Welcome to the forum, if you plan to keep the coin as a family heirloom then there is no real need to spend the money to have it graded. However if you are thinking that someday you might sell the coin then having it authenticated and graded may make the process of selling easier. It is a slightly better date piece but in that condition the price it will sell for is going to be determined by the spot value of gold to some extent.

That cent has been doing its job for quite some time, overall it has held up very well nice find.

Welcome to the forums, to your concern about our desire to sell that should never be a concern to any collector. Collectors sell coins all the time, sometimes to fund other projects and sometimes to fund new coin purchases. From your photos the coin looks real, the color does look off but I'm guessing that the photo is washing out the color. It does look to some some evidence of the prior jewelry mount and that could preclude the coin from receiving a straight grade if submitted to NGC. I would second the recommendation to first weigh and measure the coin, if both of those are within the known specs for this coin then you can move forward with any plans to sell or auction it.

They are not unusual and there are many both graded and ungraded examples, I think I have two or three with varying amounts of roller marks. The mints have a fairly broad range of what is considered ok in terms of quality control, just consider all the 1955/1955 double die coins that got coins and released. Or the 1922 "plain" cents that were created due to the excessive die wear of the Denver die, and that is just two examples of one series where is QC had to be tighter those coins would not exist in the quantities they do. As far as grading its mint made so really it should not affect the technical grading, however it falls under the eye appeal side of the current market grading so its more of a case by case evaluation. The same is true for buying and selling, it clearly bothers the op enough to pass on buying, for myself it does not really bother me but I would not pay a PQ price for one with roller marks.

If it is those parallel lines you are asking about those are roller marks from when the silver was rolled into strips for the blanks to be cut from. Most of the time the coining process eliminates the marks on the planchets but not always.

Very bad idea to mess with copper, vinegar is a strong liquid and I would highly advise you not to do that. But if you must, try it out on a single coin so you can see the results. Depending on the age of the coins I expect that you will be left with pink coins that look stripped and very unnatural.

Just a guess but I think both the op and the fellow you quoted are looking at the middle 8 instead of the last 8.

Looks like a grease fill, the T is there just faint.

Because I know what marker to look for. All 55/55 coins were coined from one die pair, if you know what to look for its very easy to identify a good coin from a counterfeit. I do not see the correct marker in your photo of the reverse, however that photo is slightly out of focus so perhaps you can provide a new photo of the reverse just to be sure. It is a fake, counterfeit.

Your image is fine, there are a number of DDR's for 1964 halfs, this website Click Here is the best place for you to check and see if you can find a match. If you think you have found a match and want confirmation just post again with one you think it is from that website.

Bringing this back up for a reply from @DWLange, inquiring minds want to know. The photos that the OP shared are available to view in my post just above with what looks to be the match areas I circled in red.

It did not leave the mint looking like that, its had a hard short life.

Well either that local dealer is not very observant or you have a fake as from that photo I have some doubts on the shape of the two, fingers crossed that its the first and welcome back to the hobby.

Flattening the curve was just a fancy way of saying don't overwhelm the health system if at all possible. Look I'm not saying don't wear a mask, if it makes you feel better, more secure, certainly by all means wear one, I'm just tired of so many people that parrot what they hear without giving it any thought or inspection at all. If everyone was wearing an N95 mask sure there is a very real chance that it would indeed help to control the spread, but a cloth diaper has an almost zero chance. There is science behind the use of an N95 mask, those do work, but I have found only one study, a Danish study done last year with 6000 participants that showed an almost zero difference between the control group and the mask group, the rate of transmission was almost identical between the groups. Now I am not saying that this one study proves wearing one does not work but its a data point of reference and as I have yet to see even one study that shows a cloth mask provides any level of protection or limits the transmission rate; well I just not convinced there is any actual science as we have all been told to follow the science. Again wear one if you like and it makes you more comfortable, just get rid of the ridiculous mandates that are purely politically driven and have no underlying science behind them.
