  1. If you are seeing that line move depending on lighting and movement of the holder, then stick to your guns and ask them if you send it in and it's not on the coin what happens. Don't let them intimidate you just because they are a big grading company. [But keep in mind what others have said which is it looks like the mark/toning is on the coin, and from looking now more closely at the last few close-up pics you posted that line appears to be incused and it looks like it stops then starts again (or there is a gap) at the bottom of the bell where there is a lip. So, that may be a scratch or gouge in the coin, and likely would not present like that if it was some kind of mark or scratch on the inside surface of the holder, but we do not have the coin in our hands.]
  2. That is so strange and counterintuitive to me. How in the world do you get a well-defined linear toning line on a coin like that? @Mr.Bill347In the other topic on this coin you posted the attached pic and indicated ... I am super confused now. Is the reply from PCGS making you second guess yourself?
  3. I also like trade dollars, (particularly ones with chop marks), so this might be the next addition to my "Potty Dollar" collection.
  4. Idk about pinning topics related to only one specific coin type, but I can see pinning general things like board rules, posting Coin pictures (as is done now), etc. For specific coin types there is the search bar. @dena Talking about the search bar, what about having an Advanced Search where you can narrow your search results based on other criteria like the person, dates, etc.? Also, I agree with allowing other file types as attachments to posts, particularly PDF as this is an extremely common file type on the web. Sometimes I find I need to convert PDF docs to pics in order to post info and it does sig increase the file size.
  5. I just realized how many more pages were added to this thread. I think the attached worn quarter would get a "Bad" award and the attached nickel would get an "Ugly" award if either were parking lot finds.
  6. Here is another one that looks like an AU - Details or maybe XF+ And why would somebody essentially destroy a nice coin like that with such a harsh cleaning?
  7. I ended up deciding on collecting more modern quarters, and went with the two latest Littleton quarters albums of the type @Mr.Bill347 recommended. The Littleton albums are really nice, well-made products and I am glad I went with them. They seem really durable and display both sides of the coins. Should last a long time. 😉 Okay, everybody empty your pockets on the table.
  8. Now that I think about it I believe my brother used to deep dive shipwrecks in Bermuda to look for coins like that. Never found anything super rare/expensive like those, or if he did you could barely make out it was a coin.
  9. Sounds like you are sure it's a mark/crack on the inside of the holder and not on the coin from having the holder in hand. If you send them the holder it sounds like they will just return that if it's an issue with the coin, which they prob can't tell for sure from just pics. But if it is a mark/crack on the inside of the holder and not a mark/crack on the coin as you suspect then what? You may want to ask to clarify that. 😉
  10. Bag mark and not die mark it is. It does look like a different coin, with a lot more detail and more of a shiny silver appearance than the orig pic. I agree, looks like she just got back from the salon. 😉
  11. You, a confirmed slabbed MS guy buy a really worn G coin. No way ... Next you are going to tell me it will be a raw coin, and then I will know you have lost it. [Also, I meant to ask before, is that def a scratch at 5 o'clock or maybe just a die mark or bag/scuff mark? Hard to judge depth from a pic.]
  12. Yea, I just saw the damaged date and looking a little closer the wear on the eagles left wing and other areas. VF agreed, and Details as suspected. Maybe the first one just needs a little "dip in the pool".
  13. Well, I guess I will not be starting a complete year/mint collection of those.
  14. Correct ... here you go Bill: United States Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson to Participate in the American Numismatic Association's (ANA) 2022 Chicago World's Fair of Money® | United States Mint (usmint.gov) [www.usmint.gov/news/press-releases/united-states-mint-director-ventris-c-gibson-to-participate-in-the-american-numismatic-associations-ana-2022-chicago-worlds-fair-of-money]
  15. Except for a few years (and the CC mint marks) may not be too bad since it's a one-a-year. But yea 1893 - 1895 could get pricy in MS. I will have to drop down from AU/BU to an XF for much of that. What's the plan 1893(P) and 1894-S, and then maybe save up for an 1895-S or drop to an AU for that one?
  16. Yea, I agree with JP that there are only certain VAMs that may increase the value. I would check prices, including recent sales/auctions to see if it may be worth it, and you would have to be sure they missed it on the orig submission.
  17. Okay, now to get back to the whole point of this thread which was grading/authentication of late date raw Morgans. Here are 2 more raw Morgans I recently saw just to kick around which are both 1902-S coins. (1) The first one appears to be XF (cotton leaves, hair, ear, feathers defined with slight wear esp. high points), maybe even AU (maybe not for ANA grading), but with a much darker appearance. Tarnish? I know these aren't the best pics, but I didn't want to waste everyone's time asking for better ones because I really don't like the way it looks anyway. (2) The second one looks like XF, but it may have been cleaned (darker areas around/within the letters and devices). But I'm not sure because it could just be some tarnish buildup and a lot of contact marks for a circulated XF coin as opposed to scratches/marks from cleaning. Thoughts?
  18. Strange, you have to wonder why they would have restricted areas/things, and when in the future they would permit access to certain areas/things. Maybe alternate storage for Area 51 that they need to "clean up"?
  19. Nice! I like what appears to be some light toning and the "soap bar" label. Gradflation resubmit? Also, you have posted a number of Morgans lately. How is the one-per-year set coming along?
  20. I just collect US and German coins, but WOW ... are they all that expensive?
  21. @RWB According to Bowers' "Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars" (updated/expanded 2021) he was physically at the US Mint in 2015 with some others to do research on Morgans when they discovered the obverse/reverse models, working hubs, and master dies for the mythical 1964 Morgan, and he includes pictures of these finds in his book. He also documents their subsequent inquires and research into the possible existence of working dies and trial strikes for a 1964-D Morgan, which they were unable to discover or find any evidence of. This was confirmed by Whitman publisher Dennis Tucker and Littleton Coin president David Sundman in articles they wrote, including pictures of the search and what they found. I would say those are some pretty good, confirmed facts, and I am not aware of any more recent facts which may contradict or supplement that information. Are you aware of any facts which may contradict or supplement that information as to the possible existence of working dies or trial strikes for a 1964 Morgan? I would be very interested in any additional info you have as this is a very intriguing subject for me.
  22. @J P Mashoke I guess that makes sense when you think it through, as there likely is some initial indications/traces of the metal movement, and then over time those indications/traces are worn down due to wear. Now that would be very cool to see! Have any pics?
  23. Bingo, you win the kewpie doll. There are no known "samples", whatever you mean by that, not in a library or anywhere else, and if destroyed it doesn't really matter, it doesn't exist just like the 1965 Peace Dollar which doesn't exist, for which I also have a Dan Carr fantasy coin due to the intrigue. There are rumors of "trial strikes" for the 1964-D Morgan by the US Mint according to Bowers, but sadly there is no proof any were struck or exist, and Bowers did not find any working dies when he was in the storage vault or anywhere else at the mint. He did ask about them and look because that would have been quite a find, but sadly no. If you don't know what a "trial strike" is that Bowers is talking about, and that I mentioned above, see the attached from the US Mint for "Trial Strikes for the Eisenhower Dollar" which apparently was the first time that was open to the public: Trial Strikes of Eisenhower Dollar (www.usmint.gov/learn/history/historical-documents/trial-strikes-eisenhower-dollar) If you still really think Dan Carr is "counterfeiting" these coins ponder this. A guy who runs a private mint is producing counterfeits of US coins, so the US Mint or Treasury Dept doesnt go after him, but instead asks that guy/mint to submit a design for one coin and then asks him to actually design two other coins (2001 N.Y. & R.I. State Quarters) for the US Mint, and ANACS will authenticate and slab these? Yea right, and I have a bridge to sell you.
