prices. Condition and census rarity.
  14. You wonder how many people "excited" about the coin are people who read that the ASE-S last year made buyers 10X their money and these people, without any coin knowledge, are posting on FB/Reddit that there are easy $$$ to be made ?
  15. Nice gesture, Ross....totally agree with your sentiments on Roger's book. Nothing like it at all, it's The Bible for Saint-Gaudens collectors or those with interest in the series. Also appreciate Roger's generosity in chiming in here over the months. This is one of the most valuable threads on Saints and any coin series for that matter on the internet.
  16. Can you cite specific instances where you've been attacked ? Stick to coins, contribute, ask good questions. It doesn't matter if you are 16 or 86, we'll applaud good back-and-forth.
  17. Did you have this speculation from the Mint and orders in the 1970's ? 1980's ? 1990' ? I wonder if this is an internet thing.
  18. Oh, I didn't know they could do that....they made a hardcover just like the soft one and the back cover, too ? I may look into that.
  19. They wrote me back, no plans on a PDF or online version as of yet. They could turn the final manuscript into a PDF if they wanted to. The SAINTS book is in hardcover ?
  20. Ross, I am putting together a PDF for the Heritage Auction texts (with David Akers commentaries) for many of the most famous, most-expensive Saint-Gaudens coins sold on their website. I think I have one for every year from 1907-32, and am finalizing the layout. Basically, I wanted something on my smarpthone and wanted the David Akers commentaries from the 2012 Duckor FUN catalog as well as some comments from 2008 and 1988...in PDF form. Some of the commentaries are short (1 or 2 paragraphs) and others like for the 1907 UHR or 1907 HR, or for rarities like the 1929-32 batch, are a few pages each. It's not Roger's book or even the Akers 1907-33 Gold Handbook or Bowers' Guide Book on Double Eagles...but it does have lots of Saint information (at least on the finest coins)....is in PDF format....and has lots of catalog commentaries (from Akers) which can be read on your smartphone. If interested, let me know.
