  1. May I suggest that those who thought this was hub doubling read this article by our hosts: https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/5688/Double-Dies-vs-Machine-Doubling
  2. This is my go-to source for old books: https://www.abebooks.com/
  3. Sad. And then you look at related items further down the page, and see "double-struck" coins that are obviously damaged, probably intentionally, and you just have to shake your head.
  4. That has to be one of the dumbest questions I've ever seen asked on this forum.
  5. I'm not goin to be the one to burst this bubble.
  6. How do you define "true unopened wheat penny roll?"
  7. AG Details And it is a Reeded Edge Capped Bust half. Check these pictures for comparison coins
  8. NGC recommends using 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 (63.5mm x 63.5mm) flips for submissions. Most collectors seem to prefer/use the 2 x 2 flips for storage. The larger flips make it easier for them to remove your coins without damage. Use non-PVC products for both, obviously. Here is a handy link: https://www.ngccoin.com/submit/how-to-package/
  9. Welcome to the forum, JM. Hope we can be of some help to you. How old are the kids?
  10. I wonder if any of the artifacts found at the Fort Orange site were returned to the Netherlands. I would think that their national museum would be interested in displaying pieces from the "New World."
  11. So you will know what I mean, here are some pictures I pulled from the web. Pictures of an encased Kennedy half, and a Barber in a bezel :
  12. Welcome to the forum. My guess is that the coin was removed from a bezel or encasement of some kind, and will not receive a grade, but I hope I am wrong. Good luck with your submission.
  13. And, just in case you haven't looked up the definition, a "cud" is the result of a die break at the rim of a coin. Or, partially digested food that is regurgitated from the first stomach of a cow for further chewing.
  14. No. I followed the links that Woods provided, found the Chinese and English versions of the inscription, checked with an online translation program to be sure I had it right, and copy/pasted.
  15. Good job, Woods. The inscription on the reverse, 中華人民共和國香港特別行政區, translates to: "Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic"
  16. A coin removed from an encasement - like a "Lucky Penny" holder - will often have an edge like that. Sometime just on one side; sometimes both.
  17. I looked at the Annual Mint Reports for 1976-1978, and could find no pictures or reference to a small Ike dollar. I did find pictures of the proposed-but-rejected Liberty Head small dollar, though. Too bad this design was replaced with the Susan B. Anthony portrait. It could have been a good-looking coin. Neither it nor the Eisenhower designs may have been any more popular than the adopted design, but either one would have looked much better, in my opinion.
  18. I don't read Chinese, but I believe it is a medal commemorating the annual July 1st (7/1) marches held in Hong Kong - possibly one particular event. There is a Wikipedia article here: Hong Kong 1 July marches - Wikipedia
  19. Judd ninth edition makes no mention of any "official" patterns being struck with this design. I assume the reverse die, or a similar one, was the one used on the Anthony dollar. Is there any evidence that the obverse die was actually produced?
  20. Check about 5:30 near the rim on your first picture. That little "R" means it's a reproduction.
  21. Modern coins are struck inside a movable collar, which aligns the coin with the dies, insures consistent shape and diameter, and in this case, imparts reeding to the edge of the coin. Had your coin been somehow struck without the collar in position, an error known as a broadstrike, it would likely be slightly larger than normal, possibly a bit off-center, and would not have any trace of reeding. Yours was struck normally, then had most of the reeding removed. It is damaged. As for worth, it is only worth 25 cents when used over the counter. It probably would be rejected by a vending machine. Looks pretty cool, though.
