  1. @MalachiteMaid have you looked up Russian coins on MA-shops ? A bunch European coin dealers are on there they get stuff directly from European mints just as USA dealer gets stuff from the USA mints and sell to general public … however ! Some prices on MA-shop can be wacky from one dealer to next so you have to really do some serious research before purchasing a coin on MA-shops … I’ve ordered tons of German coins from MA-shop and older coin/catalog books for (reference purposes only)

    Hey Jason,

Thank you so much for your kind and informative reply. I am interested in collecting both bills and coins, but have started with coins. I will check out a copy of the Krause book, and hopefully a few Russian collectors will be around and I can meet them eventually.

I am not in the hobby to resell or anything like that. I wouldn’t be competing with any serious collector who might be protective of trade secrets or information. 😄 I just enjoy historical items from that country and would love to have some neat coins. I bet your German collection is very cool.

It’s great to meet helpful people that know their stuff. I really appreciate your comment, and now I can rest easy on my APMEX purchase. Thanks again! 👍

It’s nice to see other world coin collectors 👍 getting into the hobby , as for my German coin collection,  I have some of them posted in “post your most recent acquisition World” you can see them there … sometimes some other collectors do post some Russian coinage on there too on that post you’ll have flip through pages to find them …. Have fun collecting and good luck ! Look forward to see you post some of your coins you get …

Find what you like and collect it, do not let others try to take over your collection

Like how you said that strongly agree with that statement !

  3. @MalachiteMaid Russian coin collecting is a small crowd there are some here who may collect coins from Russia not many that I know on here exclusively collects just Russian coinage.. A good place to lookup information is Krause world coin book … maybe do online search for Russian coin catalog ? APMEX is large dealer they can be trusted , I’ve only bought few silver rounds from them in past , however some of their world coins and USA coins prices can be a little to high you can probably find them cheaper else where … I myself don’t collect Russian coinage , but I mostly focus on German coinage … I’m sure someone on here will chime in on some Russia coinage

As for Russian paper money ? If that’s what you’re referring to as “currency” there’s a separate chat forum for paper money from around the world I provided the link if you haven’t been over there yet

its not a great show for non-US but i usually find something

When I went I usually found something as well for my German collection or a medal …. I used to go to PAN show in the fall time , I’ve been to the one in spring time only two times over all years … I might pop in for the spring show it depends

I'm glad PAN show will continue at monroeville convention center , I’d rather go there than to go all way downtown to Pittsburgh convention center , fighting traffic bumper to bumper just to get back home with all detours and in Pittsburgh lately … some kind of roadwork going on just about every road I go down

Don’t be bored. Boredom is a prelude to death. Visit someplace neat. Monroeville, PA in mid-May

They were supposed move spring PAN show to Pittsburgh convention center … however Monroeville Convention center will still be open for May PAN show …. However the Double tree hotel next door might not be open if you’re making reservations …. They sold off convention center to make a Hobby lobby store , so hotel shut down already because of that … but for now May spring PAN show will continue as normal in monroeville

The 2004 nickels do typically come quite well struck. I have the rest of a roll from which I got an MS68 and two MS67. They still look great just sitting there in a tube.

That ain’t  any 2004 nickel ! Thats a Denver 2004 nickel . Best circulated coin strikes in any modern day mint branch in the good Ol’ USA

What is the year edition of the Krause pdf? I have two hard copy, five years apart.

I was about say the same ! There are few sellers on eBay or so they sell you PDF file of Krause book however they probably are violating a piracy act …. Now if it was a friend say I scanned a book and I gave to you in PDF file as a “gift friend to friend” I wasn’t profiting off it that probably somewhat okay and legal

  8. First off you can try local coin shop in your area , see what they have … looks like you are building a Raw collection of Lincoln cents a local dealer will probably have most of all raw Lincoln cents you are looking for (key dates may be tricky to find you might have try several dealers to find the key date coins)   …. Secondly you can maybe go to local coin show in your area you’ll need look up online see what coin shows are going in your area ….

as for finding reputable dealers for when you get more serious on collecting looking for higher graded stuff , it’s a big big sea out there many many coin dealers I myself avoid the “big name dealers” they have stuff marked up so high I don’t even know how they stay in business…. I mostly do business with smaller dealers who have websites with a healthy inventory and good pictures of coins and are willing to work on negotiating price with you (those are dealers I like to do business with) another is auction houses like heritage auctions , and great collections and Stacks bowsers (just name a few of popular auction houses)

No. Every coin they work on is a different process. Many chemicals can come into play. They know the proper way and the order the chemicals should be used to leave the surfaces of the coin stable. A simple dip or an acetone bath is not what many coins need. Some coins require a really long bath in a solution to slowly remove a problem without damaging the coin.

Ahhh the good ol’ MS70 coin brightener trick ? Just kidding around … I do agree and stand corrected there is much more depth to conservation services offered by TPG at PCGS and NGC and the solutions that they use…

  10. Conservation service all they do is dip in a solution to remove toning and hazing . Really no need pay for that service you can dip your own coins … if it had some gunk or some some stuff on it you can soak it in acetone … grading companies act like it’s a secret lab basically all same chemicals and stuff dealers and collectors been using for year to restore coins and remove ugly toning and by NOT cleaning them which is when a coin is full of hairlines and rubbing marks

there’s a very fine line between what’s acceptable such as dipping coins (is not considered “cleaned”) VS a coin that was rubbed with a rag or paper towel leaving hair marks all over it … not all of us agree on what is cleaning and Not cleaning on the forums here … I accept dipping for certain coins with ugly splotchy brownish toning or ugly album toning and artificial toning needs removed I don’t consider that cleaning

  11. @powermad5000 I’m sure coin shows are now the new hangout spots for criminals to steal coins off collectors or dealers when they leave show at the end of the event …. Everyone becoming more and more aware of this situation involving thieves and criminals …. My Grandfather used collect guns he went gun shows from time to time he knew dealers and they knew him well … one day a couple moved in next door to my grandfather he knew they were drug addicts (he believes they were the one that stole from him but there was no proof) …. He had go on vacation when he came home someone broke into his house stole a bunch of his guns not all of them but they mostly went after handguns however they moved 1 week after that incident … he never did find any of his guns back , he kept collecting bought a better gun safe (vault) as well back then gun safes weren’t popular in 70’s and 80’s most people kept their guns in wooden display cases with glass …

  12. Business doing business a favor is what I call it … The average Joe collectors like us sending in coins to have them graded by NGC/PCGS we are peanuts compared to bigger dealers who what really keep NGC/PCGS in business sending in bulk submissions

market grading was dirty scam that was created and driven by dealers to profit money , in theory I say TPG has went off the rails with market grading does it really do good ? In a dealer’s standpoint his main goal when sending coins in is to get highway grade he can possibly get for profit…  For us collectors ? We get a huge dent in our wallets trying to obtain these higher end coins , if we were to crack one out and send them in ourselves I guarantee you we will get grade point lower most of the time

  13. That’s actually a good question with some mixed answers … demands are what drive the price of coin up , is what really makes a coin become known as “rare” on buyers market, rare to you might mean it was hard for you obtain for your personal collection  …. A lot world coins have low low mintages compared to a lot US coinage why does US coins have such high prices ? They are driven by supply and demand most are not even rarities they were mass produce in the mints …

As in niches of the world coin collecting crowd there’s a lot coins that are below 200-500 mintage mark they just don’t have fanfare to make them rare by demands but rare for someone’s personal collection… your coin you showed it had mintage of 2,000+ it’s not really considered rare in my terms quiet common in fact

  14. As a long time collector myself … I wouldn’t send that coin in grading … it nice to you I would put in 2x2 Mylar and put in folder book or something … you can actually buy those anywhere 1957 wasn’t a special year either , it would cost you a lot money just to have it graded by NGC in the end it’s just not worth it money and value wise …. How ever you can buy one that was already graded that a coin dealer sent in for bulk submission grading at discounted prices on their end … for average collectors like myself and other on here ? The cost would be to high to send something like that in for grading

I was under the impression that NGC was the only one who graded coins other than US coins. I do not think finding paperwork would be an easy task.

PCGS grades world coins as well so does ANACS and ICG … I have more PCGS German coins and medals than I do NGC but NGC does have more of data base for wide wide range of world coins and ancients … PCGS won’t grade ancients that I know of due to true authenticity behind ancients
