  1. @CoinbufI made away with a few cents. He wouldn’t budge on his hoard of rolls. Of course everything he had raw was nothing but Ms68 the best you will ever see anywhere. I bet I heard that a thousand time 😂
  2. Well I bit the bullet and brought them home. Here are a few of them and a smattering of various versions of holders through the years. I have a lot to organize but it’s a good problem to have. I had planned to heading to the ANA show this weekend, but no use now haha. I canceled that flight to come home and play with my new toys.
  3. These will not be getting reholdered. Not any time soon anyway. Part of the appeal to me was that they are untouched from days gone by.
  4. The 83 has VF20 wear, but I agree I think those dings are big enough to make it damaged. It’s cruddy but in no way is the wear G or VG. The dings kill you. The 12 I would say is a VG-10. These may be good candidates for a little acetone bath to get rid of some of the crud.
  5. It’s a sizable purchase, but to be fair it’s in jasper Alabama where the primary form of currency is meth 😂
  6. I certainly will. It’s going to kill me I’ll get them tomorrow then I have to jump on a plane for Salt Lake City for two days. Why does work have to get in the way of looking at my coins??
  7. Great info. Much appreciated. This is an old time collector that had a few safety deposit boxes full of graded coins. I went though the nicer ones pretty well, but due to sheer quantity I couldn’t with each. I think we agreed on price and I’m picking them up tomorrow. The local bank where he lived didn’t have enough cash on hand, and according to him he doesn’t trust anything other than green. I offered a cashiers check and he gave me a few expletives and a long lecture to not trust banks or checks. This will be my biggest single purchase by a long, long shot. I feel like I’ll be in them at a good price point if I ever decide to sell. I’ll be walking away with them between blue book and Greysheet so I really don’t thinks it’s much of a risk. I’ve verified all the certs. It’s just easy to start second guessing on a big purchase. Much appreciated.
  8. I have an opportunity to buy out a very, very nice collection consisting mainly of Morgans and Mercs in rattlers. I’ve got a price I think I can live with, but I’m curious on what you generally see as added value of the old holders. It would make me sleep a little better if I thought there was some meaningful difference and I am not all that versed in the holder side of the game. I know some people assume grading is lessened now and hope for an upgrade. Thoughts?
  9. I occasionally get on a kick roll hunting until I get tired of it. Then I’ll do it again. Generally I find about one impaired proof per box of quarters. Some I’ll find two, some none, but it seems like about one is average. I haven’t found any this old though. Seems to always be a state proof that is impaired. I’ve found one or two that would still be considered proof but I’m sure I was the first person to see them after they were rolled and taken to the bank. Generally they are a scratched mess. But it is surprising how many you will find.
  10. This one looks like split plating instead of a die crack. The copper layer is extremely thin and it doesn’t like being matched with a zinc core. They split, bubble, and every other kind of disagreement you can imagine between two metals. And if you can find a penny without black spots on it somewhere nowadays you are really doing something. The US needs to just quit trying to make something work and scrap cents. It’s not working well 😂
  11. In the silver market, which moves about the same speed as a glacier, that’s a big change for that time period. And what was so big was the investor demand that drove up premiums. Talking to a local dealer over the weekend he said he was paying $10 over spot for ASEs 4 or 5 weeks ago. That hype is probably being second guessed right about now.
  12. That’s exactly the thought I had. I wonder when they will find the official mint and understand they found the earliest dated counterfeit shop.
  13. I am ok with that but I want it to jump one more time and unload a bunch of it haha. I am kicking myself for not selling recently. I had every intention and kept putting it off. I missed my chance for sure. I’m tired of hanging on to a bunch and want to unload at the soonest chance at a profit. It takes up a lot of space in a safe to do nothing but go up and down marginally over time.
  14. Silver spot price is currently down $1.05 today, to $23.52/oz. A lot of people are kicking themselves currently for buying a month ago during the boom. Do you think with the delta variant causing issues we will see another spike driven by economic uncertainty and the desire for hard assets? Here is the 6 month silver chart. What a ride so far. Funny to see how far the spread was on Silver Eagles from spot price a month ago.
  15. I still don’t see a match. There seem to be noticeable differences. Die state and circ/uncirc may play a role with some of it. In your coin (top) the suspected underlying D is fairly straight relative to the mint mark. Wexler’s WRPM-003 (bottom) is much more tilted. Also your coin has some protrusions that the Wexler example doesn’t and vice versa. Yours also seems to have noticeable differences from the Variety Vista RPM-01. Your coin (Top) has much more of a shelf and separation than the RPM-01(bottom). The RPM-01 also has a horizontal extension of the underlying are that ends well past the hump in the D, while your coin only has a much smaller extension. Now I would agree that this looks like strike doubling from the shelf, but the areas on the right side of the MM wouldn’t be there I don’t believe if it was strike doubling (below). That’s why I went with DDD. Could very well be yours is an earlier die state and that accounts for the differences in the VV RPM-01.
  16. Could very well be. It’s close for sure. But it seems to be exaggerated versus the RPM on Variety Vista, albeit they seem to have circulated examples. I’m in the car (passenger not driving 😂) and can look at other references later. Someone may give you a definitive yes/no before then
  17. I am inclined to think this is die deterioration doubling. The RPM-01 would be the only possible match, but this has more of a spread on the vertical bar of the D than the RPM. if it is the RPM-01 the reason you are having trouble finding sold prices is I don’t think anything but the D over horizontal D (FS-501) is recognized by the big TPGs. It’s just to minor for them. ANACs attributes about anything someone will pay them for so they might. But I don’t think you’ll find a PCGS or NGC attributed RPM-01.
  18. This is caused by a slightly Misaligned Die (MAD). The die is slightly misaligned for the strike and it leads to “finning”. It’s not enough to bring a premium in my opinion, but I am far from an error authority. As far as wire rims in general there really isn’t such a thing. Not intentionally anyway. It’s finning caused by something during the strike. I’ll let @RWB get on his soapbox on this. I’ve seen him be passionate about it in a few things I’ve read.
  19. As I said earlier please post front and back of one coin at a time. Generally it is good practice to make a separate post for each coin of interest. Without seeing the back no one can tell you about a possible grade. on the 44 no major doubling is apparent, but there are several minor DDOs for that date. I’ll post the link to variety vista for comparison of the various ones. These would not be recognized by NGC I don’t believe but you would have to check variety plus page if you see one you think may be a match. http://varietyvista.com/01a LC Doubled Dies Vol 1/DDO 1944.htm As a new collector it’s common to believe you see a lot of doubled die coins. It’s probably the most common question in this newbie section. 99% of the time the answer is no. Many coins have doubling from die erosion or mechanical doubling and these are not errors and add no premium. My suggestion is before you even start to look for a doubled die, or other errors/varieties, learn the minting process. Also learn what the types of doubling are, what they look like, and what causes them. Error-ref.com has great info for reading as an example. If you don’t know what you are looking for it’s hard to find it.
  20. Correct. If I took a guess I’d say high heat was involved in some way but I don’t know for sure. Many times we never know what happened. We just ask ourselves could this have occurred during the minting process? Here the answer is no.
  21. I don’t know for sure if restoration will remove it. Personally I haven’t been able to get it gone when it gets that dark. It’s terminal for the most part. Aside from that sending it in for restoration and re-slabbing probably isn’t cost effective. You would be better off selling it and rebuying. Cull Morgans are going for pretty good money right now. And I’m sure with the spot it will still go above cull money. And you can find another problem free 64 for $100 give or take if you keep an eye out.
  22. No this is just Post Mint Damage (PMD). It’s only an error if it happened at the mint. Anything that happens after it leaves is damage. This couldn’t have happened during the minting process therefore it is damage.
