MarkFeld has given very good advice. (No surprise there.)
If I may, I would like to add:
Double Eagles are big, heavy, and soft. As such, they are frequently found with detracting nicks and marks. This may make eye-appealing coins a bit more difficult to find, but I think it will be worth the wait and effort. When you look at your coins, you should enjoy them, not wish you had waited for a better one to come along.
I agree that a well-chosen MS64 is probably the best way to go. The price jump from MS64 to MS 65 is , as a rule, much greater than from 63 to 64. And anything below that grade is apt to be baggy and, as you mentioned earlier, it may be market graded. Patience is key.

Welcome to the forum, C370. The Redbook, which we all know gives high retail prices for the coins in it, lists a price of $125 for a 1982 small date copper alloy cent. If someone paid $3700 for one, there must have been something special about it, such as having a desirable error. I can't imagine any other reason to give that much for a common coin.

Add Zebo to my list of positive buying experiences. Thanks, Zach.

There was a limited amount of these sets handed out to Officials during the QEII visit to South Africa. Estimated around 30 sets only so that would make the three coins rare.
If you don't mind me asking: how did you manage to acquire yours?

Congratulations. Your persistence paid off. And hats off to our hosts, as well.

Hey, Mike. Your New Englandness is showing. You need to come down South, where we can teach you to say "y'all."
Welcome back to the forum.

the motivation for other companies is already there. Question is will another sticker mean the same as a CAC sticker.
I had that same thought, as I am sure others have. Is there room for another fourth party, and how would it go about achieving market acceptance?
On a side note,.it is refreshing to actually read a CAC thread that is not just detractors and supporters battling it out.

P.S. most of my collecting most recently is 18th century medals. More like how I used to enjoy the hobby. Beauty, rarity, no slabs, no CAC and in my series', low cost/risk.
Ditto here with Mississippi trade tokens . Except for an occasional purchase for my circulated type set, I have been buying only exonumia.

I was looking through some old pictures on Photobucket, and found this one. <This is NOT my set > It belonged to a member years ago that went by Boiler78. I never did learn who he was, but he was a heavy hitter who owned some of the most amazing coins and patterns in existence.I'm not sure if he is even still alive, or whether or not he still owns these. If I remember correctly, this set is aluminum.

When I saw these on my phone, I couldn't wait to get to my laptop to view them full screen. Amazing!

That IHC reminds me of the black light posters that I had hanging in my room as a kid.

Where did all of the pastel toned Morgans come from, Irvin? Were they from a single source? They are gorgeous!
