If these were my friends, I would advise the oldest in the grouping to occupy dead center and each of the other five to be arranged clockwise aligned vertically, next older first, and ending with the latest year of Issue in the 10 to 11 position. In NYC, this would be characterized, at the least, as disorderly conduct, at least, or conspiracy to commit a misdmeanor, which some may be a felony, at worst. I love Walkers and the fact Weinman's design was chosen over all others to represent American bullion dollars speaks volumes. Drinks on the house!   🐓  [Like]

If I can get the attention of theses rowdies,  and reorganize this one time independent event,  I will try to dive into their personal existence and see if there is a semblance of structure based on the art form they represent to avoid criminal action…Cheers! Salute! Skole!  (Volumes)

Sorry Rash. Sometimes I get lucky. I do a lot of window shopping. The trick for me is to not really needing it but if you see it for a song jump on it. I am trying to build more Jefferson sets but I am not in a rush.

Perfect, and so is the timing. I am still absorbing the watchful comments from all that directed me to not worry about comparing the 1964 Kennedy aacgs slab value (can of worms) I was involved in to just buying new slabs that someone else had paid the cost to slab for me.  Thanks my friend, and also to those that express the same sentiment.  Good Job! Thanks. Oh and I’m looking for new war nickels as we speak.

The nominal alloy for 1918 cents was 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc. During melting copper sometimes oxidized due to careless handling and this produced cupric oxide, also known as "fire scale." If a small amount of this remained near the surface of a planchet, the pressure of striking could cause the coin to split or delaminate. The result might be a thin leaf of copper with an irregular mass of black cupric oxide under, or next to it. Your photos are a little fuzzy, and color balance if off, but I suspect that is what happened to your coin.

There is limited collector demand since each is a unique example.

It is the thin leaves of copper surviving the decades that made me set it aside years ago when I found it in my wife’s Folgers can of change.  Thanks.

Well @J P Mashoke.... My friend, you have created a special place in my heart for War Nickels.  Congrats on completing your set!!:golfclap: I was just going through a random roll of Jeffersons right now and this one showed up.  Couldn't help but to throw a pic up here for ya.  Heck, I would have given you this one for your set if you needed it but I don't think it would quite meet the standards you have patiently sought and achieved, awesome.(thumbsu Shoot...I may just start a set of raw War Nickels myself..... I've found quite a few over the years CRH'ing.  Can't remember what all I have but you may have just compelled me to go back and look.  Congrats again!

I had to drag my sets out to look at yesterday thanks to JP. No clean one owners but close…

  5. Thank you to all of you for contributing. I feel that in reading all of your inputs, should someone read this thread, they will have a little better understanding of what is being marketed on the streets and thanks to all of you a better picture of the real value you all put into helping others, each in your own way.

There's absolutely no problem with paying for education, R-Rash.  I agree and my student loan balances would bear me out on this fact!! Best of luck on your submission.

Guess I’ll have too pass on the next Crown XR should I decide to waste my hard earned cash to satisfy my curiosity.
guess I shouldn’t assume that everyone knows XR is Canadian Whiskey…

What do you propose to "learn" from wasting money to have a common coin in common condition authenticated and graded? Will you learn self-deception? Will you learn wastefulness?

If there were something useful to share, yes it wold be; but, here there is no "documented fact" of any value at all -- to anyone, except possibly yourself. You would learn more by spending the same amount of money to buy a couple of 1964 Kennedys that have already been graded, and on which someone else had already wasted money.

Reality is a good teacher, but there is nothing to be gained by wasting your funds. You have a nice profit on the metal. Enjoy it.

It is not about the coin, or it’s intrinsic value, it’s about the marketing and system by many that use terms or fictitious grading (description) to enhance the value of their sale. Similar to how you feel about the “SP” designation. I am just not fearful to do my own DD with the added expertise of many here in this group of fine people so willing to share without belittling or insulting.

I have to agree R_Rash....that coin definitely doesn't warrant a trip to NGC.  It would cost more to slab it than the coin is worth.

I agree also, but sometimes the cost of learning at hand is a valuable tool in its own right. I am in an education process and appreciate all of your inputs, but still need to satisfy the visual comparison factor in my mind.  It will be traveling in very good company.  Again, this is why the topic is titled “Can of worms” . Thanks again, I always appreciate all comments 👍

Soooo...the OP wants to spend (waste) $35 to $50 to have common Kennedy halves put into TPG slabs....?

Sooooo….The value going forward to share documented fact with as many as possible is a plus not a minus, yes? It definitely isn’t being done do designate the coin as a “ specimen”.

On average a 64 is worth $25 and even a 40 is worth more than double that $5 at $13 so I think you WIN.^^

Did a little research project this morning. If I hadn’t taken the time to take pictures it would have been all of 5 minutes to dissect and place. A couple of dabs of model car glue sides and ends. I have a few coins I’ve been thinking about sending in, I figure I will send this one along from curiosity. Might come back at least a 40?

I received the last of the regular silver WWII Nickels today. I was wondering if it would come in today? When I first started this collection in April I was to try to complete a hand picked regular set by 2022 if I could. Well here it is 12/31/21 and they are all home. I was going to wait and hunt for the NGC requested 1943/2 until next year. But thanks to Lem. He posted a link for me to check out on that error coin. I ordered it on Tuesday and it will be here soon. So here is the new coin and the regular MS 64,65 + 66  WWII set. It is not in the top 100 of the NGC Registry but it is close to the top 200 :roflmao: I also want to say thanks to all who have been a part of my War Nickel Journey it has been a fun year here on the NGC forum. Happy New Year to All
