  1. Not if the person passing the coin down was her father. Even a grown woman can still think that her father was infallible. And, if he was thought to be an expert collector, it will be hard to convince her that he could have been fooled by anyone or any coin.
  2. How could it be "extra" gold? All of the planchets were the same weight and size before striking - within tolerance, of course. It would just be gold that was in a different place than it should have been. If the "fin" is called a "wire" anything, it should be "wire rim." The edge is not affected, since it is inside the collar. But the term "wire rim" could imply a different method of manufacture, as opposed to a "normal rim," which was not the case. So, "fin" seems like the most perspicuous choice.
  3. I reported it and contacted the seller. The listing has been pulled, apparently. I can't find it anymore.
  4. It is possible that he did not die, but that this medal was to commemorate his retirement on September 16, 1943, after 25 years of service. Also, Kerkrade was the location of one of the mine shafts. From the linked article: In1797production stopped on the slopes of the Worm valley, and a new shaft was built on thePlateau of Kerkrade in Holz. (Sic)
  5. I would probably give it at least another month or two in the bath, but it definitely looks improved.
  6. First: This is a forum - a place for like-minded people to discuss items of interest. If someone chooses to just answer a question simply, without trying to instruct others, that is their prerogative. Not everyone is a teacher. Each person has the right to answer a question as simply or as elaborately as they choose, and it is not my place to try and tell them that their way is wrong or right. Second: On this forum WE DO NOT give reasons why we think a coin is fake, other than what is blatantly obvious. Many of us believe that counterfeiters and/or sellers of counterfeit coins lurk in the background, reading posts like this to learn how to improve the look and acceptance of their fakes. The LAST thing I want to do is help a counterfeiter make a better product that might fool someone. So, brusque or not, a simple answer is all they are likely to get from me.
  7. Seller is ehwilli_5. Before the listing gets pulled, here is a picture:
  8. It took me several months to figure out what Tom's avatar was. I was too embarrassed to ask.
  9. That's a very interesting looking edge. Welcome to the forum.
  10. Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you will fit in just fine. By the way - we like coin pictures. Feel free to post pics of the type coins, albums. or anything else you want.
  11. I always told my kids that boredom was caused by a lack of imagination. An active imagination will always find something to do.
  12. You got a copy of Pippi Longstocking?
  13. This is why I said it looked Roman to me at first glance. I was just looking at some of these last week, and the OP's coin seemed to ring a bell in my mind. But you and John know much more about ancients than I do. Looking forward to seeing what it actually turns out to be.
  14. At first glance, it looks like a Roman Denarius, but let's back up a bit. The best way for you to get an accurate ID is to repost your pictures - cropped and clear. Cropping will enlarge them a bit and remove all of the unnecessary background; improving the focus will help viewers to see the important details. Next, posting the weight in grams, and the diameter in millimeters, will go a long way toward helping to narrow down the hundreds of possible choices. There are a few very good ancient coin identifiers on this forum, (not me) and they will be happy to help you, if you will help them. Oh, and Welcome to the forum!
  15. I apologize to the OP for the off-topic post, but I am trying my best to figure out what these little pictures that James posted are. The first one looks like two teddy bears poking their heads out of an ice cream cone. The second is either a small block Chevy engine with large, round valve covers, or the head of a fly. The third looks like the bottle from "I Dream of Jeannie," or maybe a telescope. The fourth just showed up as a rectangle, and the fifth looks like an orange angel fish. Did I get close on any of them?
  16. I am glad you were able to have a good show, considering all of the late-date pullouts. Did the fact that some of the more prominent names/dealers were missing have much of an impact on the show, in your opinion? Were buyers finding good deals? Did the smaller dealers seem to have a better show than normal? (This is what I assumed would happen, so I am just trying to see if my theory was correct.)
  17. Nice addition. It's a good looking coin. Are you happy with your choice?
  18. And now, your name will officially be recorded for posterity as the discoverer of this variety. Pretty cool.
  19. Anyone in the market for junk silver should keep an eye on these. You may be able to pick up a few for less than melt. Just don't forget to factor in the $4 shipping cost.
