I have looked again at the proof 1987 Viking Horseman which is pictured in this thread near the bottom of 4th page. It is enclosed in the original PM holder which is inside a velvet-lined box. When I pull the holder insert out and "feel" it for heft, the metal of coin feels quite dense - could it be gold? It is sealed in the holder. I need to find an XRF somewhere but the jewelry stores around here don't seem to have them or let me to use one. Any ideas on how I can test this coin without destroying the OGP?
I know it is a stupid sounding question, but trying to figure this out. I can not find any useful information on this coin, even to the extent of the silver proof and silver piedfort versions I have of this coin.
The coin has the proper die marks for the proof virenium, to me it just doesn't look right for gold but it's hard to tell from a pic. Pobjoy typically used a single letter die mark for precious metal collector coins or no die mark at all. But who knows what Pobjoy did, it would not surprise me at all if yours was gold. Hope it is, that would be a great discovery.
What type of holder is it in? If you can find a cheap IoM virenium £1 coin in the same holder you could compare the two, if yours is gold it should weigh more. IoM £1 coins from 1983 to 1995 would have the same virenium planchet (should weigh 9.5g). Can you post a pic of the entire holder.
I think virenium is 81% copper 10% zinc and 9% nickel, gold planchets were usually 22ct.

I have to crack all 10 coins now and send them back to NGC.

I'd think about leaving them in the PCGS slabs, a third round of grading is probably not going to net you much other than more expense. Especially if they were mishandled as you claim.
Do you have some before and after pics of one or two of the coins, I'd really like to see that 66+ that dropped 2+ points, that's surprising. Especially since PCGS seems to get called out for gradeflation more often than not, more so on the big ticket coins.

Looks like and probably is a milk spot/s, TPGs don't guarantee that they won't show up after encapsulation and they can't be removed without altering the surface of the coin. Milk spots can appear at anytime even years down the road. They will get worse (darker) and the coin is no longer a MS69.
Here's a link to our hosts opinion of them. https://www.ngccoin.com/submit/coins-we-grade/white-spots/

Packing paper or equivalent, newspaper, magazine pages, whatever. Never used bubble wrap but it would probably be just as effective. Rubber band everything together best I can, stuff them in the smallest box possible and off they go. So far so good
If I submit coins in original capsules the rattle of the coin in the capsule makes me a little nervous but then I think "pfft. It's only modern NCLT".

should I donate the coin to charity now?
LOL, it's all yours my friend. Well done.

Not a fancy number, at least not one that a TPG would recognize or one that would carry a premium.
A nice note in very good condition, worth $2. Post it across the isle at PMG, we like seeing notes over there.
Here's a link to some of the fancy numbers PMG will recognize. https://www.pmgnotes.com/news/article/5901/Fancy-Serial-Numbers-On-Currency/

You know what, that’s a great idea. I’m going to do just that. I’m bringing it back!! But in a 2x2. So he at least knows it should be protected. Thanks.
Awesome! We can all make some rash decisions in the moment, I know I have.
Let us know how it goes.

Why lie, chances are that the clerk would have happily traded you, if you were honest with them. Most people are more than happy to exchange if you tell them the truth and they see your excitement/passion for collecting. To bad...
Good news is that you can still make it right. Up to you and you'll probably get to keep the coin anyway.

Glad you are enjoying your coins, that's what it's all about.
Chances are, those coins will never be worth more than they are right now. If you're looking to turn a profit, now is the time, then pick one of these up (no spots) 5-10 years down the road at a reduced price. Probably.

I don’t EVER have any ASE’s graded any more, EVER.
A realization that I was late to the party on.

I'm gonna take a risk and say 30%
Congrats on the coin/grade. If the PF 2020 W ASE's (with out privy) are any indication you should expect around 86% of the WWII ASE's to grade at 70 (from NGC). The 2020 -S proofs were grading at the same clip.

It was the first time I paid for the pictures and I thought they would at least make sure the holder was wiped down and looking good for the pics....thats why I'm afraid its the coin. But they did do is super fast so maybe they just rushed it!
If you paid for NGC Photo Vision, those aren't the pictures from that service. Those are just the standard images they take of almost every coin. The Photo Vision images will be of the coin out of the holder, they will email them directly to you. It may take a day or two to receive them.

That was a fast turnaround, WOW.
Hopefully those are just marks/debris on the holder, some of it absolutely is. Or reflections in the proof fields. There a some areas I don't like the look of but it's tough to say without seeing the coin in hand.

Very cool! I live I. Gand Rapids MI and have never came across one yet. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome to the forum,
The 51 I see quite often the 50 not as much. Tokens are tons of fun to collect, the only problem is that there ARE tons of them. I had to limit myself to a region (i.e. Allegan county MI) otherwise I'd have buckets of these laying around.

When you add a coin to a custom set you can select "Want" instead of "Own" and fill that new slot with images and notes for your raw coin. I plan to do that for several new crowns that I've picked up but haven't yet sent in for certification.
That's brilliant, I've been trying to figure out a way to get the images of my raw tokens to be visible in a custom set.
Now I can pick back up on my custom sets.

Isn't the modern tier topped at $2,000 value? The gold eagle is selling for over $10,000 raw on ebay right now. I'm assuming he has a gold eagle since he said he got "all" of the V75 eagles.
True, I was thinking of the 1/2oz that sold out yesterday for some reason. Probably because I'm wishing I had tried to get it.
So the Early Bird/Standard submission would be the cheapest or to cover the resale value completely the Express tier.
Just now, Mc10139 said:but you can't submit mixed on the same invoice as far as I know.
You can, at least I have in the past (on the Modern tier).
-
I'm pretty sure your coins can be submitted on the same form (Modern Tier).
51 minutes ago, Mc10139 said:so ill submit on 2 separate orders and try to make the invoice #s match!
Nope, the submission #'s are unique. Best you can do is submit on same form and have sequential cert #'s, -001 & -002. Only other thing I can think of is if they have a dual holder for the coins, two coins in one holder. I'm pretty sure they don't but if you were going to ask a question to NGC that would be it.
The cert #'s are supposed to be unique.

It's slow here today so I thought I'd chime in, I think you're in the ballpark.
I agree MS but lower 64, 63 maybe, just too many marks for me on the obv. Nice find!
Let's see what everyone else says, as I'm no expert.

If you go to your email settings in your NGC account you can have them email you their Weekly Market Report.
Here's the Saint's info for what it's worth
You can also use the NGC Price Guides they keep them pretty up to date for U.S. coins, but can be on the high side. People tend to knock 10 - 20% off those prices and use that number as a gage.
Here's a link to the price guide for the Saint's https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/united-states/gold-double-eagles/70/

About the same as you, my boats were all pontoons. Order went through about quarter after and received conformation right away.
MS vs. SP

Been calling the burnished ASE's SP for at least a few years. Although I think PCGS as gone back and forth between MS and SP on these a few times.
Not my coin.
